ADDIE MAE SULLIVAN
Addie Mae Sullivan, 95, departed this life on Monday, October 3, 2011, at Trinity Mission Rehab of Charlottesville. Mae was born on October 14, 1915, in Greene County, the daughter of the late James William and Fannie S. Sullivan. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elwood, infant daughter, Alvis Christine; brothers, Gilbert, James, and Homer Sullivan; and son-in-law, Charlie Wood. Mae was a homemaker and took loving care of her family. She loved working in her vegetable garden and took great pride in her flower gardens. In her later years, she enjoyed her friends at Trinity, the activities program, especially bingo, church services and musical programs. She is survived by two daughters Norma S. Wood; Lois M. Williams and her husband, Randy; one son, William E. Sullivan and his wife, Virginia; grandchildren, Chuck Wood, Christina and Scott Williams, Rhonda Jones, Ann Green and Matthew Sullivan; great- grandchildren, Jensen and Ashton Wood, Kendall, Jacob and Ryan Farley, Katelyn Williams, Christian Morris, and Daniel and Adam Jones. The family would like to thank Dr. Jonathan Evans, the first floor staff at Trinity, and Legacy Hospice for their care of Mom during the past few years, especially the last few months. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, October 6, 2011, at Holly Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Greg Anderson officating. ELKTON. — Arthur Cleveland Sullivan, 84, of Mission Home, died Thursday at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Sullivan was born in Greene County June 16, 1883. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ida Bell Shifflett Sullivan; six daughters, Mrs. H. Virginia Wise of Mt. Crawford, Mrs. Ethe1 M. Shifflett of Crozet, Mrs. Josephine E. Ritchie of Harrisonburg, Mrs. Ruth L. Sullivan of Warrenton, Mrs. Eva M. Sullivan of Waynesboro and Mrs. Evelyn M. Webster of Fishersville; five sons, Roy C. and Meredith A. Sullivan, both of Waynesboro, Edgar M. and Ellis W. Sullivan, both of Charlottesville, and Joseph I. Sullivan of Baltimore; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, and a brother, John Sullivan of Dyke. The body is at Brill Funeral Home pending the completion of funeral arrangements. ELKTON — The funeral for Arthur C. Sullivan, 84, of Mission Home will be conducted 2 p. m. today at Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church at Boonesville by the Rev. Dennis Whittle and the Rev. Sanford Yoder. Burial will be in the Prize Hill Cemetery at Boonesville. Pallbearers will be Ernest Bruce, David, Luther, James, Arthur, Wayne, Gary and Leon Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan died Thursday afternoon at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Carolyn Sullivan Strickler, 57, of Crozet, departed this life on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born Dec. 6, 1945, in Baltimore, Md., the daughter of the late Vernon C. Sullivan and Lucille J. Sullivan. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Frances A. Sullivan and Beverly A. Sullivan. She is survived by one daughter, Kim Baber and her husband, Jack of Batesville; two sons, Joseph Strickler and Randy Herring of Crozet; one sister, Joanne S. Anderson and her husband, Tommy of Chesterfield; one beloved granddaughter, Sydney Fewell; and two step-grandchildren, John and Lauren Baber of Batesville; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Carolyn was a successful real estate agent with Kirtley-Watterson Realtors until her illness, then became a full time grandmother. She will always be remembered for her courage and strength during her long battle with cancer. She always had a smile and kept a positive outlook on life. We would like to thank Dallas Allen and our Crozet Baptist Church family for all they have done for the family. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Crozet Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Prize Hill Cemetery in Boonesville. The Rev. David Collyer will officiate. Following the services there will be a celebration of Carolyn's life in the fellowship hall at the Crozet Baptist Church. Carolyn Faye Sullivan, 74, formerly of Grottoes, and a resident of Willow Estates Retirement in Penn Laird, peacefully passed away March 23, 2019. Faye was born Aug. 26, 1944, in Harrisonburg, the daughter of the late Clarence A. and Lottie M. Sullivan. She worked as a hairdresser for more than 40 years. She is survived by a special aunt, Catherine M. Wilkerson of Grottoes, Ruth Boyd of Ohio, and numerous cousins. Per Faye's wishes, there will be no formal services and burial will be private. Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes is entrusted with arrangements.

