BONNIE SUE TANNER MULLINS

Hampton -- Bonnie Sue Mullins, 67, born on May 24, 1954, passed away on November
26, 2019 at her home. She is survived by two sisters, Joyce Shifflett and
Frances Lawson; brother, James William Tanner "Billy"; four children, Bobby Lee
Eustler, Tonya J. Raines, Joseph Paul Dean III and Kimberly Mullins. She was the
daughter of the late William Albert Tanner and Frances Lucille Tanner. Bonnie
loved working at the Embassy Suites. She worked there for several years. She was
a hard worker and loved her family and children. She will be greatly missed.

CRIMORA - Charlotte Ann Tanner, 56, passed away
Thursday (Aug. 11, 2005) at her home. She was born on Nov. 24, 1949, at King's
Daughters Hospital, Staunton, a daughter of Mary Margaret Wolfe, of Crimora, and
Keezle Worty Wolfe Jr., of Mint Spring. She was a homemaker and wonderful
mother. She worked at North 340 Campground for 10 years. In addition to her
parents, she is survived by her husband of 33 years, Franklin Brooks Tanner; one
son, Andy Tanner and his wife, Linda; one daughter, Wendy Tanner Sutton and her
husband, Shawn; two sisters, Nancy Wolfe and Carolyn Wood and her husband, John;
two brothers, Mike Wolfe and his wife, Lee, and Dennis Wolfe; three
grandchildren, Sydney Elizabeth Sutton, Savannah LeAnne Tanner and Pierce Andrew
Tanner, all of Crimora; also, a number of special nieces and two nephews. She
also had some special friends who were her family, Barbara and Eddie Terrell,
R.D. and Lucille Morris and Paul and Martha Chattum. Services will be at 11 a.m.
Monday (Aug. 15, 2005) at Wayside Baptist Church with Pastors Jerry Cline and
Randall Blankenship officiating. Burial will be in Augusta Memorial Park. Active
pallbearers will be Richard Bell, Chris Bellamy, Jason McAlister, Eddie Terrell,
Jeffrey May and Raymond Gochenour. Honorary pallbearers will be R.D. Morris,
Charlie Miller, Clyde Reed and Paul Chattum. The family will receive friends at
the home of her daughter at 2 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 14, 2005). The family would like
to express their thanks for the support of Rockingham Memorial Hospital, RMH
Hospice Care, Gambro Dialysis Center and the AMC Dialysis Unit. Memorial

Franklin Brooks Tanner, 74, of Crimora, passed away early Monday,
April 1, 2013 at his home. He was born December 26, 1938 the son of Homer and
Lillian Tanner of Crimora. Mr. Tanner was preceded in death by his parents; his
brothers, Robert and Paul; by the mother of his children and by one son,
Frankie. He is survived by his wife, Bessie M. Tanner; brother, Henry Tanner;
sister, Dorothy Tanner; children, Carrie Tanner, Johnny Tanner, Franklin Andrew
Tanner and Wendy Tanner Sutton and her husband, Shawn; four grandchildren, a
number of nieces and nephews and by his beloved dog, Beth Ann. In lieu of

HENRY JOHN TANNER
Henry John Tanner, 60,
of Crimora went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at his
residence. Born April 23, 1953 in Trenton, NJ; he was the son of the late Homer
Franklin and Lillian Ann (Sandridge) Tanner. Mr. Tanner was employed with
Augusta Lumber and had been a faithful employee since 2000. Being of Native
American decent, he liked studying his Cherokee heritage. An avid sports fan, he
could almost always be found cheering on the Red Skins or Atlanta Braves and
always watching NASCAR racing. Henry enjoyed working on puzzles, playing corn
hole, fishing, and dancing. Those who knew him will miss his love for life and
desire to always have a good time. In addition to his parents, he was preceded
in death by brothers, Frank, Robert and Paul Tanner. Survivors include the
mother of his children, Wanda McPherson; son, Kevin Tanner; daughter, Kimberly
Tanner; grandson, Addison Tanner; step-children, Tracy Trimble and Peggy Sue
Miller; step-grandchildren, Brandon, Stephanie, and Logan; special niece and
nephew, Wendy Sutton and Andy Tanner; sister, Dorothy Hawley; numerous nieces
and nephews. He is also survived by his dog, Angel, who meant the world to him.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 1,
2014 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes with Rev. Ray

WAYNESBORO - William Albert Tanner, 62, of Rt. 1, Waynesboro died Sunday morning
at King's Daughters' Hospital in Staunton. He had been ill for the past eight
months. Mr. Tanner was born May 26, 1911 in Rockingham County, and was a son of
the late John Wesley and Lizzie Shifflett Tanner. He was a retired painter.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Lucille Hudlow Tanner; one son, Billy Tanner of
New Hope; three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Lawson of Elkton, Mrs. Bobby Eutsler of
Grottoes and Mrs. Willard Shifflett of Mt. Crawford; two step-daughters, Mrs.
Floyd Draper of Waynesboro and Mrs. Homer Morrace of Morgan City, LA.; one
brother, Homer Tanner of Crimora; two sisters, Mrs. Russell Wheeler and Mrs. Ora
Plume, both of Hagerstown, Md., and 14 grandchildren. The funeral will be
conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Henry Funeral Home in Staunton by the Rev.
Howard C. Smith. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive
friends at the Tanner home.

Travis Shannon Tate, passed on Tuesday morning, October 15, 2019, at the age of
33 , Travis was preceded in death by his brother, Brian Christopher Tate, his
maternal grandparents, Mildred Kathleen Gibson and Chestley Durwood Gibson, his
paternal grandmother, Lena M. Stinson, and his paternal grandfather, Willie D.
Tate and his wife , Virgie Tate, Travis is survived by his parents, Monte and
Martha Tate, of Earlysville Virginia, his brother's , Rodney Tate and his wife,
Kim, Eris Tate and his girlfriend, Jenny Layman. He is also survived by his two
children, Kourtney Paige Tate and Justin Brian Tate, and five nephews, Andrew
Hunter Tate, Lance Parker Tate, McKenzie James Doolan, Dalton Tate and Carson
Rae Tate. Travis was born on June 2, 1986. He was raised in Earlysville,
Virginia and was a graduate of Albemarle High School, Travis worked in the
construction field, He enjoyed riding motorcycle, motocross, hiking and the
great outdoors, He also loved spending time with his children and family.
Visitation with family will be from 5 until 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 26,
2019, at Hill andWood Funeral Home, 201 North First Street. Charlottesville, Va.
22902. The funeral service will be held Sunday, October 27, 2019, starting at 3
p.m. at Prize Hill Church with burial in the Church Cemetery in Boonesville,

