WAYNESBORO - Graveside services for Jerry Lynn Painter, 25, of Waynesboro will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Riverview Cemetery in Waynesboro by the Rev. Howard Smith. Mr. Painter was killed late Saturday in a motorcycle mishap on the Blue Ridge Parkway three miles south of Rockfish Gap. He was born Oct. 17, 1951 in Staunton and was a son of David Painter of Waynesboro and Charlotte Painter Maybush of Indiana. Mr. Painter joined the U.S. Navy in October of 1975 and was stationed aboard the USS L. Y. Stear in Portsmouth at the time of his death. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and a 1969 graduate of Ft. Defiance High School, where he participated in interscholastic track and football. He was married to the former Rebecca Shiflett, who survives. Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a daughter, Brandt Painter, at home; two brothers, Dennis Painter of Waynesboro and Ricky Painter of Boonesville, Ind.; a step-brother, Robert E. Hamilton of Fishersville; three half brothers, John, Richard and Tony Painter, all of Waynesboro; a half-sister, Brenda Painter of Waynesboro; two step-sisters, Carolyn Flecker of Stuarts Draft and Linda Mayo of Waynesboro; two grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lacy Helmick of Lexington, and a step-grandfather, Justice Fretwell of Waynesboro.

Nicole "Nikki" Elizabeth Aldridge Palmer, 32 years old, of Dillwyn, Va., passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January, 31, 2019. Nikki was the daughter of Barry K. Aldridge and Angela Renee Shifflett, both of Fluvanna county. Nikki was preceeded in death by two grandfathers, Carroll L. Shifflett Sr., and Fred Everette Breeden Jr. Nikki is survived by her children, Alex and Jackson Palmer and their father, Shannon M. Palmer of Dillwyn; her father, Barry Aldridge and his wife, Belinda; her mother, Renee Shifflett; three sisters, Macy Cash, Morgan Brooks and Kimberly Bishop; two grandmothers, Corrie Lee Breeden and Carol D. Aldridge; one grandfather, Billy Aldridge; her aunt, Dorothy Shiflett and uncle, Gene; her aunt, Lori Robey and Donny; her uncle, Carl "Coconut" Jarrell; and by many other loving aunts, uncles and cousins; and her very best friend, Ashley Barber. Nikki graduated from Fluvanna County high school and was employed by Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. Nikki was taking classes working toward the goal of being a nurse. She had a huge heart and loved taking care of people. She had a bubbly personality that lit up the room. She was beautiful and funny and had a beautiful voice and sang all the time. The loves of her life were Alex and Jackson and her world revolved around them. She loved with her whole heart and was a special mother, daughter and friend. She is loved by so many and will be missed so much. The family will receive friends and family at the Teague Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 5, 2019. Followed by interment at Holly Memorial Gardens. The service will be officiated by Dave Vogt, to whom the family would like to give many thanks for his love and support. Pallbearers will be Carl Jarrell, Donny Robey, Gene Shiflett, Clay Rittenhouse, Troy Rittenhouse, and Adam Garrison. The family would like to thank Crystal and Roy Shifflett for their special gift.

EDNA MAY SHIFFLET PARRELL
Edna May Shifflet Parrell, 89, a resident of Middletown died Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at her home. Edna was born September 24, 1923, at Beldor, Virginia, the daughter of the late Ambrose W. Shifflet and Laura Morris Shifflet. The family moved to a farm near Hanoverdale in 1937 and Edna graduated from Hershey High School. On August 14, 1945, "V.J. Day", Edna was married to Nicholas F. Parrell, who preceded her in death on March 29, 2011. Edna worked at the Olmstead Air Force Base depot, and later as a tour guide for Capitol Trailways. She volunteered at the Middletown Historical Society and other local groups. Edna and her husband owned and managed several apartment buildings in Middletown. Edna attended the Parish of Saint Andrew Episcopal Church, Harrisburg. Edna is survived by one brother, Kenneth E. Shifflet, and his wife Anne of Harrisonburg, Virginia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Edna was preceded in death by five brothers, Dewey, Lunzie, Edward, Carl, and Otto, and by three sisters, Pearl Coleman, Nettie Sullivan, and Beulah Herring. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, December 22, 2012, at the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown. There will be no viewing. Burial will be in Hanoverdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10 to 11 AM at the funeral home prior to the service. Nicholas "Nick" F. Parrell, 94, of Middletown, entered into rest peacefully on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at his home after a lingering illness. He was born in Middletown on September 19, 1916 and was the son of the late Anthony and Caroline Adams Parrell. He was a retired employee of the former Olmsted Air Force Base, Lower Swatara Twp. and was an Army Veteran of WWII. Nick was a member of Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #594 of Middletown. He is survived by his loving wife Edna M. Shifflet Parrell; three sisters, Florence Haskin of Rockaway, NJ, Jean Motway of Friendswoods, TX and Josephine Abel of South Hampton, NJ; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank Mary and Scott Moore and Patricia Welsh for all their care and support of Nick. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, April 4, 2011 in his church, 280 N. Race St., Middletown, with the Rev. Louis P. Ogden as celebrant. Palmer R. Flowers, 67, husband of the late Esther Shifflette Flowers, died yesterday at his home on the Langhorne-Yardley Road Woodside, Lower Makefield Township, Yardley, RD. Born in Cleveland, Minn., he was the son of the late William and Lillian Rich Flowers. A retired teacher, Mr. Flowers taught for 42 years in public schools in Bucks County, Philadelphia and Camden, N. J. Surviving are a son, James P. flowers of Woodside and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be held tomorrow at the Middletown Friends Burying Ground, Langhorne. Rev. George E. Hollingshead Jr., pastor of the Woodside Presbyterian Church, will officiate. James (Fury) Partain, 77, of 200 Ashley Ave., died at 8 p. m. yesterday at Anderson Hospital following failing health of some time and a serious illness of the past few days. Mr. Partain was born Sept. 25, 1888, in Elbert County, Ga., a son of the late Lindsay Partain and Martha Rucker Partain. He was a retired carpenter and farmer and a member of the Oakwood Baptist Church and the Men's Bible Class of the church. He was a veteran of World War I. Survivors: widow, Mrs. Thelma C. Ina Kelley Patterson, 89, of LaGrange died Monday, March 23, 2009 at Hospice LaGrange. Mrs. Patterson was born April 21, 1919 in Carroll County, daughter of the late John Willis Kelley and Ora Shiflett Kelley. She had lived in LaGrange most of her life and was a member of Southwest LaGrange Baptist Church. Mrs. Patterson served as the pianist at Oak Grove Congregational Christian Church in Pine Mountain, for many years and was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Oliver M. ‘Pat’ Patterson, a daughter, Linda Pursley, and a brother, Herschel Kelley. The funeral for Roy Lee Payne, 72, of 265 N. Main St., Harrisonburg will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home. The service will be conducted by the Rev. He worked for the city of Harrisonburg 14 years and for Nielsen Construction Co. five years. In April 1934, he married the former Delia May Shifflett, who died Feb. 16, 1981. Sallie Paul-Beeler-Gifford, 87, Kokomo, passed away on Monday, November 29, 2010 at 5:55 PM. She was born in Luttrell, TN at 2:00 PM on June 13, 1923 to Jacob L. and Minnie Jane (Shieflit) Paul who preceded her in death. On June 25, 1938, Sallie married Vernon Clifford Beeler, and he preceded her in death in 1972. She later married Penecost P.F. Gifford in 1976 and he also preceded her in death in 1995. Sallie attended the Bethel Tabernacle Church in Kokomo. She retired from the Stellight Corperatioin after 30 years of service. She enjoyed weaving baskets, and weaved many baskets for her family. Sallie's greatest joy was spending time at her home, cooking and enjoying the company of her family. Sallie is survived by a son; Bill (Pattie) Beeler of Kokomo, a daughter; Patricia Crume of Knoxville, TN, a step-daughter; Cindy (Steve) Keene of Kokomo, daughter-in-laws; Judy Beeler and Teresa Gifford, eleven grandchildren; Russell (Lisa) Crume of Knoxville, TN, Lori (Mike) Christopher of Kokomo, Michael (Kena) Crume of Moorsville, NC, Gina (Charles) Amos of Muncie, IN, Jeffery (Jami) Beeler of Kokomo, Brian (Beth) Beeler of Winnetka, IL, Leah (Brian) Tate of Noblesville, IN, Jenny Gifford of Indianapolis, IN, Julie (Paul) Brewer of Kokomo, Christopher Keene and Amanda Keen both of Indianapolis, IN, 19 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. LEITERSBURG, Md. - Richard C. Peiffer, 87, of Little Antietam Road in Leitersburg, Md., died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at his home. Born Oct. 30, 1918, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late J. Wallace and Ruth (McKelvey) Peiffer. He was a 1936 graduate of the Hagerstown High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Europe during W.W.II and was in the active Reserves for eight years. He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Leitersburg. He was a life member and past president of the Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Company, life member of the VFW 6319 in Greencastle, Pa., member of the Last Man Club of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion in Hagerstown, Md., past secretary of the Leitersburg Grange Hall, and past president of the Pattern Maker Union of Washington, D.C. He was a wood pattern maker by trade and was employed by the Frick Company of Waynesboro, and the Landis Tool and Machine Company of Waynesboro, where he retired in 1980. He enjoyed model trains and making large scaled, very detailed model sail ships that he proudly displayed in his home. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, N. Marie (Shifflett) Peiffer, they were married Nov. 14, 1945; one son, Richard E. Peiffer and wife Judy Elaine of Smithsburg, Md.; two sisters, R. Joyce Waltz of Waynesboro, and Grace A. Peiffer of Leitersburg; two grandchildren, Jennifer Suzanne Manns of Grande Prairie Alberta, Canada, and Christopher John Peiffer of Smithsburg; nieces and nephews. Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006 from the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Leitersburg at 11 a.m. with Pastor Terry W. Culler officiating. Doris Ellen Pence, 78, of Elkton, passed away Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, at her home, surrounded by family. Mrs. Pence was born in Rockingham County, Va. on June 19, 1942, and was the daughter of the late Jennings and Ruth Shifflett Morris. Mrs. Pence was a dedicated member of Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton. She was employed with Blue Bell in Elkton and retired as supervisor from Wrangler in Luray. Mrs. Pence enjoyed preparing dinners every Sunday at their home. In her spare time, she participated in a bowling league, and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She loved traveling with her family to various destinations. She adored her grandchildren and was a faithful supporter of their athletic activities, especially East Rockingham High School athletics. On August 22, 1959, she married Theodore Oliver Pence, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Debra Breeden and husband, Brian, Lisa Jenkins and husband, Kip, and Stephanie Dofflemyer and husband, Greg, all of Elkton; one sister, Carolyn Shifflett of Elkton; nine grandchildren, Kristin Turner and fiancé, Chip Heiston, Nathan Turner and wife, Heather, Chandler Breeden, Alyssa Breeden, Olivia Dofflemyer, Logan Dofflemyer, Kaitlyn Plageman and husband, Tyler, Brycie Dofflemyer, and Natalie Jenkins; six great-grandchildren, Maya, Quorra, Ethan, Jenna, Mia, and Abigail, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jennings "Eddie" Morris and two grandsons, Tyler and Andrew Jenkins. PENTECOST, Dr. Julian Howell Sr., 87, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2012. He was the beloved husband of Mary Holbrook Pentecost, who predeceased him in November 2011. Dr. Pentecost was born in Lawrenceville, Virginia, the son of Aubrey and Belle Nelson Pentecost. He graduated from the University of Richmond and from Southern Baptist Seminary, and received an honorary degree from the University of Richmond. Dr. Pentecost was an ordained minister and served as pastor at churches in Waynesboro and Richmond, Va. The last years of his professional career, 1970-1992, he served as editor of The Herald, the news magazine for Virginia Baptists. He served as trustee at the University of Richmond for a number of years and was an active member and leader of many community and professional boards and committees. Dr. Pentecost leaves his beloved children, Julian Howell Pentecost Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Richmond, Va., Anne P. Considine and her husband, Bob, of Rhode Island and Nancy P. Siska and her husband, Brian, of Minnesota. He was the cherished grandfather of Lucas and Sian Siska, Anne and Taylor Wulf, Jason and Stacey Considine and Lee and Beth Considine. He was the proud great-grandfather of Liam, Seamus and Logan Considine. Dr. Pentecost was predeceased by his much loved brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Elizabeth Pentecost of Norfolk, Va. Dr. Pentecost and his wife enjoyed extensive travels in their lives and devoted their lives to their family and church. PENTECOST, Mary, 88, of Richmond, died Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at Lakewood Manor. The wife of Julian H. Pentecost, the mother of three, grandmother of six, and great-grandmother of three, she dedicated her life to her family and was so proud of each of them and the love they have for each other. She was a member of River Road Church, Baptist, and was active in many church and community activities. Mary was born in Augusta, Ga., on February 20, 1923 to Mamie Anne and Grover Holbrook. She grew up in Augusta and Savannah, graduated from Mercer University in Macon, Ga., and received graduate degrees from both Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Virginia Commonwealth University. In addition to her beloved role as a homemaker and minister's wife, Mary served as Religious Education Director at First Baptist Church in Danville, Va., and reading teacher in Richmond Public Schools. Mary married Julian Pentecost in August 1948, and after living briefly in North Carolina and Kentucky, she made her home in Waynesboro and then Richmond, Va., for many years. Mary was active in numerous church and community activities, was a member of the Tuckahoe Woman's Club, and was a trustee at Averett College for 15 years. In addition to her beloved husband, Mary is survived by her three children, J. Howell Pentecost Jr., and his wife, Kathy, of Richmond, Va., Anne Considine and husband, Bob, of Rhode Island, and Nancy Siska and husband, Brian, of Minnesota. Mary also leaves behind her sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Morgan Wynne; and brother, Clark Holbrook of South Carolina; and joins her deceased siblings, Harold and Drukelle Holbrook. Mary loved her six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and her memory will always be with them. She leaves Taylor and Anne Wulf, Jason and Lee Considine, Lucas and Sian Siska, and Liam, Seamus, and Logan Considine. A memorial service will celebrate Mary's life and will be held on Saturday, December 4, at 11 a.m. at River Road Church, Baptist. A reception will be held at the church following the service. Alma LaVerne Lamb Petersen, 88, died Friday, August 18, 2006 at McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden following a massive stroke. Born January 23, 1918, in Myton, UT to Floyd E. and Janet Hill Lamb. Attended schools in Myton and Roosevelt, and University of Utah, where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics in 1938. She got a job teaching school in Hinckley. While in Hinckley, she met Homer U. Petersen. They married June 7, 1939 in Salt Lake City and later sealed in the Manti temple. They had 65 years of happiness together. Exemplified, to their family, the epitome of an ideal marriage. Homer died nearly two years ago on August 31, 2004. Alma and Homer spent most of their married life in Delta, then became snowbirds with homes in Provo and Phoenix. Alma was visiting her granddaughter, Michelle Larsen, in Layton at the time of her death. Was a wonderful, caring and exemplary mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Survived by her daughters: Patricia (Larry) Ashby, Provo; Kathryn (Edward) Cole, Tempe, AZ; Beverly (James) DeWyze, Delta; and Marilyn Stewart, Gilbert, AZ; 16 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren. DELTA, Utah. Homer Udell Petersen, 92, died Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at his home in Phoenix, Arizona of causes incident to age. He was born December 31, 1911 near Deseret, Utah to Nels L and Edith Bennett Petersen. A graduate of Hinckley High School, he attended BYU, Utah State Agricultural College and LDS Business College. He served an LDS mission in Denmark from 1935-1938. Married Alma LaVerne Lamb on June 7, 1939 in Salt Lake City, later solemnized in the Manti Temple. Longtime resident and businessman in Delta, he owned and operated the Delta Milling Company for 25 years, was Sec. of Abraham Irrigation Co. for over 40 years, and served two terms in the Utah House of Representatives. He owned and raced some of the best horses in the state of Utah, which he loved doing. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, and he will be sorely missed. Survived by Wife: Alma L. Petersen; Daughters: Patricia (Larry) Ashby, Kathryn (Edward) Cole, Beverly (James) DeWyze, and Marilyn Stewart. 16 Grandchildren. 35 Great-Grandchildren. John R. Peterson of Wilmington, DE, died May 22, 2009 at the age of 90. The youngest child of John and Augusta (nee Sherman) Peterson, Jack, as he was known, was born in Wakefield, MA in 1918. As a teen, he was an avid photographer documenting his family's love of the outdoors in a darkroom which he built. After graduating Salutatorian from high school, he attended Tufts University where he received academic and athletic scholarships. There he studied engineering and was the youngest member to have been inducted into Tau Beta Pi honorary engineering society. Upon graduation, he completed post-graduate study at M.I.T. in chemical engineering. After receiving a commission as a Naval Officer in 1941, he met his bride-to-be M. Frances Peterson while stationed in Washington, DC. During WWII, he served in the Aleutian Islands as Commander where his staff affectionately named an air-transport hangar "Pete's Garage" after him. After leaving active service, he remained in the Naval Reserves for ten years. Following a career at DuPont in project engineering, Jack continued his life-long interests in travel, golf, and ballroom dancing. Predeceased by his daughter, Sharon J Peterson, Jack is survived by his beloved wife, M. Frances Peterson; his daughter, Julie F. Peterson, D.M.D. of Wilmington, DE; his granddaughter, Lauren F. McCauley and his grandson, Kenneth F. McCauley. Cherished for his kind and gentle ways, Jack will be dearly missed by his loved ones. In November 1943, he married the former Frances Shifflett, who survives. Mrs. Pittington was born July 22, 1932, in Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of the late Raynor and Nina Belle Shifflett Royer. She was employed at Sancar for 25 years before retiring. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, gardening and growing flowers. In December 1953, she married Walter "Pete" Pittington, who preceded her in death June 16, 1989. Survivors include a son, Larry Royer of Elkton; two brothers, Melvin Shifflett of Anchorage, Alaska, and Charles Royer of Amherst; a sister, Nannie Blakley of Harrisonburg; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and five great-grandchildren. J. Paul Polston, age 83, of 10 Glenview Drive. N.E., Rome, a retired Captain from the Rome City Police Department, died Wednesday morning, April 13, 2005, at a local hospital. A native of Floyd County. Mr. Polston was born on May 16. 