SHENANDOAH - The funeral for Carrie Elizabeth Billingsley, 95, of Temple Hills, Md., and formerly of Shenandoah, will be held 11 a.m. today at the W. G. Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah. The service will be conducted by the Revs. Virgil Shrader and Truman Tremble, and burial will be in the EUB Cemetery at Shenandoah. Mrs. Billingsley died Friday evening at her home. She was born Feb. 19, 1889, in Page County and was a daughter of the late James and Cornelia Morris Sullivan. Mrs. Billingsley was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. On Jan. 1, 1914, she married James M. Billingsley, who died Feb. 6, 1953. Surviving are a grandchild and a great-grandchild. NOTE: Carrie is the great-granddaughter of David Morris and Nancy M. Cathy V. Sullivan, 62, of Earlysville, Va., passed away at home late Tuesday, October 15, 2019. Cathy was born on January 27, 1957, in Charlottesville, Va., to the late Veluvian A. Via and Reba H. Via. Always family-oriented, Cathy stayed close to her birthplace and raised her family in Earlysville, Va. She was a dedicated member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Earlysville and worked for Albemarle County in food services before retiring to help take care of her grandchildren. A loving sister, mother, and grandmother, Cathy devoted her life to caring for her family. Those closest to her were her greatest joy and pleasure, whether she was talking to her sisters, spending time with her children or taking care of her grandchildren. She loved the Lord and served as Deacon at her church among many other roles. Cathy will be fondly remembered for her sense of humor, resilience, and generosity. Cathy never failed to enjoy simple pleasures such as the warm sun, flowers on her deck, delicious food and time with her family. Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Veluvian Via of Free Union; her brother, Dale Via and his wife, Judy; and her sister, Velma Brinkley. She is survived by the father of her children, Joel Sullivan Jr. of Elkton; her two children and their spouses, Cody Sullivan and his wife, Sarah, and Lauren Conti and her husband, Tim; her sister, Newassa Gentry and her husband, Scott; her brother-in-law, Danny Brinkley; her in-laws, Wayne and Thelma Sullivan of Earlysville; her aunts, Gladys Hayes and Mabel Via; two granddaughters, Vivian and Paige Conti, as well as an extended family including cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Earlysville, from 6:30 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2019. A celebration of life will be held at Chestnut Grove on Friday morning, October 25, 2019, at 11 a.m. with a lunch reception following. Chester Alan Sullivan, 69, of Grottoes, passed away Friday, July 13, 2012, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. He was born in Augusta County on Sept. 23, 1942, and was a son of the late Luther Franklin and Daisy (Blackwell) Sullivan. Chester was a retired machinist at Reynolds Metals in Grottoes after 35 years of service. He graduated from New Hope Grade School and Wilson Memorial High School. He was united in marriage on Oct. 1, 1960, to Rowena Virginia (Clark) Sullivan of Grottoes, who survives. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Alan Sullivan and wife, Tammy, of Culpeper, and Glenn Sullivan and wife, Christina, of Grottoes. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Amber Perryman and husband, Jordan, and Nicolas Sullivan. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, David Arie Sullivan. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 16, 2012, at Edgewood Cemetery with Steve Saufley officiating. Earl Monroe Sullivan, Sr., 80, of Fishersville passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017, at his home. Born on March 3, 1937, in Virginia, he was the son of the late Edgar and Minnie (Coleman) Sullivan. Earl's life was dedicated to his family and his church. He was an employee of Process Engineering & Fabrication in Afton for many years. He was a member of the Crozet Sportsman Club. Earl had a love for cookbooks, collecting cast iron cookware and enjoyed fishing. Those who knew him will remember him as a collector of everything and a devoted friend to many. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Ian Sullivan; as well as two brothers, Edgar and Ulysse Sullivan. Survivors include his loving wife of 37 years, Betsy (Braxton) Sullivan; children, Earl Monroe Sullivan, Jr. and wife, Diane of Crozet, Va, Michael R. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Greenwood. Surviving are his wife, Minnie Coleman Sullivan; four sons, Edgar R. Sullivan of Afton, Earl and William Sullivan, both of Charlottesville, and Ulysses H. Sullivan of Linville; three sisters, Ethel Shifflet of Crozet, Evelyn Webster of Fishersville and Ruth Sullivan of Warrenton; three brothers, Joe Sullivan of Baltimore, Meredith Sullivan of Waynesboro and Ellis Sullivan of Mission Home; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Edgar Richard Sullivan, 61, died Oct. 11, 1997, near his home. He was born Oct. 23, 1935, in Albemarle County, the son of Minnie Coleman Sullivan of Crozet, and the late Edgar Monroe Sullivan. In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife, Dorothy R. Sullivan of Afton; two daughters, Terri McDaniel of Charlottesville and Sherri Hurt of Monroe; five stepchildren, Boyd Daniel Bright of Washington, D. C., Allen Bright of Buena Vista, Raymond Bright of Afton, Mark Bright and Donna Moore, both of Grottoes; three brothers, Earl Monroe Sullivan of Charlottesville, Ulysses H. Sullivan of Afton and William A. Sullivan of Charlottesville; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was vice president of the Process Engineer Co., Afton. Mrs. Ella Florence Sullivan, 69, wife of Wesley B. Sullivan of Mission Home, died yesterday afternoon at a local hospital. A native of Greene County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Morris. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Herbert Sullivan of Mission Home; four sons by a previous marriage to the late Henry Shifflett: Billie S. Shifflett of Earlysville, and Ellis D., Ernest M. and Roy Shifflett of Charlottesville; three sisters, Mrs. Henry Morris of Free Union, Mrs. Gilbert Shifflett of St. George, and Mrs. Mandy Goodman of Heards; two brothers, Lannie Morris of Free Union and Robert Morris of St. George; 22 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Gentry's Methodist Church near Boonesville, with burial in the church cemetery.

ELLIS WILLIAM SULLIVAN
Ellis William Sullivan, 94, of Mission Home, passed away on Thursday, May 6, 2010, at Avante Nursing Home. Mr. Sullivan was born on March 31, 1916, in Greene County and was one of 11 children born to the late Arthur Cleveland and Ida Bell Shifflett Sullivan. He is survived by one sister, Ruth Sullivan of the Charlottesville area; and a brother, Meredith Sullivan of Waynesboro. Ellis was married to the late Virginia Sullivan McCown and also to Ann Shifflett Sullivan. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in Guadalcanal in 1944 and held a lifelong passion for playing the banjo. Mr. Sullivan leaves behind two sons and four daughters. Per Mr. Sullivan's wishes, his body was cremated and services will be private for the family.

Ethel M. Sullivan, 78, one of God's special children went home to join her loved one's on this day, Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005. Ethel was born August 17, 1927, the daughter of the late Newman and Mary Herring Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her brother, Oscar Sullivan; and a sister, Hattie Davis and her husband, Randolph. She is survived by her son, Jimmy Sullivan and his wife, Becky; a daughter, Florence Via and her husband, Alan. Also surviving are four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and her sisters, Lucille Morris and Kathleen Vernon; an aunt, Alice Campbell; an uncle, Jack Herring and his wife, Beatrice; numerous nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Ethel loved everyone she met. She reached out to kiss your hand no matter who you were. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at the Ryan Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Sandy Kelso officiating. Interment will follow at Chestnut Grove Church Cemetery. Ethyl Sullivan, 80, of Barboursville, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Culpeper Medical Center. She was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Albemarle County, a daughter of the late John L. Sullivan, Sr. and Fleta Jollett Sullivan. She is survived by two cousins, Elwood Hall and Lorena Garver, two nephews, Charles E. Turner and James L. Turner, and three nieces, Gladys M. Haney, Margie T. Sacra and Lucille Milici. A number of great-nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by a brother, John Lloyd Sullivan, Jr. and a sister Bessie S. Turner. A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with Pastor Wendell Lamb officiating. Interment will be at the later date at the Mission Home Cemetery.