AFTON LEE TAYLOR
Afton Lee Taylor, 59, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2020. Mr. Taylor was born
Feb. 4, 1961, in Charlottesville, Va., and was a son of Robert Lee Taylor and
Agnes Mae Conley Taylor. Afton loved reading, hunting and fishing before his
illness, playing dominoes, and being with friends. He never met a stranger he
couldn't strike up a conversation with. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Gay
Gaar Taylor, of 28 years; stepson, Jonathan James Gaar; brothers, Ricky Lee
Taylor and Davis Taylor; and close cousin, Bud Morris. A memorial service will

Blevin W. Taylor, 83, of Stanardsville, went home to be with the Lord on
Tuesday, March 8, 2011. He was born in Greene County, on September 29, 1927, the
son of the late Jesse James Taylor and Nettie L. Taylor. He was preceded in
death by two brothers, Gruver Taylor and Reese Taylor; and two sisters, Gladys
Kincaid and Alice Watson. He leaves behind his sister-in-law, Sylvia Taylor of
Stanardsville; his nieces, Mary Darnell and her husband, David, of Gordonsville,
Patsy Leonard and her husband, Scott, of Albemarle, Brenda Taylor of
McGaheysville, Linda Hamilton and her husband, John, of Harrisonburg, Joyce
Miller and her husband, Steve, of Pennsylvania, Ruby Moubray of Grottoes,
Patricia Coffman and her husband, Darrell, of West Virginia; nephews, James
Taylor and his wife, Sonny, of Quinque, Reese Taylor and his wife, Athena, of
Gordonsville, Donnie Watson and his wife, Phyllis, of Staunton, and Ray Watson
of Harrisonburg; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He is also survived by
special friends, Judy Pagter and her husband, Carl, of Stanardsville. The family
would like to give special thanks to his dear friend, Judy Pagter, for her
endless devotion, Warren King for always fixing his remote, and Diane Farish for
all her help she gave during his last months. A gravideside service will be held

Gruver B. Taylor, 78, of Stanardsville, Virginia, died
peacefully at his residence on Friday, September 26, 2008, surrounded by his
family. Born in Greene County on January 6, 1930, he was the son of the late
Jesse James Taylor and Nettie L. Taylor of Stanardsville. He was preceded in
death by one brother, Reese Taylor; and two sisters, Gladys Kincaid and Alice
Watson. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Shawn Travis Roach. He is
survived by his dedicated wife of 55 years, Sylvia M. Taylor. He is also
survived by a brother, Blevin Taylor of Stanard-sville; two sons, James Taylor
and his wife, Sonny, of Stanardsville, Reese Taylor and his wife, Athena Taylor,
of Gordonsville; three daughters, Brenda Taylor of Grottoes, Patsy Leonard and
her husband, Scott, of Albemarle, and Mary Darnell and her husband, David, of
Gordonsville. He is survived by six grandchildren, Holly Minter and her husband,
Richard, Jeremy Rinaca, Damien Taylor, Mandy Darnell, Alex Taylor, and Timmy
Taylor. He is also survived by three greatgrandchildren, Cierra Roach, Isaiah
Minter and Aaron Minter. He worked for 22 years for Virginia Metal Industries in
Orange, Virginia. He also worked briefly for Badger Powhatan, before retiring in
1992 from Cooper Industries. Gruver loved hunting, talking with his friends and
spending time with his family. The guidance he gave his family will be greatly
missed. Family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Sunday, September 28,
2008, at Preddy's Funeral Home in Madison. Services will be held 2 p.m. Monday,
September 29, 2008, at Preddy's Funeral Home in Madison, conducted by Pastor

GUY FRANKLIN TAYLOR, JR.
Guy Franklin Taylor, Jr., 72, of Weyers Cave, Va., passed away Friday, Nov. 15,
2019, at his home. He was born Oct. 31, 1947, in Vallejo, Calif., to the late
Guy Franklin and Charlotte Elizabeth Shifflett Taylor. Mr. Taylor was a member
of the First Church of the Nazarene in Harrisonburg, a member of the Izack
Walton League and Stonewall Gun Club. Guy pursued a career in telecommunications
and was a poultry farmer. He had a passion for hunting, fishing, and firearms.
His greatest passion was spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was
a great man. Anytime was too soon to lose him, but he was not afraid to go
because he knew he had raised his family right and left memories that will last
for generations to come. He was confident that he had made his mark by raising a
wonderful family and he leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered forever.
As he loved God — so he taught his family. In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by his brother, Charles D. Taylor, and a grandson, Bryce Allan
Hartt. Surviving is his wife, Winona Taylor; a daughter, Lorie Taylor Hartt and
husband, Brett; a son, Charles Allen Taylor, Sr. and fiancé, Tonya Vaughan; five
sisters, Dawn Crawford and husband, Tommy, Faye Bowman, Sharon May and husband,
Butch, Vicki Morgan and husband, Mike, and Terri Herring; several grandchildren,
Charles "CJ" Allen Taylor, Jr. and wife, Emily, Kynndal Hartt, Daniel Ross
Taylor "Woody", Cayse Hartt, and Cody Vaughan. Also surviving are numerous
nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his furry companion, Willow. A
funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019, at Kyger Funeral
Home in Harrisonburg. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18,

Taylor, Sr., age 63, of Constitution Hwy., Orange, Va. died at his residence on
Wednesday, July 6, 2011. He was born July 14, 1947 in Greene County, Va. and was
the son of the late William Brack Taylor and Elsie Mae Taylor. He is survived by
his wife, Elizabeth Kay Taylor, of Orange; one daughter, Margarite Elizabeth
Hitt, of Goochland; one son, Charles William Taylor, Jr. of Goochland; four
grandchildren, Rahel Marie Taylor, Monica Lynn McPeak, Allison Marie McPeak and
Tara Ann McPeak; three great grandchildren, Kelly Lewis Hitt III, Talon Michael