1921, the son of the late John W. and Elizabeth Shiflett Polston. He had spent the greater part of his life in Floyd County and was a World War II veteran having served in the US. Army having been awarded two Purple Hearts. Mr. Polston was associated with the Rome City Police Department for, 32 years, having retired in 1978 as a Captain. Mr. Polston was preceded in death by a son, Paul Polston, Jr. Survivors include Eva Dempsey and four daughters, Glenda Brumbelow of Aragon, Diane Ely of Rome, Judy Carnes of Carrollton, and Janlee Craig of Home: nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; one brother. Just past midnight on Aug. 17, Jimmy Neal Potts lost his short battle with ALS. He was 81 years old. Jimmy was an active member of the community, a hardworking man, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, whose life was full of accomplishments and challenges that both molded him, but never broke his spirit. Jimmy is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patty Potts; his oldest daughter, Shelly van der Gaag; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Mary Potts; son-in-law, Jameson Bliss, and widower to Jimmy's deceased daughter, Anissa Bliss. He is survived by many grandchildren, Sara van der Gaag, Gabriel van der Gaag, Craig and Erika van der Gaag, Jessica and Tony Hatfield, John Barringer, Nicholas Barringer, Dakota and Tawni Potts, Kayla Hansen, Shelby Johnson, Victoria and Eric Onan, 12 great-grandchildren and one expected great-great-grandchild later this year. Jimmy was born on Oct. 25, 1937 in Corinth, MS to Barney Frank Potts and Artie Wyoming Shiflet-Potts, who later migrated to Northern California and settled in the Fairfield area. Barney and Artie had six children; Jimmy was the eldest of his siblings: Carolyn Wright of Fairfield, Dan (Cookie) Potts of Pioneer, Barbara Wilcox of Pioneer, David Potts of Fairfield and Debbie Galloway of Pioneer. He was a long-standing alumnus and graduated from Armijo High School in 1957. Jimmy worked several trades throughout his life, but was best known for his Sheet Metal work. He was a member of Local 104 for over 30 years where he later retired. He was a long-time member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Suisun, enjoyed square dancing, golfing, fishing and anything to do with the outdoors. He was a member of Bethlehem Brethren Church at Pleasant Hill and had worked for Shenandoah's Pride for 35 years. On Aug. 25, 1925 he married the former Evelyn Harpine, who survives. She was born November 5, 1936, in Covington, Virginia, a daughter of Jack Berkley and Edith May (Shiflet) Clements. Dawn was a 1954 graduate of Covington High School in Covington, Virginia, and in 1956 earned an Associate's Degree from Radford College in Radford, Virginia. Dawn was a Dental Assistant in Virginia, and was a past president of the Virginia Dental Assistant's Association. After moving to Missouri, Dawn worked in accounting at Jefferson City High School from 1984 to 1994. She worked for the Missouri State Legislature from 1994 until she retired in 1998 to care for her aged mother. She was a member of the Fairgrounds Road Church of Christ in Jefferson City. On April 12, 1980, Dawn was united in marriage in Jefferson City to Gilbert Rank, who survives at their home. Other survivors include two sons: George Thomas Keesee (Karen) of Salem, Virginia, and David Ray Keesee of St. Louis; two step-sons: Andrew William Rank (Billie) of Jefferson City, and Jeffrey Alan Rank (Brandie) of Lohman; three step-daughters: Valerie Ann Hawley (John) of Jefferson City, Michelle Renee Smith (Michael) of Russellville, and Jennifer Lynn May (Thomas) of Jefferson City; three brothers: Jack Clements (Lucy) of Calmeval, North Dakota, James Clements (Linda) of Claremont, North Carolina, and John Clements (Montra) of Roanoke, Virginia; 12 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Arnold H. Reed Jr. at home, and four grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Reece Shifflett and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Reed, all of Elkton. Elizabeth Reese Burroughs, 86, of Winchester, Va., died Monday, March 24, at Winchester Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Earl Burroughs Sr. Born Aug. 10, 1910, at Harrisonburg, Va., she was a daughter of the late James and Addie Joseph Reese. Mrs. Burroughs was a retired practical nurse with Chestnut Lodge Psychiatric Institute. She was a member of Woodbine Assembly of God. Survivors include three daughters, Jean Elizabeth Myers of Clarksburg, and Ruth Elizabeth Griffin and Rose Elizabeth Cantler, both of Damascus; a son, Earl Edward Burroughs Jr. of Winchester; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mollie Stover of Boyds. Mrs. Burroughs was predeceased by two sisters, Bessie Mathias and Ollie Reece; three brothers, Harry Reese, Marvin Reese and Pete Reese; and a half sister, Hazel Runion. The family received friends March 26 at the Omps Funeral Home, Winchester. Funeral services were held March 27 at the Woodbine Assembly of God. Burial was in Parklawn Memorial Park, Rockville.

The remains of JAMES DONALD REYNOLDS, 26, U. S. Navy, who died in the Naval Hospital in Los Angeles, CA, Monday, May 3, arrived in Hartwell Tuesday morning and were interred Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the cemetery at New Prospect Baptist Church, following funeral services conducted by Rev. Henry H. Dillard and Rev. W. A. Williams. Reynolds, BT1 USN, son of Mr. & Mrs. John R. Reynolds of the Nancy Hart community, died as the result of a motorcycle wreck in Los Angeles. He had been in the Navy for several years. The remains were accompanied to Hartwell by Military Escort William Charles Milton, HM2 USN. Surviving, besides his parents, are a sister, Mrs. John McCurley, and 4 brothers, Bennie, Edward, Fred, and Gene Reynolds, all of Hartwell. His mother is the former Miss Mattie Shiflet. News of the death of the young man came as a great shock to the family and a host of friends. He served in the Navy during World War II, and remained in the service following the cessation of hostilities. Hartwell Funeral Home was in charge.