Evelina Mae Shiflett, 85, of Sevierville, Tenn. formerly of Mission Home, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1987 in Sevierville, Tenn. She was the daughter of the late James Charles and Mary Ann Morris Sullivan. Her husband was the late Henry H. Shiflett. She is survived by three sons, Haven Isaac Shiflett of Alexandria, David Harrison Shiflett of Great Falls; one daughter, Virginia Louise McCown of Sevierville, Tenn.; two brothers, Thomas Sullivan of Hershey, Penn., Clark Sullivan of Waynesboro; two half brothers, Willie Sullivan and Ralph Sullivan both of Great Falls, one half-sister Vivian Kenshloe of Mission Home and 10 grandchildren. She was a member of Our Brethren Church. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 P.M. Thursday at the Ryan Funeral Home in Quinque with interment in the Evergreen Cemetery. The Rev. C.C. Evelyn Virginia (Sullivan) Webster, 83, formerly of Waynesboro and Fishersville, died, Friday, July 3, 2009, at Birch Gardens, Staunton. Born March 25, 1925, in Greene County, VA, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Cleveland Sullivan and Ida Bell (Shifflett) Sullivan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters: Hattie Virginia (Sullivan) Wise, Ethel Mae (Sullivan) Shifflett, Josephine Etta (Sullivan) Ritchie and Eva Marie Sullivan, as well as three brothers: Joseph Ira Sullivan, Roy Cleveland Sullivan and Edgar Monroe Sullivan. She was a member of Wayne Hills United Methodist Church, Waynesboro. Family members include her two brothers: Meredith Arthur Sullivan of Fishersville and Ellis William Sullivan of Waynesboro and a sister: Ruth Lydia Sullivan of Warrenton, VA. Fannie Mae Sullivan passed away Sept. 21, 1989 at Eldercare Gardens at the age of 93. She was born on March 9, 1896, in Greene County, but until recently was a resident of Vienna. Her parents were the late Lemuel and Mary Morris Shifflett. She was preceded in death by her husband James William Sullivan and two sons, James E. Sullivan and Homer Sullivan. Surviving are a daughter, Mae Sullivan and a son Gilbert Sullivan of Earlysville. She is also survived by the following grandchildren: Norma Wood, Lois Williams, Shirley Davis, Donna Hoy, William Elwood, Gilbert Jr., George, Carroll, William, Edward, Wesley, Kathryn, Debra and Sandra Sullivan all of Charlottesville, Michael, Pamela and James E. Sullivan of Vienna, and great and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 23 at Hill and Wood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. C.C. Kurtz officiating. Florine Lucille Lankford Sullivan, 92, a resident of Shenandoah and Evergreen Meadows in Stanardsville, went home to be with the Lord on March 22, 2006. She was born on Feb. 13, 1914, in Shenandoah, and was the daughter of the late John K. and Maggie L. Berry Tappy. Mrs. Sullivan was a member of Redeeming Love Fellowship Church and was a past member of the Shenandoah Rescue Squad Ladies’ Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by Charles C. Lankford on July 30, 1954, and Lowell O. "Red" Sullivan on Sept. 6, 1983. She was also preceded in death by a son, Charles "Butch" Lankford, four brothers and five sisters. She is survived by a daughter, Carol Ann Dean and husband, Gary; a daughter-in-law, Dianna Lankford, all of Shenandoah; two grandsons, Charles "Chuck" Allen and wife, Tammie, of Timberville, Thomas Allen and wife, Tiffany, of Rocky Mount; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Hansel "Hank" and Grover Tappy, both of Shenandoah; two sisters, Joyce Smith of Shenandoah and Anna Belle Powers of Elkton. A Celebration of Life service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2006, at the Redeeming Love Fellowship Church in Shenandoah with the Rev. Leroy Hulvey officiating. Floyd "Elwood" Sullivan, 90, departed this life, Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at a local hospital. He was born March 28, 1912, in Greene County, the son of the late Jeremiah M. Sullivan and Lucy Roberts Sullivan. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Alvis Christine; two brothers, Joseph E. and Harold M. Sullivan; and three sisters, Lily Bruce, Bertha Mock, and Alvis Christine Sullivan. Elwood was a devoted husband and father and he was a dairy farmer for Watts W. Morris for many years. He was employed by Craig Builders for more than 40 years and a member of The Mission Home Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Addie Mae Sullivan; one son, William Elwood Sullivan and his wife, Virginia; two daughters, Norma Jean Wood and her husband, Charles F. Sr., and Lois Marie Williams and her husband, Randy, all of Charlottesville; one sister, Martha Sullivan of Elkton; six grandchildren, Charles F. Wood II, Rhonda Jones, Ann Green, Christine Williams, Matthew Sullivan, and Scott Williams; and seven great-grandchildren, Jensen and Ashton Wood, Daniel and Adams Jones, Kendall and Jacob Farley, and Katelyn Williams. She was born Sept. 26, 1906, in Elkton and was a daughter of the late Arthur Cleveland and Ida Shifflett