BRIDGEWATER - Russell Forest Teter Sr., 82, of 607 N. Main St., Bridgewater died
Saturday at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He was in failing health and had been
a patient at the Camelot Hall Nursing Home for three years. Mr. Teter had been a
carpenter for Rockingham Construction and a superintendent for Nielson
Construction and was a member of Bridgewater United Methodist Church. He was
born at Weyers Cave Feb. 15, 1902, and was a son of the late Parker and Alice
Shifflet. On June 9, 1919, he married the former Myrtie Knicely, who died in
1974. Surviving are a daughter, Helen Stoutmayer of Bridgwater; two sons,
Russell F. Teter Jr. of Bridgewater and Orville Teter of Fredericksburg; a
sister, Pearl Jernigan of Harrisonburg;, a brother, Paul Teter of Maryland; 10
grandchildren; and 18 greatgrandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m.
today at the McMullen Funeral Home in Bridgewater by the Rev. Carroll Goodridge.
Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home, where the

VICTOR R. TETER
GROTTOES -- Victor R. Teter, 74, of Grottoes, died of a heart
attack Sunday morning in Grottoes while visiting his daughter, Mrs. L. R.
Buchanan. He was the son of the late Park W. and Alice Shifflett Teter and was
born January 2, at Grottoes. He had been a patient at the Newman Nursing home in
Grottoes Since August 3 He moved to Mt. Crawford in 1914 Following his marriage
to Lura Jane Shaver, who died in 1926. In 1928, he married Bessie V. Roller who
survives and is now a patient at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Teter was a
retired carpenter and former employee of DuPlan and a resident of Mt. Crawford
North River Community for 37 years. He was a member of the Pleasant Grove EUB
Church and besides his wife, is survived by two daughters; Mrs. L. R. Buchanan
of Grottoes and Mrs. Ralph Trobaugh of Alexandria; two sons, Ben W. Teter of
Grottoes and John W. Teter of Baltimore, one stepdaughter, Mrs. Stanley
Showalter of Weyers Cave; three brothers. Charles W. Teter and Paul S. Teter
both of Washington, D. C. and Russell F. Teter of Bridgewater; two sisters, Mrs.
Hoda Jergian of Harrisonburg and Mrs. George Downs of Weyers Cave; 10
grandchildren and three step grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted
Tuesday at 2 P. m. by the Rev. A. K. Shumake from the Pleasant Grove EUB Church
near Mt. Crawford with burial in the adjoining cemetery. The family will meet at
the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. R. Buchanan in Grottoes at 1:15 p. m. Tuesday.
The body will remain at the W. H. Kyger Funeral Home until noon Tuesday.

Donna Gail Gibson Thacker, 71, of Charlottesville, Va., passed away peacefully on
Wednesday, May 15, 2019, in Richmond, Va. She was born on January 16, 1948, to
the late Hunter William Gibson and Edith Woodfin Sclater Gibson. She was also
preceded in death by a stepson, Ron Willis; and a sister, Walta Gibson. She is
survived by her two daughters, Susan Fenner of Ruckersville, and Buffy Deane and
husband, Calvin, of Rochelle; a son, William Willis of Charlottesville; two
brothers, Bill Gibson and wife, Thea and Scott Gibson and wife, Lori, all of
Charlottesville; two sisters, Linda Newton and husband, Curtis, of Powhatan, and
Emily Searcy of Charlottesville; and eight grandchildren, Cody Thacker, Dylan,
Kenton, and Callie Fenner, Maggie, Branson, Hudson and Andrew Deane. A funeral
service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2019, at Preddy Funeral Home
Chapel in Madison, Va., with Pastor Dale Freeman officiating. The family will
receive friends one hour before the service from 10 until 11 a.m. on Monday at

died at 2 p.m. Tuesday on Kenton Ave. on his way home after seeing his
physician. He was employed at Eaton Marion Division of Eaton Yale & Towne, Inc.
Born May 21, 1902, in Vinton County, he was a son of Lewis and Clara Hutchinson
Thacker. Surviving are his widow, Nora F. Shifflet Thacker; two sons. Lowell of
797 Merkle Ave. and Gary of 183 Chicago Ave.; four daughters, Mrs. Kitty Hartman
of Caledonia, Mrs. Rosie Roush of 352 Milburn Ave., Mrs. Carolyn Carey of RR 7,
Marion, and Mrs. Velma Lusch at home; 15 grandchildren; five brothers, Marion
and Norman of Forest, Arthur of Big Island and Leonard and Chauncey of Vinton
County, and three sisters, Mrs. Flossie Napper of 538 Silver St., Mrs. Rosa
Dorton of Athens and Mrs. Stella Denney of Vinton County. A daughter, brother

LADY LAKE, Fla. - The memorial services for Lowell J. Thacker, 73,
of Lady Lake, Fla. who passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2004, will be held at
11:30 a.m. Aug. 7, 2004, at the Mount Vernon Avenue Church of Christ, 947 Mount
Vernon Ave., Marion, Ohio, by Phil Williams. He was born in Hawks Station in
Vinton County, Ohio, the son of Lemuel and Nora Thacker. He moved to Lady Lake,
Fla. in 1988. Lowell was a steelworker and financial secretary/treasurer of the
U.S.W.A. 27 at the Marion Power Shovel. A member of the Ohio Club, active in the
softball league in the village. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. He was
a five-gallon blood donor and gave a kidney to his son in 1969. He is survived
by his wife, Loretta; sons, Douglas Thacker of Ypsilanti, Mich., Richard Thacker
of Chesapeake, Va; and daughter, Roxanne Fry, Willowood, Ohio; stepchildren,
Janette Scheff, 1llahassee, Fla., Annette Spires, Alabaster, Ala., Susan Staats,
Marion, Ohio; a brother, Gary Thacker, Ruthe Glen, Va.; three sisters, Kitty
Hartman, Carolyn Henderson and Velma Lusch, all of Marion, Ohio; eight
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
parents, two sisters, Nedra Thacker and Rosie Roush and a grandson. The family