Born in Hart County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Holmes Gaines and widow of Fred A. Reynolds. Prior to her retirement, she worked for 29 years with Milliken Judson Mill and then with Michelin Tire. She was a member of Deliverance Tabernacle Church of God. Surviving are six children, John W. (Lillie) Reynolds, Betty Reynolds (Mike) Cox, Fred H. (Linda) Reynolds, Larry D. (Rebecca) Reynolds, Jack M. (Carolyn) Reynolds, and James "Kenny" Reynolds; nine grandchildren, Angie Cox, Scott (Lisa) Reynolds, Allen (Martie) Reynolds, Todd Reynolds, Shelley (Del) Moses, Jennifer Cox (Ryan) Burger, Kyle (Mandy) Reynolds, Julie (Matt) Rogers, and Nicholas Reynolds; and nine great-grandchildren, Jacob, Will, Haley, Taylor, Carson, Chandler, Trace, Caleb, and Riley. Mrs. Reynolds was the last surviving member of her immediate family. The funeral for Ernest B. "Shorty" Rexrode, 63, of 759 Madison St., Harrisonburg will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Arthur Harris, and burial will be in Eastlawn. Mr. Rexrode died Saturday night at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va. He was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Dayton and was a son of the late Ernest B. and Ressie Roadcap Rexrode. During World War II, Mr. Rexrode served with Company C, 116th Infantry, 29th Division. He received a Purple Heart among other citations. On March 2, 1946, he married Martha K. Shifflett, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Ernest B. Rexrode III of Keezletown; three daughters, Rebecca Coleman and Brenda Miller, both of Harrisonburg, and Carolyn Whetzel of Linville; three brothers, Raymond Rexrode of Port Republic, Berley Rexrode of Indiana and Roy Rexrode of Waynesboro; five sisters, Nora Ward of Love, Eva Armentrout of Port Republic, Louise Oakes of Grottoes, Jennie Allabaugh of Waynesboro and Mrs. Woody Carr of Stuarts Draft; and 10 grandchildren. Mr. Rhodes was born on Dec. 5, 1964, in Rockingham County, and was the son of Winston E. and Brenda Shifflett Rhodes. He was a crane operator for Dean Steel, Harmon Construction, Cave Hill and Top Bead. He loved hunting, fishing, and was an avid outdoorsmen and loved making jerky. He very much enjoyed mechanics and was more than willing to help everyone fix anything. He lived life to its fullest daily. On June 29, 1985, he married the former Vickie Back, who survives. On December 26, 1975 in Mishawaka, Clifford married the former Myra J. Richmond, who survives. In addition to his wife, Myra, he is survived by daughters, Valerie (Jerry) Rudbeck of Simpsonville, SC and Marilyn E. (Dennis) Van Skyhawk of Charlotte, NC; son, Ray (Debbie) Rigley of Mishawaka, IN; stepdaughter, Catherine J. Husic of MI; stepson, Chris A. Schaefer of Mishawaka, IN; seven grandchildren, Melisa, Angela, Adam and Andrew Rigley, Jason and Jeremy Rudbeck and Katrina Brown; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Willis, Norman and Charles "Cy" Rigley. Clifford retired as a roofer and belonged to the Roofers Union #23, where he served as secretary for over 30 years. He was a member of the Shrewsbury Gospel Temple, the Alpha Fire Company in Littlestown and the FOE of Littlestown. In addition to his companion, he is survived by one son, Donald L. Rimel of Hanover; four daughters, Virginia M. Shanoltz of Gettysburg, Hazel M. Weaver and Phyllis J. Wagaman of McSherrystown and Judy A. Dr. C. G. Crist, Adams County coroner, said Rimel died instantly of a compound fracture of the skull and internal injuries. State police said Rimel was headed south when his Austin-Healy sport car crossed the center of the highway and collided almost head on with a northbound station wagon. Both cars were demolished with police estimating the loss at $1,700 to Rimel’s car from which one side was ripped and $1,500 to the station wagon operated by Junior T. Bittle, 36, 546 S. Queen St., Littlestown. Removed to the Warner Hospital for treatment for cuts and bruises were Norman D. Little, 35, Gettysburg R, 5, a passenger in Rimel’s car; Bittle, his two daughters, Lynda, 12, and Laura, 8, and a neighborhood playmate of the Bittle children, Robert R. Reinaman, 8. The injured were removed to the Warner Hospital here in the ambulance and released after treatment. Rimel, an employee of the Asplundh Tree Experts, was a veteran of five years of service in the U.S. Army and served in Germany, Japan and Korea. He was a member of the McSherrystown Home Association. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Betty Wiseman Rimel; one son, Barry E. Rimel; his parents, Alphia H. Sr. and Ethel (Shifflett) Rimel, Crouse Park, Littlestown; a brother, Donald L. Kenneth Glenn Reynolds died at 2:45 a.m. in Big Spring after his automobile overturned on FM 3033 4 ½ miles east of Stanton, according to investigating patrolman Wade Turner. Mr. Reynolds was born in Big Spring Feb. 24, 1950 but had lived in Martin County most of his life. He married Dorothy Shifflett in Big Spring Oct. 18, 1968. He was born February 24, 1936, in Ellicott City, Maryland, and was the beloved son of the late Mary Evelyn Thompson and Marvin Lester Ridgely, Sr. He was also the husband of the late Frances Lorraine Shifflett. He was a loving father to Marvin (and wife Alida) of Mt. Airy, Kim of Clarksburg, Thomas of Germantown, John (and wife Donna) of ljamsville, and Steve of Monrovia. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. He was affectionately known as "Bud" to his 7 brothers and sisters. Mary Compton (and husband Baker) of Laurel, Mildred Dawson of White Stone, Virginia; Bill (and wife Rose) of Martinsburg, WV, Earl (and wife Gloria) of Myersville, Betty of Frederick (the widow of his late brother James), Len (and wife Libby) of Falling Waters, WV, Betty Fraley (and husband Steve) of Thurmont. He will also be fondly remembered as "Uncle Bud" to many nieces and nephews. Marvin loved music. He could play a guitar, a violin, a piano, and a harmonica. He was never missing from a family gathering, always eager to play guitars with his brothers and sing the many songs he knew by heart. He was our "star." Throughout his life, he displayed lion-like courage when facing adversity, all the way to the end. He was a medic in the Army during the Vietnam War and had worked at Reynolds Metals more than 30 years. Wilmer S. Rimel, 70, well known carpenter of the Elkton section, died unexpectedly yesterday morning at ten o'clock at his home near Elkton. Although he had been in declining health, he had been able to be up and around most of the time, and his death came as a shock to his many friends. A son of the late Peter S. and Mary Shifflett Rimel, he was born January 10, 1877 near Elkton, and spent practically his entire life in that section. He never married. Mr. Rimel was a member of the Elkton Masonic Lodge No. 74 for 41 years, and served as tiler of this lodge for the past 22 years. One brother, L. C. Rimel, of Elkton is his only survivor. Funeral services will be held from the Mt. Olivet Christian Church Thursday morning at 10:30. Services will be in charge of the Rev. Floyd Fulk, master of the Masonic Lodge, and the Rev. S. E. Madren. Burial will be in Mt Olivet Cemetery at McGaheysville, with the Masons in charge of the service at the grave. Masons will meet at the hall in Elkton Thursday morning at 9:30 to attend the funeral in a body.

Irene was born on February 28, 1939, in Charlottesville, Va., to the late Luther and Vernie Breeden of Earlysville. She was a homemaker and a professional seamstress. She enjoyed cooking huge meals and never would let you leave her house hungry. She spent most of her time outdoors in her beautiful flower garden and enjoyed craft work. Irene married Hollis Roche, who precedes her in death, September 7, 1957, and they were married 61 years. She was also preceded in death by her two sisters, Betty Shifflett and Mavis Collier of Earlysville, along with brothers, Troy, Harold, and Alvin Breeden. She is survived by her son, Tony Roche and wife, Tricia of Earlysville; daughter, Tracy Roche and her friend, Mackie Lamb of Stanardsville; sister, Pansy Terry (Steve) of Amherst, Va.; and brother, Amos (Audrey) of Earlysville. She is also survived by a special nephew, Jimmy Breeden and his wife, Sue and son, Mitch of Scottsville; and a number of other nieces and nephews. She also leaves two special companions, Brutus and Bella to whom she loved very much. Bobby Lewis Robison, 47, of Rt. 5, Harrisonburg, was found hanged to death in his basement Saturday. A Rockingham County Sheriff's Department spokesman said the death is believed to have been self-inflicted. Mr. Robison was born April 9, 1934 in Rockingham County and was a son of Anna Shifflett Robison of Spotswood Mobile Home Parks near Harrisonburg and the late Norman L. Robison. Mr. Robison worked for Marval Poultry. On Aug. 5, 1955, he married the former Myrna Stephenson, who survives. Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter, Barbara Holloway of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons, James N. and Richard F. Robison, both of Mount Clinton; a brother, William F. Robison of Petersburg; and three grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bridgewater Baptist Church by the Rev. David Howell. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. Michael Lloyd Shoemaker, 22, of 374 W. Bruce St., Harrisonburg died Sunday morning while visiting his fiancee in Rocky Mount. He was stricken while visiting Kathy Laudermilk, whom he was to have married July 14, and was dead on arrival at Franklin Memorial Hospital. The body was taken to Roanoke for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Mr. Shoemaker was born Jan. 24, 1957 in Rockingham County and was a son of Beverly "Buddy" and Connie Shifflett Shoemaker. He graduated from Turner Ashby High School and was attending Blue Ridge Community College. He worked at Harrisonburg High School as an audio visual technician. Mr. Shoemaker attended the Church in the Valley. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Diana Lynn Shoemaker, at home; two brothers, E. B. LINVILLE - The funeral for Lucy Wise Showalter, 82, of Rt. 1, Linville will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home. The service will be conducted by the Rev. William M. Finley III, and burial will be in Mill Creek Cemetery. Mrs. Showalter died Monday evening at Camelot Hall Nursing Home, where she had been a patient for seven days. She had been ill for two weeks. She was born June 28, 1904, in Keezletown and was a daughter of the late Henry Adam and Mary Ann Shifflett Wise. She had lived in the Edom community for 37 years. She was a graduate of Rockingham Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and was a supervisor until retiring in 1974. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Club in Edom and Keezletown United Methodist Church. Her husband, John B. Showalter, died in July 1950. Her closest survivors are nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the Lindsey Funeral Home and at the home of Edna Harrison in Keezletown.

