    Carter Valley settlement established west of present day New Canton, Hawkens Co., KY. Settlers considered themselves to be Virginians, living in VA. Carter Valley was part of the major pathway for settlers heading west and south along the Cumberland trail. Before 1776, settlers had been organized into the Pendleton District of VA, and in 1776 they became part of Washington County and Fincastle County of VA. Although NC annexed this area as Washington Co., NC, some residents of Hawkens Co. continued to be part of Fincastle, and filed their wills there.

    Following deed of indenture entered into court record of Albemarle County: Indenture of 11 Nov 1760 between John Ogg and Elizabeth his Wife of County of Orange who sell to John Shiflet one certain tract of land containing one hundred twenty acres in Albemarle at the foot of the Mountains on Kids Creek and bounded beginning in the east side of Kids Creek in the old line, running thence with the same north east to a chesnut red oak, thence south east to a locust, thence north east to a chesnut red oak, thence north to a red oak, thence along several lines of marked trees to two chesnut red oaks on west side of Kids Creek corner to Benjamin Huntsman, thence down the meanders of the Creek to the first station.     Order to arrest John Shiflet at suit of Andrew Shepard assignee of John Ogg, for debt. Albemarle Co.

    John Shiflett Junior of Albemarle Co. takes out a personal property mortgage from Thomas Walker for £ 200 due and payable by 10 May 1776 on the following property: "one Negro boy slave named Isaac and one Negro girl slave named Hannah, one Roan Horse branded on near Buttock thus + one black Horse branded on the near buttock P one dun coloured Mare branded on the near buttock with a Panhandle, twelve head of cattle marked with a swallow fork and two nicks in each ear, forty seven hogs marked as the Cattle, three Feather beds and furniture, two Pine Chests, one Cotton Wheel, one Flax ditto; three iron pots, three pewter dishes, five basons, eight plates, and one Cart".     I Reuben Lindsay of Albemarle County do promise to pay or cause to be paid unto John Shifflett Junr. Of Albemarle County the full & Just Sum of eighteen pounds Virginia Currency for Value Rec'd of him to the which payment well and Truly to be made I find myself my Heir Executor & in the penal sum of Thirty sise [five?] pounds of the like money as witness my hand & Seal this 24th day of April 1775.