Bowersville -- Connie Stewart Thompson, 54, of 11 Brown Road died Wednesday,
April 12, 2000. A native of Franklin County, Mr. Thompson was a son of Harvey
Elvin Thompson, Bowersville, and the late Willie Jean Shiflet Thompson. He was a
nurse with the Athens-Clarke County jail. He was the first male to graduate from
Anderson Memorial Hospital as an O. R. technician. He was an LPN and the first
nationally registered emergency medical technician in Georgia. He helped set up
the respiratory therapy department at Elbert Memorial Hospital, Elbert County
EMS in 1969 and Hart County EMS in 1974, where he was founding director. He was
a graduate of Georgia Police Academy and worked as a deputy sheriff in Elbert
and Athens-Clarke counties. He was recognized by the State of Georgia EMS
Directors Association for 35 years of service. He was a member of Nancy Hart
Masonic Lodge 690 and Lt. Dickson L. Baker Camp 926, Sons of Confederate
Veterans. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was a member of Cornerstone
Baptist Church. Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Strickland Funeral Home with
the Rev. Terry Meeks officiating. Burial will be in Nancy Hart Memorial Park.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include his wife, Vickie Bowen Thompson; a
daughter, Sharon Patrice Habel, Hartwell; two sons, Kevin Stewart Thompson and
Brian Keith Thompson, both of Bowersville; and three brothers, Harvey Gene
Thompson and Ty Thompson, both of Bowersville, and Blake Thompson, Washington.
Pallbearers will be members of Hart County EMS. Honorary pallbearers will be
members of EMS of Hart and Elbert counties. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be

JOHN FRANCIS THOMPSON
The Rev. Dr. John Francis Thompson passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at
Seven Rivers Hospital in Crystal River, Florida. He was born November 24, 1933
in Chaptico, Maryland, the fifth of nine children born to Alton and Margaret
(Shifflett) Thompson. He graduated from La Plata High School in La Plata,
Maryland in 1953.
Immediately after graduation, John joined the US Army and
served in the Army Security Agency in Germany as a crypto security specialist.
There, the poor son of a tenant farmer got to see Europe.
After completing
his service, John used the GI Bill and attended the University of Maryland and
earned a degree in Agricultural Education. He pursued a Master's Degree from the
University of Maryland while teaching Agriculture at Margaret Brent High School
in Helen, Maryland. He decided to pursue a PhD. from Michigan State University,
which he earned in 1966. While at Michigan State University, he met the love of
his life, Janet Morton. They married on August 19, 1967. They moved to
McFarland, Wisconsin where John was now a professor of Agriculture Education at
the University of Wisconsin.
John taught at the University of Wisconsin in
the Department of Continuing and Vocational Education for 25 years. There, he
taught teachers to be better teachers. He served as the advisor of several
student organizations and served as the Chairman of the Department for several
years. While in Madison, John also was a member of the St. Andrew's Society and
is a past President of the Lincoln Fellowship of Wisconsin.
While living in
McFarland, John served on the Village Board and was an advocate of allowing a
bowling alley being built in the Village as there was a lot of opposition. He
also was a weekly columnist for the McFarland Community Life Newspaper for
several years. John was an active member of the McFarland Lions Club for many
years, including serving as the President. In 1974, the family moved to the Town
of Dunn to a farm on which he grew corn and soybeans, rented garden plots, and
had a pick-your-own strawberry business. John was a very active member of Grace
Episcopal Church in Madison, Wisconsin. He felt the call of the Lord and when he
told Janet he was interested in becoming an ordained Deacon, she said "It's
about time!".
John and Janet attended classes at the Institute for Christian
Studies at Nashotah House Seminary in Nashotah, Wisconsin. John was ordained to
the Sacred Order of Deacons on August 25, 1984. John served as a Deacon at Grace
Episcopal Church and later at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Madison,
Wisconsin for several years. John and Janet were active in the Cursillo
movement.
John and Janet moved to Hernando, Florida in 1997. John served as a
Deacon at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church. John was also actively involved in
the Kairos prison ministry. He really enjoyed bringing the word of God to the
prisoners. John was also very involved in the Citrus Hills Bowling League and
the Citrus Hills Breakfast Club. John is survived by his wife of 53 years,
Janet, and his children, Brenda Thompson Le Shane of Hernando, Florida, and
Kevin (Heather) Thompson of Rolling Meadows, Illinois. His six grandchildren are
Willow, Aimee Rei, and David Le Shane, and Andrew, Joshua, and Isaac Thompson.
He is also survived by his sister, Katherine (Thompson) Dennison of Lebanon,
Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven of his eight
siblings. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced at a later

Gerald C. Thompson; three brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include a son,

Albany, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Conyer of Lake Park, Ga.; eight

PENN LAIRD - The funeral for W. E. "Willie" Thompson, 74, of Rt. 1, Penn Laird
will be held 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home, by the
Rev. Gary Ziegler and the Rev. Thomas W. Geiman. Burial will be in East Lawn
Memorial Gardens. Mr. Thompson died Friday evening at Rockingham Memorial
Hospital, where he had been a patient several weeks. He was born July 19, 1903
in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Joseph William and Arabelle
Chapman Thompson. He had worked at Wetsel Seed Co. 21 years and later was a
poultry farmer. He owned Thompson's Mount View Service Station at Penn Laird
1951-1968. He was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church and the Loyal
Order of the Moose. He also was one of 12 charter members of Harrisonburg Fire
Co.l. On April 16, 1927, he married the former Treva Shifflet, who survives.
Also surviving are three children, Donald L. and Shirley Thompson, both of
Harrisonburg, and Patricia Foster of McGaheysville; four brothers, Waller L.,
Carl L. and Elwood W. Thompson, all of Rt. 2, Harrisonburg and Frank O. Thompson
of Rt. 3, Broadway, and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held
7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home by Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1686. The
family will receive friends after the service.