Sullivan. Mrs. was formerly of Mt. Crawford and had been living in Bridgewater for the past five years. She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Mt. Crawford, and also belonged to the church's Adult Sunday School Class No 9 and Ladies Guild. On Sept. 2, 1933, she married Frank B. Wise, who survives. Also surviving are five sisters, Mrs. Otis Shiflett of Crozet, Mrs. Josephine Ritchie of Harrisonburg, Mrs. J. C. Sullivan of Waynesboro, Mrs. Harold Sullivan of Warrenton and Mrs. W. W. Webster of Fishersville, and five brothers, Roy C. and Meredith Sullivan, both of Waynesboro, Edgar Sullivan of Charlottesville, Ellis Sullivan of Stanardsville and Joseph Sullivan of Baltimore, Md. Helen Sullivan Clayter, 90, a resident of Ivan Calderwood Homestead in Vinalhaven, Maine, and formerly of Shenandoah, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005. Mrs. Clayter was born Jan. 29, 1915, in Shenandoah, and was the daughter of the late Alkennie and Mary Marshall Sullivan. She graduated from Shenandoah High School and retired from Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company. She lived in Arlington until 1974, when she moved to the island of Vinalhaven, Maine. She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Aubrey Clayter. Survivors include a son, James F. Clayter of Vinalhaven; two grandsons and two great-granddaughters. Mrs. Clayter was a lifelong member of Christ’s United Methodist Church in Shenandoah, where a memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Herbert Lee Sullivan, 72, of Charlottesville, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at a local nursing home. He also worked as a night maintenance supervisor with the City of Charlottesville, and following his retirement from there, worked at Martha Jefferson Hospital. Irving Homer Sullivan died at his home in Simmons Gap near Sullivan Sunday, July 22, 1923. Death was due to tuberculosis from which he had been suffering for a number of years, probably since childhood. He took treatment for about two years in the Blue Ridge Sanatorium near Charlottesville, and for a while he seemed to improve, but finally his condition was changed for the worse, and he himself realizing that his condition was serious wished to be brought home, so hew was brought there in the spring. He was made as comfortable as possible by his relatives and friends, who tried as far as possible to provide everything he wished to eat. Irving was a bright and intelligent young man of fine character, and was a favorite among all of his associates. He was a member of the Episcopal church to which he remained true to the end. Irving was 22 years, 3 months and 23 days old and was a son of the late Bluford G. Sullivan. Besides his mother who is Mrs. Sis Shiflett, he is survived by one brother, William, at home, and one sister, Mrs. Addie Heights, of Alexandria. He was laid to rest Monday July 23, in the family burying ground by the side of his father. A large crowd of relatives and friends were present. Funeral services were conducted by Revs. Messrs. Cline and Stanley, of Mission Home. The family has the sympathy of the whole community in their bereavement.

Jo Anna is survived by a son, Michael (Diane) Sullivan of Grottoes and daughters, Mary Ruth (the late Roland) Fields of Salem, Ore., Sally (Jeff) Smith of Dayton and Jackie (Greg) Stenson, with whom she lived in "the house of love" on Dogwood Avenue. She loved her grandchildren deeply: Kenneth Sullivan, James Sullivan, Adam (Krystal) Fields, JoAnna Fields, Lydia Smith, Codi Jo (Hunter) Wheelbarger, Kiera (Michael) Heatwole, Kevin (Amanda) Stenson, Kurt Stenson and Kaylin Stenson and three great-grandchildren, Everest and Eden Stenson and Andi Jean Wheelbarger. The funeral for Josephine Sullivan Ritchie, 73, of 211 Sunrise Ave., Harrisonburg will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home. The service will be conducted by the Revs. Thomas Coffman and John Dennis. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Ritchie died Wednesday at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. She had been ill a year. She was born April 4, 1910, in Greene County and was a daughter of the late Arthur and Ida Belle Shifflett Sullivan. She later moved to McGaheysville and graduated from high school there. In 1934, Mrs. Ritchie graduated from Rockingham Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a nurse until retiring in 1980. She had lived in Harrisonburg more than 50 years. Mrs. Ritchie was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, the Mizpah Sunday school class of the church and Shenandoah Valley Chapter 76 of the Eastern Star. On Oct. 17, 1934, she married Charles S. Ritchie, who died in 1957. Surviving are a son, C. Sheldon Ritchie of Lompoc, Calif.; three sisters, Ethel Shifflett of Crozet, Ruth Sullivan of Warrenton and Evelyn Webster of Fishersville; five brothers, Roy and Meredith Sullivan, both of Waynesboro, Edgar Sullivan of Charlottesville, Ellis Sullivan of Greene County and Joseph Sullivan of Baltimore; and three grandchildren. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday. Josie Sullivan Shifflett, 75, of Woodland Circle, Waynesboro, left us to earn her heavenly wings Wednesday, March 19, 2008, from Augusta Medical Center. She was born June 15, 1932, in Augusta County, a daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes (Wade) Sullivan. She was a very active member of Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren, and sang in the choir there. An eligibility worker for the Dept. of Social Services, she retired early due to health issues. Josie was an Earthly Angel among us who enjoyed helping people, and spending time with her beloved grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Micky Shifflett Jr. on November 2, 2007; a son, Albert G. Shifflett; and a sister, Louise Collier. Left to cherish her memories are her son, Patrick M. Shifflett and his wife, Terri, of Fishersville and their children MacKenzie L. Shifflett and Jon M. Shifflett; her nephew, Jeffrey D. Farmer, whom she raised as a son; her daughters, Deborah L. Carter of Waynesboro and children Matthew R. Carter and Allyson N. Parrish; Denise M. Martha Elizabeth Sullivan, 90, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Sullivan was born September 19, 1922 in Greene County to the late Jerry and Lucy Roberts Sullivan. She was also preceded in death by siblings, Christina Sullivan, Lillie Bruce, Joseph Sullivan, Bertha Mack, Harold Sullivan and Elwood Sullivan. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of Mission Homes in Greene County and moved to the Elkton area in 1992, where she enjoyed being a homemaker and her grandchildren. On November 6, 1945 she married, Golden Lester Sullivan who preceded her in death on July 28, 1990. Survivors include her daughter, Gloria Faye Hansbrough and husband, Ray of Elkton; step-son, Golden Lester Sullivan, Jr. and wife, Dixie of Maryland; two granddaughters, Theresa Lynn and Shelia Rae Hansbrough. Meredith A. "Sully" Sullivan, 88, of Fishersville, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, November 26, 2015, at Birch Garden Assisted Living. He was born November 1, 1927, in Greene County, son of the late Arthur C. Sullivan and Ida Bell Shifflett Sullivan. Sully worked at Crompton, Dawborn Brothers and Brown & Root and retired from ALCOA. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir. He was a Life Member of Waynesboro First Aid Crew and was Crewman of the Year in 1970. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Sully was a great outdoorsman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers. He was the last living member of his immediate family. He is survived by his "second family", Warren and Sandy Cash, Stephen Cash and D.W. Cash, and close friends, Carl Staton and the late Jeane Coletti. On June 18, 1947 the Mission Home neighborhood was greatly shocked at the sudden death of Mrs. Mary Ann Sullivan. A host of relatives and friends gathered at the beautiful Episcopal Church at Mission Home on June 21 to pay tribute and mourn her passing. The tears of many and saddened faces gave the evidence that a dear friend and a dear Mother would be missed. The Minister in charge compared her life with the saying of St. Paul, "I have fought a good fight, I have kept the faith, I have finished my course." While waiting for the service one could hear such remarks as these voiced by her neighbors; "Mary Ann vas a good woman, neighbor and friend and will be greatly missed. She was like a Mother to many besides her own . . . . " She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Austin Morris, born December 2, 1878, and was married to J. C. Sullivan. To this union four children were born, namely Evelyn of Mission Home, Tom of Hershey, PA, Clark and Bill of Waynesboro. After the death of her first husband she married Manis Sullivan. There were four children Vivian, Ralph, and Willie of Herndon and Clyde of Baltimore. Four brothers and four sisters also survive; Lev and Sel Morris of Dyke, Myrt Morris of Somerset and Columbus of Philadelphia; Mrs. Julia Gilmer of Washington, Mrs. Altie Pirkey of Arlington, Mrs. Evelyn Collier of Herndon and Mrs. Mabel Rice of Baltimore; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. At the completion of the service at the church the funeral procession left winding its way down the little mountain to the opposite ridge where the body was committed to "God's gracious mercy and protection" in the family plot. The quiet-spoken crowd stood patiently around the small cemetery by the roadside edge of a pasture west of her home to which she was greatly devoted. To each side and behind the grave were the formal tributes bearing the simple wordings as "Sister" and "Mother". On a beautiful hillside, under sprays of chrysanthemums and other flowers with the Blue Ridge in the background, sleeps the tired mother, sister and friend, Mrs. Mary Ann Sullivan, whose life will remain a cherished memory for years to come. "To live in the hearts of those left behind is not to die."