Jerry L. Shull, 65, of Scottsville, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2012, at his home with family and friends by his side. He was born on April 3, 1947, the son of the late Walter F. Shull and Lou Irene Crummett Shull. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, "Baby Girl Shull"; a brother, Robert "Bob" Shull; and a son-in-law, Joe Wingfield. Jerry is survived by his wife, Janie Shifflett Shull; three daughters, Angela and Tony Walton, Sheila and Kenneth "Bo" Walton, and Denise "Dee Dee" and Lee Wingfield, all of Scottsville; one son, Jerry "J.J." and Gayle Shull of Scottsville; a great-granddaughter, Desiree Gatling, whom he raised; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and one on the way; three sisters, Shirley and David Bishop of North Garden, Sue and Cecil Johnson of Charlottesville, and Mable Herring of Charlottesville; a number of nieces and nephews; and numerous devoted friends, including friends of Colonial Beach. Jerry owned and operated Shull Masonry for numerous years. He loved to drag race and going camping. He also enjoyed watching all of the old western movies. Curtis moved to Angleton at a young age and attended school in Angleton, where he was a member of the class of 1949. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lorene Sides Wade and Nola Sides Matheny; brother James Sides; and granddaughter Tammy Hargrove. He was a member of Operator's Union Local 450, and a member of Angleton Masonic Lodge 829, where he served as an advisor for the Angleton DeMolay Chapter. Mr. Sides was a member of the Baptist Church. Church was his life and he loved the Lord and his family. He was one of the last surviving members that helped to build the church on Aero Drive. Ronnie enjoyed shopping for Antiques, going to thrift stores and was known as the "Quarter Man." "Pop" never met a stranger. In addition to his parents, Ronnie was preceded in death by a daughter, Becky Blosser; a brother, Jesse H. Siron, Jr., and a sister-in-law, Mary Fisher. Robert (Bob) J. Skiera of Manistee passed from this life into eternal life on Thursday, Dec. 31, at his home. With him at his passing were his wife, daughter and son in-law. His death followed a short battle with kidney cancer. He was born at home on Jan. 4, 1938, to Joseph A. and Mary Ann (Kozlowski) Skiera. He was the youngest of their five children. Bob attended Saint Joseph Schools from kindergarten through high school, graduating with the class of 1956. Following graduation he began working as a carpenter with his older brother Tony, a trade he excelled in throughout his life. At the age of 16 he met and fell in love with his future wife, Shirley (Shifflet). They were married on Jan. 17, 1959, at Saint Mary's Parish in Manistee. They would have celebrated their 57th anniversary in January of 2016. He was a lifelong member of Saint Joseph Parish (The Catholic Community of Manistee). Bob was very involved with his children and their many activities over the years. He attended more sporting events then he could begin to count, was Cub master for Troop 120 for 12 years and a member of the Jaycees. He enjoyed the outdoors, loved to fish and hunt and in recent years took daily rides to check out the lakes and rivers and to make sure all was well around town. A lasting legacy, in addition to his family, will be the many homes he built in the area. He is survived by his wife Shirley, sons Mark (Sally) of Bristol, Tenn., David (Lynn) of Clancy, Mont., Paul (Dawne) of Naples, Fla., daughter Ann (Richard) Morehouse of Manistee. Grandchildren, Josh (Sara) Schubert, Courtney (Chris) Skiera-Vaughn, Luke (Katie) Skiera, Nicholas Skiera, Gabriel Skiera, Devin Skiera, Rachael Skiera, Kelsey (Chris) McEarchern, Brittney Workinger, Dylan Morehouse, Ethan Morehouse, and great granddaughter Penny Ann Schubert, who brought him much joy.