East Lyme - Charles M. Tinker Jr., 88, of Niantic, died Wednesday, Aug. 10,
2011, at Bridebrook Healthcare. Mr. Tinker was born on March 12, 1923 in New
London, the son of Charles Sr. and Altha (Sheflott) Tinker. He married Helen W.
Brigham on Dec. 11, 1954 in Newport, RI. She predeceased him on July 17, 2003.
Mr. Tinker served in the Army in World War II. He was employed for many years as
a pipe fitter at Chesebrough-Ponds in Clinton. Mr. Tinker enjoyed "tinkering" in
his workshop and garage, and spending time with his beloved grandchildren. He
was known for his ability to fix things, and could always be counted on to help
his family and friends. He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Bienkowski and
husband, Wayne, and Diane Tinker-Knapp and husband, Paul, all of Waterford; his
sister, Norma Mitchell of Bloomington, Ind.; and his two grandchildren, Adam and
Kimberly Bienkowski. He was predeceased by a brother, Marvin Tinker; and a
sister, A. Harriet Tinker. Mr. Tinker's family would like to thank the nurses
and staff at Bridebrook for their compassionate care during his final days. A

Eric Milton Todd of Nottingham Eric Milton Todd, 61, passed away Friday, January
27, 2017 at home. He was the husband of Nancy Goss Todd with whom he shared 33
years of marriage. Born in Lancaster, PA he was the son of the late Donald and
Dorothy Shiflet Todd. Eric was a self-employed mushroom grower and salesman. He
served as West Nottingham Township Supervisor since 2006 and the Board of
Directors of the Oxford Area Sewer Authority. He was active in scouting and
little league and enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, good food, traveling and
boating. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Nathaniel Todd (Bub) of Oxford
and Mark Cullen Todd of Parkesburg; and one brother, Alan Todd of Mahanoy City,
PA. He was predeceased by a brother, Mark Todd. The family would like to thank
Lancaster General Hospital and Penn Medicine for their excellent care and use of
trial drugs for the opportunity to extend Eric's life. A memorial service will

Arthur Mack "Bubba" Tolbert, 66, passed away Monday, July 5, 2010. Mack was born
September 24, 1943, in Freeport, Texas, to parents Jack Marion and Ella Mae
Shiflett Tolbert. Mack grew up in Texas City, and graduated from La Marque High
School. He was a member of Pipefitter Local 211. Mack worked twenty-five years
for Becthel Corporation at Union Carbide in Texas City. Mack was honored to
serve his country where he was a Vietnam veteran and a lifetime member at both
the VFW Post 6378 and the American Legion Post 554. Mack was preceded in death
by his father Jack. Survivors include his mother Ella Mae, wife Olivia Strom
Tolbert; his son Andy and Keila; his children by marriage; Michael and Susie
Strom, James and Carrie Menotti, his grandchildren Madison and Mackenzie
Tolbert, Clay and Cory Menotti and Robert Strom. Mack is also survived by his

LaVerne Hensley Tooley, of Greensboro,
N.C., passed away on December 1, 2020, after battling a short illness. She was
73. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Hubert C. Tooley Jr. of
Stanardsville, Va. in August 2004. Mrs. Tooley is survived by a sister, Elvie
Clements of Schuyler, Va.; brothers, Virgil and Gene Hensley of Dyke, Va.; a
daughter, Marcie Tooley McCauley of Louisa, Va.; and a son, Hubert Carlton
Tooley III of Summerfield, N.C. Other surviving relatives include six
granddaughters, Alexis Sites, Aleaya Mayes, Alana McCauley, Olivia, Hannah and
Isabella Tooley, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. LaVerne Tooley was
born in Charlottesville, Virginia, and resided in Greene County for the majority
of her life. She was employed by Greene County Schools as a teacher's assistant
for 17 years and touched many children's lives with her loving, patient and kind
spirit. In 2007, she moved to Greensboro to be closer to family. LaVerne was a
talented seamstress and would dedicate her time and talent to anyone in need.
She spent the last months of her life making masks for people in the community
to wear during the COVID-19 pandemic. LaVerne had a deep passion for music and
singing for the Lord. She began playing and singing in the church as a young
girl and played a variety of instruments. She used her talents as the piano and
organ player at her church. LaVerne was a joyful, kindhearted and loving woman
who loved to spend time with her family. She spent her time playing with her
grandchildren at the beach, cheering them on at sporting events, teaching them
to sew and most importantly to her granddaughters, how to make her infamous
biscuits and gravy. She was a dedicated sister and a friend to all. Mama, you
have given so much and asked for so little in return. Thank you for always being
there for us, teaching us, listening to us, helping us, forgiving us, loving us,
and always paving the way for us to live and do good to others. We will strive
endlessly to reach the standard you have set. Farewell sweet mama; until we meet

Frankie Lee Townsend, 81, of Earlysville, passed away peacefully
surrounded by family on January 3, 2020. Born on September 11, 1939, in
Scottsville, he was the son of the late Floyd Otto and Lillie Mae (Layne)
Townsend. He was also preceded in death by siblings, Spencer, Carroll and
Clarence Townsend, Margaret (Tiny) Breeden, Pauline Bishop, Betty Townsend and
Rebecca (Peggy) Henderson. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Ann
Townsend; mother-in-law, Vernia Shifflett; a son, Greg (Debbie) Townsend of
Earlysville; and three daughters Frances (Gary) Walker of Nortonsville, Lisa and
Tracy Townsend of Earlysville. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael
(LeAnn), David and Christy Walker, Adam (Anne) and Jessica Townsend, and Ricky
(Sue) Collier; and four great-grandchildren: Dakota (Emilee) and Mikey Ellis,
Laci Walker and Abigail Walker. He was Pop to David Collier and Pop-Pop to
Travis Collier. Frankie leaves numerous nieces and nephews to cherish his
memory. Frankie was a devoted Christian and attended Southside Church of God in
Charlottesville. He drove a tractor trailer for Wilson Trucking for 17 years and
Tiger Fuel Company for 19 years. He was a devoted husband, dad and granddaddy
who took great care of his family and showed every day how much they were loved.
Due to coronavirus restrictions, a private graveside service will be held with a

3, 1914 in Weldon, Texas to William Jackson and Musie Townsend. He had lived in
Angleton since 1951, was retired from Dow Chemical, after 35 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Clois E. Shiflett Townsend; grandson, John
Wayne Brune; and great-granddaughter, Amber Brune. Survivors include his three

Carroll R. Tracy, 81, of Leitersburg, MD, passed away Sunday, Frebruary 4, 2018
at his home. Born Saturday, March 7, 1936 at Midvale, PA, he was the son
of the late Blaine M. and Lottie P. (Shifflett) Tracy. He was a veteran of the
United States Army. He retired from Doubleday Book Binding Company of Smithsburg
after 40 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul's Free Lutheran Church of
Leitersburg, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 of Hagerstown, Redmen Tribe 84
of Williamsport and Eagles Club Inc. of Waynesboro. He is survived by his wife
of 60 years, Connie L. (Shoop) Tracy whom he married June 15, 1957, sisters,
Alice Weicht, Nancy Hose, Ruth Draper and Janet Sulser, brothers, Harold
"Peanut" Tracy, Vernon "Dale" Tracy and Francis Tracy, nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by one sister, Beulah Tracy and brothers, Paul Tracy and

Midvale. The child was taken ill Monday and developed pneumonia. Surviving are
the parents and two brothers, Ralph and Carroll. Funeral services will be held
on Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at the home in charge of the Rev. H. M.

