Mary Chandler contacted me with a theory that through DNA, Stephen Shiflet's wife Elizabeth Powell may have marrid  Pierce F. Turner after the death of her husband and had a child by the name of Garfield Turner.  I am adding her comments below in hope someone will recognize the findings are can either prove or disprove this theory.

Mary Ellen Gatch Chandler (MegChandler1966@gmail.com) had a genealogical brick wall regarding her 4th great-grandfather, Garfield Turner. Based on DNA evidence and documentary records, she identified his putative parents as Pierce Turner (died 1803) and Elizabeth (Betty) Powell (marriage 07 Sept. 1787, South Hampton Co., VA.). Analysis of ThruLines for Garfield revealed numerous matches to individuals with the surname Shifflett from Albemarle County, Virginia. Tracing those Shifflett matches led to descendants of children from the Elizabeth Powell-Steven Shifflett marriage. Given the overlap of names, locations, and DNA connections, the working hypothesis is that Elizabeth Powell-Shifflett subsequently married Pierce Turner and was the biological mother of Garfield Turner. (Chandler/Paris/Gatch/Toombs tree on Ancestry.com).

Statement of Findings — Garfield Turner (4th great‑grandfather)

Subject: Garfield Turner — putative parents identified as Pierce Turner (d. 1803) and Elizabeth (Betty) Powell.

Findings

  • A marriage record shows Elizabeth (Betty) Powell married Pierce Turner on 7 September 1787 in Southampton County, Virginia.
  • Documentary evidence also associates an Elizabeth (Betty) Powell with a marriage to Steven Shifflett; descendants of that union are documented in Albemarle County, Virginia.
  • Autosomal DNA analysis (ThruLines) for Garfield Turner reveals a concentration of matches to individuals with the surname Shifflett from Albemarle County.
  • Genealogical tracing of those Shifflett matches connects them to descendants of children attributed to the Elizabeth Powell–Steven Shifflett marriage.
  • The convergence of documentary records, geographic overlap, and DNA match patterns supports a single explanatory hypothesis.

Conclusion The most parsimonious explanation of the available evidence is that Elizabeth (Betty) Powell (formerly associated with the Shifflett family) later married Pierce Turner and was the biological mother of Garfield Turner.