He lived his entire life in this area and attended the Episcopal Church. He retired from Daniel’s Construction Co. On Aug. 17, 1964, he married Eugenia Hansbrough, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Randy Sullivan, Route 3, Elkton; two daughters, Brenda Shifflett and Krista Williams, both of Route 3, Elkton; three half brothers; three half sisters; and three granddaughters. Ruby Sullivan Shiflett, 90, of Stanardsville, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at a Richmond hospital. She was born Sept. 17, 1911, in Greene County, a daughter of the late Willie T. and Nettie Shiflett. Her first husband was the late Earl C. Sullivan and her second husband was the Norman Shiflett. She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Benny, Louis, Everett, Cecil, and Leo Shiflett, and a sister, Mamie Herring. She is survived by a son, Ivan Ray Sullivan and his wife, June, of Stanardsville; three grandchildren, Ivan Ray Sullivan Jr., and Robert E. Sullivan and his wife, Manuela, of Stanardsville, and Sandra G. Sullivan of Barboursville; seven great-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Shiflett retired from Acme Visible Records and belonged to Evergreen Church of the Brethren. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Prize Hill Church, with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Mark Holder will officiate. Ruth Lydia Sullivan died Friday, June 7, 2013, in the home of her daughter, Ann and son-in-law, Ronald Dodson in Viewtown, Virginia, where she has lived for the past ten years. She was 92. After battling cancer for several years the Lord has taken her home. During her illness most of her family was able to comfort and be with her. Ruth was born on December 4, 1920, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where she met her husband, Harold. They were married for 65 years. She was the daughter of the late Arthur C. Sullivan and Ida Bell Shifflett. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold M. Sullivan; a beloved grandson, Richard Allan "Ritchie" Dodson; brothers, Roy C., Edgar M., Ellis W., and Joseph I. Sullivan; and sisters, Harriet Wise, Ethel Shifflett, Josephine Ritchie, Eva Sullivan and Evelyn Webster. She is survived by a brother, Meredith A. Sullivan of Waynesboro, Va.; daughters and their husbands, Charlotte and Butch Sesler of Warrenton, Virginia, Ann and Ronald Dodson of Viewtown, Virginia; her sons and their wives, Harold R. Sullivan of Culpeper, Wayne and Dottie Sullivan of Charlottesville, and Richard E. Sullivan of Tampa, Florida; very special friends, Shirley Lillard and Eddie Rivera. She leaves 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be greatly missed. Ruth and her family lived in Warrenton for about 10 years. They were the owners of Sullivan's County Store on Route 17 in Warrenton for years. After the store closed Harold went to work at the VHFS Commissary near Warrenton. After he retired, they moved to Ruckersville. Soon after Harold died in 2002, she moved in with her daughter, Ann. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed having her family come for Sunday dinners. Her chocolate and lemon pies were beyond delicious. She enjoyed making quilts and made one for each of her children. She loved houseplants and had beautiful African Violets. She loved her parakeets and her dog, Fluffy. She was a longtime member of the McGaheysville United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. She did a lot of volunteer work until her health declined. She was a homemaker who loved the Lord, her church, and especially her family. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet M. and Don Neff of Burlington, N.J., and Nancy L. and Robert Irons Jr. of Lexington; four sons and daughters-in-law, James Jr. and Sue of Harrisonburg, Carroll C. and Sandra of Stanardsville, Richard Sr. and Juanita Price of Timberville, Bobby L. and Betty of Danville; three grandchildren reared in her home, Diana Miller, Tammy Kitta, and Richard Sullivan Jr., as well as 13 others, Rita Hunt, Rhonda Goff, Chris Sullivan, Jayme Brooks, Joey Sullivan, Charles C. Virginia Bruce Sullivan, 83, of Charlottesville, passed away peacefully at Martha Jefferson Hospital on Thursday, March 4, 2021. Ginny, as she was affectionately known by relatives and close friends, was born on January 13, 1938, to the late Helen Bailey Bruce and Richard Bruce. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, William Elwood Sullivan. She is survived by two daughters, Rhonda Jones and her husband, Roger, and Ann Green and her husband, Stan; one son, William Sullivan; two grandsons, Daniel and Adam Jones; and cousins, Frances Walton and David Stoneburner. Ginny was a graduate of Lane High School, and worked as a nurse for 47 years before retiring at the age of 65 from Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge. After retiring, she was able to spend more time with those she loved creating memories that will last a lifetime. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Martha Jefferson Hospital for their care and support during this difficult time. The family will hold a private gathering in her honor. Boonesville Man Dies Of Wounds
Gun He Used As Club Discharges, Hits Him
A 59-year-old Boonesville farmer died last night of gunshot wounds suffered when a gun he was using to strike his son-in-law accidentally discharged into his own stomach. Walter Sullivan died near Owensville as his daughter's husband Gilmer Walton, 33, rushed him to the hospital. Walton was treated at the University Hospital for scalp lacerations suffered when he was struck with the gun. Sheriff W. S. Cook said the beating followed an argument between the two men at Walton's home South of Boonesville. Cook said the death would be listed as accidental and no charges brought in the case. Sullivan and Walton spent yesterday hauling hay, he said, and went to their homes about a city block apart, for dinner about 7 p. m. Cook said the men were noted for getting along very well and never having "cross words between them." After dinner Walton took out a new double-barreled shotgun, which he was trying to fix so that it would eject empty shells properly. After he cleaned it and worked on it, he went out of his house, fired the gun twice into the air, then went back inside. Cook said Sullivan heard the shots and came to the Walton home, asking, "What's the trouble here?" The men started arguing and Sullivan grabbed the gun Walton had been working on. The younger man said he was struck twice and fled from the house. As he got outside, he heard the gun go off in the home. He returned and found his father-in-law on the floor with the gun beside him. He told the sheriff he never struck at Sullivan during the argument. Cook said the stock apparently was broken off the gun when Walton was hit. Only the firing mechanism and barrels were intact he said. Both barrels fired and the charges caught Sullivan in the Stomach. Sullivan was still conscious when his wife rushed to the scene. "Mother, I've shot myself," she said he told her. Funeral services for him will be held at 2 p. m. Monday from the Gentry Methodist Church, near Boonesville, with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Philip Gresham, rector of Mission Home Episcopal Church, will officiate. Sullivan is survived by his wife, the former Louemma Powell, of Albemarle, two daughters, Mrs. Walton, and Miss Blanch Sullivan of Boonesville, a son, N. N. Sullivan USN, stationed at Green Cove Springs, Fla., and a half-sister, Mrs. Fannie Huffman, of Boonesville.

Wesley I. "Flappy" Sullivan, 58, of Troy, passed away on Friday, February 20, 2009, at his residence. He was born in Charlottesville on July 31, 1950, son of the late Irvin Homer Sullivan and Roberta Catherine Marshall Sullivan. He was also preceded in death by his brother, William C. Sullivan; and his sister, Gretchen A. Rush. Flappy was a member of the Woodridge Hunt Club and worked as a gutter manager with Stafford Home Products. He is survived by his siblings, Robert Garrison of South Carolina, Kathy Frazier and Bo Shaffer of Troy, Debbie Wade and her husband, Charlie, of Scottsville, Donna Hoy and her husband, Ronnie, of Scottsville, and Sandra Mills and her husband, Kelly, of Tyro; nieces, Kim Durrett, Niki Gibson, Shelley Gibson, Kristina Muldoon, Anna Nesemth, and Kelly Wade; nephews, R. J. Hoy, Jeremy Hoy, Mike Via, Bobby Garrison, Andy Wade, and Troy Wade; 16 great-nieces and nephews; a great-great-niece; and his constant companions, Cuddles and Destiny, his "babies". Special thanks to Eddie and Ann Sandridge, Wes' best friends, especially for the trips to West Virginia, 4-wheeling. He loved to ride his 4-wheeler, compete in 4-wheeler pulls, and working to make it go faster. Life was good when the weather was good and he could ride.