Ralph Wayne Tracey, 80, of 13554 Hollowell Church Road, Greencastle, PA, passed
away Sunday April 19, 2015 in his home. Born March 19, 1935 in Midvale, PA, he
was the son of the late Blaine and Lottie (Shifflett) Tracy. Mr. Tracey
attended Smithsburg, MD and Antrim Township schools. He worked 25 years for Ira
and Oscar Barr in their orchard and farming operation. He married Constance
Ellen (Barr) Tracey on January 2, 1953, and eventually, he and his wife
purchased the properties, known as Tracey's Orchard, from which he retired in
1997, handing over the reins to the fourth generation. Mr. Tracey's first
priority was to his family and his farm. He was a very dependable and committed
member to the organizations to which he belonged, including: past secretary, and
president, of Shady Grove Ruritan Club; Mount Pisgah Lodge #443; past president
of Franklin County Horticulture Society; Hollowell Brethren In Christ Church,
and most recently, Greencastle Otterbein United Brethren Church, and the Sunday
School Crusaders Class. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children:
Sandy Martin, wife of Randy, and Edwin Tracey, husband of Tawnya, both of
Greencastle; six grandchildren: Brandi Stevens, Heidi Myers, Lori Clopper,
Robert Martin, Sean Tracey, Megan Ruelas; ten great-grandchildren; eight
siblings: Carroll Tracy, Hagerstown, MD, Harold Tracy, Mercersburg, PA, Alice
Weicht, Statesville, NC, Nancy Hose, Falling Waters, WV, Ruth Draper, Fairfield,

Waynesboro, PA; a favorite cousin, Edwena Brown, and many nieces and nephews. In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Denny Tracey, who

formerly of Wilmington, passed away on Friday, August 21, 2020. Born in West
Nottingham, MD, Betty Ann was the daughter of the late William M. and Jennie L.
(Shiflett) Jones. She had attended P.S. DuPont High School before graduating
from Wilmington High School. Betty Ann graduated from Delaware Technical
Community College with an Associate's Degree in Nursing. Before retiring, she
worked as a nurse at Christiana Healthcare. In earlier years, Betty Ann was
active at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church and more recently at St. Philip's
Lutheran Church. Betty Ann was predeceased by her husband, George William
Trivits; her parents; and her brothers, William "Buck" Jones and Robert "Bobby"
Jones. She is survived by her children, Judy T. Verger (Carey M.) and Dean W.
Trivits (Lori S.); her six grandchildren, Jennie Hardy(Darin), Emily

The funeral for Gary Dean Trumbo, 46, of Harrisonburg will be held at 2 p.m.
Saturday at Fairview Church of the Brethren. The service will be conducted by
the Revs. Brian S. Hildebrand and Roy Hedrick. Burial will be in the Mountain
Grove Church Cemetery. Mr. Trumbo died Wednesday afternoon. He was born March
27, 1943, at Fulks Run and was the son of Harry Edgar and Shirley Shiflet Trumbo
of Fulks Run. Mr. Trumbo had lived at 3651 Singers Glen Road, Harrisonburg for
17 years. He was an employee of Packaging Corp. of America for 22 years and was
union steward. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served in the Army
1965-67. Mr. Trumbo was a member of the Fairview Church of the Brethren and it's
pastoral committee. On July 1, 1967, he married Carolyn Wenger Trumbo, who
survives. Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by two sons. Berkly
Stewart and Bradly Allen Trumbo, both at home; one sister. Mary Sue Crider of
Broadway; and one brother, Larry Eugene Trumbo of Fulks Run. The body is at the
McMullen Funeral Home, Route 10, Harrisonburg, where friends may call. Friends

DAYTON - The funeral for Robert Lee Tudor, 68, of 225 High St., Dayton will be
conducted 2 p.m. today at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home by the Rev. H.
Hasbrouck Hughes Jr., and the Rev. John R. Mumaw. Burial will be in Weavers
Church cemetery. Mr. Tudor died Saturday at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He was
born at Rocky Mount, N.C. May 28, 1905 and was a son of the late June and Susan
Tudor. Mr. Tudor had lived at Farmville before moving to Harrisonburg in 1936.
He had lived in Dayton since 1967. He retired in 1970 after 34 years as an
orderly at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and was a member of Asbury United
Methodist Church. Mr. Tudor was twice married. His first wife, the former
Lucille Baker, died July 13, 1966. On Oct. 1, 1967, he married the former Nellie
Bernice Shifflet, who survives.

He had been ill since January. Mr. Turner was born Sept. 1, 1934, in Rockingham
County, and was a son of the late William Everette Turner and Ilia Mae Davis
Turner. He was a member of the Elkton Church of God and the Elkton Neighborhood
Watch. He was an auto body and fender worker for Fairfax County before retiring.
On Dec. 26, 1953, he married the former Mary J. Stoneberger, who survives. Also
surviving are four sons, Keith LeRoy Turner, Elkton, George Calvin Turner Jr.
and Charles Everette Turner, both of Shenandoah, and Buck Turner, Grottoes;
three daughters, LaDonna Carol Wallace, Staunton, Rebecca Ann Wyant, Elkton, and
Baronica Louise "Bonnie"' Keyser, Shenandoah; a brother, William David Turner,
Manassas; a sister, Eunice I. McCoy, Fairfax; 14 grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four nieces; one nephew; three
great-nieces and three great-nephews. The Rev. Samuel E. Sponaugle will conduct

Thomas and Florence Shifflett Davis. Her husband, William E. Turner, survives.

Allen Doane Tusing, 67, Route 2, Timberville,
died April 15,1995, at his home. Mr. Tusing was born April 6, 1928, in
Rockingham County and was a son of the late Paul E. and Ruth Rinker Tusing. He
retired after 31 years of service with the National Weather Service. He served
in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of the New Market
American Legion Post 166 and the Lutheran Church. On Dec. 17, 1949, he married
the former Nellie Louise Shifflett, who survives. Also surviving are two sons,
James Allen and Martin Lee Tusing, both of Timberville; one daughter, Jean
Elaine Layden, Gloucester; one brother, James F. Tusing, Hawthorne, Fla.; four
sisters, Mary Ann Funkhouser, Baker, W.Va., Catherine Simmons, Manassas, Shelby
Jean Tusing, Richmond, and Elenora Hirsh, Mount Jackson; three grandchildren;
and three great- grandchildren. Pastor Don Smith will conduct a memorial service
at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Timberville. The

Mrs. Bonnie Jean Shaver, 66, of Mt. Crawford, widely known leader in the state
and area women's activities, died at 10:30 Saturday morning while sitting in her
automobile in Downtown Harrisonburg. She had not enjoyed good health for a year.
Mrs. Shaver was past state chairman of the Virginia Federation of Home
Demonstrations Clubs, and also a past district president and Rockingham
Chairman. She was the current president of the Mt. Crawford club. Mrs. Shaver
was described at one of the hardest workers and most inspiring leaders in the
Rockingham Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She had served as president on three
occasions. Mr. Shaver had received her 1000-hour pin for voluntary work at the
hospital. She was also active in the Women's Guild of the St. Michael's United
Church of Christ and a past president. She was a member of the Harrisonburg
Business and Professional's Women's Club. Her outstanding work with Home
Demonstration Clubs gained for Mrs. Shaver a place on the Governor's Safety
Committee. She is survived by her husband, Hubert M. Shaver, well know farmer
and orchardist. "Bonnie," as Mrs. Shaver was known by all her friends, was born
in the Mt. Crawford community where she lived most of her life. She was a
daughter of Elmer L. and Lucy Shifflett Tutwiler. Besides Mr. Shaver, she is
survived by two children, H. M. Shaver Jr., of Richmond, and Mrs. Elbert W.
Hill, of Bridgewater, and one grandchild. Funeral services will be held at
eleven o'clock Tuesday from the chapel of the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home
with her pastor, the rev. Robert Myers in charge. Burial will be in the Mt.
Crawford Cemetery. The relatives will meet at her late home at 10:30 Tuesday for

Stuart Eugene "Gene" Tutwiler, 83, husband of Peggy
Tutwiler, of 822 Berry Farm Road, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2016, in
Augusta Health, Fishersville. He was born September 19, 1932, in Rockingham
County, a son of the late Stuart Cecil Tutwiler and Myrtle Glover Tutwiler
Jarvis. He was a wonderful carpenter, building his home. He retired from Mary
Baldwin College. He loved hunting, fishing, and traveling to the ocean.
Gardening was his favorite pass time and watching sports on T.V. He was a member
of Verona United Methodist Church. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. In
addition to his loving wife of 65 years, family members include a son, Gary W.
Tutwiler and fiancé', Beth Shifflett, of Staunton; a grandson, Brian Tutwiler
and wife, Leslie, of Churchville; a granddaughter, Stephanie Tutwiler of Verona;
special great grandson, Brendan Tutwiler of Churchville; two sisters and a

grandchildren, Dennis VanMetre, whom she reared, of Martinsburg, Lisa Wilson of

Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010, at New Beginning Full Gospel Church, with the Rev. Oscar
Motilal and the Rev. Chuck Donivan officiating. Entombment will be in Pleasant
View Memory Gardens. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday,
Aug. 2, 2010, at the Brown Funeral Home.

A. R. VanPelt Dies In Penna.
Andrew Riley VanPelt, 71, a former resident of the Singers Glen and Harrisonburg
communities and a resident of York, Pa., for the past five years, died
unexpectedly Tuesday night at his home In York. Mr. VanPelt had not been well
for a number of years, but he had continued his usual activities and was
preparing to go to work when he was stricken. News of his death came as a shock
to both his family and to his many friends both in York and throughout
Rockingham County where he was well known. He Was born Feb. 21, 1882, In
Rockingham County and spent the early years of his life In the Singers Glen
section. He later made his home in Harrisonburg for a period of 25 years prior
to moving to Pennsylvania five years ago where he has since resided. Mr. VanPelt
was the son of the late David S. VanPelt and Hannah Moss VanPelt. Mr. VanPelt
was employed by Madison College for a number of years and also served as
custodian of the Harrisonburg Baptist Church. At the time of his death, he was
employed by the Hespenheide and Thompson Co., Feed Manufacturers. Besides his
wife, the former Ona Shifflett, he is survived by eleven children; Andrew
VanPelt, Sheldon VanPelt, Jimmy VanPelt, Mrs. Vivian Blosser and Mrs. June Fulk,
all of York; David VanPelt. of Salinas, Calif.; Mrs. Thelma Raynes. Mrs. Lavina
Vreeland, Mrs. Hannah Holsinger, all of Washington: Miss Reba VanPelt, of
Harrisonburg, and Mrs. Helen Stover, of Spring Grove, Pa. Thirty grandchildren
and seven great grandchildren also survive as well is one sister, Mrs. Mollie
Shifflett, of Harrisonburg Star Route. Two children preceded him in death. A
son, Nelson, died a number of years ago, and a daughter, Mary Ona, died on May
31, 1924. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock from the
Singers Glen Baptist Church, with the pastor of the church, the Rev. Gary
Baldwin, in charge of the service. Burial will be in the family lot in the
Singers Glen cemetery. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. The body will
arrive in Harrisonburg Saturday morning and will rest at the Lindsey Funeral
Home where relatives and friends are asked to meet at 1:15 o'clock Sunday
afternoon where a brief service will be held prior to leaving for the church.
Members of Mr. VanPelt's family will also arrive here on Saturday and will
receive their friends at the funeral home Saturday evening.

FLOYD VAN PELT
Floyd Van Pelt, a native of Singers Glen, died yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock in Newport News, of pneumonia,
which followed an attack of Spanish influenza. He had been ill only a few days and the news of his death comes
as a distinct shock to his many friends. Mrs. Van Pelt had been at his bedside since Thursday. Mr. Van Pelt
was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Van Pelt and was born at Singers Glen thirty-seven years ago. Besides his
parents and wife, who was Miss Lucy Shifflett, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David P. Shifflett, of Singers Glen,
and a sister of Mrs. W. C. Early. Mrs. J. Frank Moubray and Mrs. Granville Grandstaff, all of Harrisonburg, he
leaves seven children, Mabel, Herbert, Grace, Carvel, Nancy, Nell and Frances Van Pelt. He also leaves two
sisters, Mrs. A. A. Frank and Mrs. James Shoemaker and one brother, Luther Van pelt, of Singers Glen. The body
will be brought to Singers Glen for burial and arrangements for the funeral will be announced later.

Jerry Allen Vermillion, Sr, 75, of Strasburg, Virginia, passed away on Saturday
March 20, 2021 in his home. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 25
at 11:00 a.m. at Maddox Funeral Home with Sammy Campbell officiating. Interment
will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal with military honors
provided by the Winchester V.F.W. Post 2123. Jerry was born December 27, 1945,
in Front Royal, Virginia, son of the late James Marvin Vermillion, Sr and Marie
Fisher Vermillion. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and retired as a finance
manager. Jerry was a member of the Front Royal Loyal Order of the Moose #829.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 51 years Mary Elizabeth Beatty
Vermillion; son Jerry Allen Vermillion, Jr. and fiancé Angel of Sterling;
daughter Kimberly Harwood of Mesa, Arizona; brother Jim Vermillion, and wife
Anne of Stephens City; sister Linda Launders of Woodstock; seven grandchildren;
four step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces
and cousins. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Angela Marie
Vermillion; and a sister Joanne Felicio. Pallbearers will be Brady Vermillion,
Jordan Vermillion, Eric Fitzgerald, Stephen Balbuena, Nathan Duran Rosenberry,
W.T. Shifflett and Mike Shifflett. The family will receive friends on Thursday,
March 25 from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made

Mrs. Ethel Dofflemyer Vesper, 66, of Baltimore, Md. and a former Elkton resident
died Tuesday morning in Baltimore. She was born June 13, 1906 in Rockingham
County and was a daughter of the late Frank and Valeria Shifflett Dofflemyer.
She is survived by her husband, John A. Vesper of Baltimore. Also surviving are
a sister, Mrs. George Harding of Elkton and a brother, David T. Dofflemyer of
Elkton. The funeral will be conducted Friday at the Duda Funeral Home in
Baltimore.

Floyd Garland Viands, 86, of Shenandoah, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at the University of Virginia
Medical Center in Charlottesville. Garland was born February 18, 1928 in Rockingham County, VA and was the son
of the late Floyd Dewey and Elizabeth Frances Shifflett Viands. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by a son, Floyd Garland Viands, Jr., daughter, Paula Annette Benner, a brother, Max Oliver Viands, Sr.
and a sister, Helen Marie Breeden. He was a member of the Bethel United Church of Christ of Elkton and served
his country in the United States Navy during WWII. Prior to returning to Elkton in 1992, he had lived 18 years
in Springfield, Ohio and York, PA for 18 years. He was employed by Caterpiller Inc. before retirement, where
he was a Master Machinist, Tool & Dye Maker, and a Quality Control Inspector. On August 19, 1995 he married
Doris Mason Viands who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Gary Lee Viands of
Abbottstown, PA, Randy Eugene Viands of Shrewsbury, PA, Kevin Mitchell Viands of York, PA; three daughters,
Vickie Sue Breeden of Shenandoah, Karen Melissa Steeley of Craley, PA, Onie Drucilla Bell of Salem, WVA; two
sisters, Gladiola (Eulee) Murphy of Florida, Dorothy Lorain Breeden and husband, Curtis of McGaheysville;
numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Pastor Dan Bassett will conduct the
funeral service 10am Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton. Burial will follow in
the Elk Run Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm Friday at the funeral home in Elkton.

ELKTON - The funeral for Max Oliver Viands, 60, of Rt. 2, Elkton will be held 11
a.m. Saturday at Bethel United Church of Christ. The service will be conducted
by the Rev. Gervas Meinzer. Burial will be in Elk Run Cemetery with military
rites by Gooden Brothers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. Mr. Viands died Tuesday
at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Monday after
becoming ill Sunday. He was born Nov. 30, 1925, in Albemarle County and was a
son of Elizabeth Frances Shifflett Viands of Elkton and the late Floyd Dewey
Viands. He was a truck driver and had served in the U.S. Navy for three years
during World War II. On Sept. 21, 1959, he married the former Jacqueline Couch,
who survives. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by five daughters,
Connie Shifflett, Kathy Shifflett, Denise Monger, Rebecca Foltz and Rachel
Viands, all of Elkton; four sons, Wayne, Jay, Max and Robert Viands, all of
Elkton; three sisters, Helen Frazier and Lorraine Smith, both of Shenandoah, and
Gladio La Murphy of Woodbridge; a brother, Floyd G. Viands of Pennsylvania; and
14 grandchildren. The body is at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home and will
be taken to Bethel United Church of Christ 4 p.m. Friday where the family will
receive friends Friday evening.

Frank W. Vider, 87, passed away Dec. 28, 1997. Survived by his wife, Doris Vider-

Terry (Roberta) Vider, Jeff (Peggy) Vider, Thad (Denise) Vider, Larry Vider and
Bill (Erna) Rowe- a daughter, Bette Brezindine- numerous grandchildren and
great-grandchildren- and brother, Henry (Lorna) Vider of California. Mr. Vider
retired in 1974 from the Santa Fe Railroad and was a member of the Church of

GRACE MAY DAGGY VINT
BRIDGEWATER—Mrs. Grace May Vint, 77, of Mt. Solon died Tuesday morning at
Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Vint had been in declining health for several
years. She was born April 20, 1889 at Mt. Solon and was a daughter of Samuel and
Laura Shifflett Daggy. She was a lifelong member of the Mossy Creek Presbyterian
Church and was a former member of the women's circle. On August 19, 1926 she
married Roscoe Earl Vint who survives. Surviving, besides her husband, are one
brother, Edward S. Daggy of Washington, D. C, and two sisters, Mrs. Cora Lyons
of Washington, D. C. and Mrs. Rosa Spitler of Mt. Solon. The funeral will be
conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at the Mossy Creek Presbyterian Church by the Rev.
Millard Stevens. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be
Jared Dunlap, Lee Barr, Lester Zimmerman, Dudley Rexrode, Ernest Reeves and R.
L. Johnson Sr. The body will be at the W.L. Rosenberger Funeral Home until 9:30
a.m. Thursday when it will be taken to the church. The casket will not be opened
at the church. Relatives will meet at the Vint home 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
