First Generation

1. Harden I. Shifflett, son of Thomas Shifflett Jr. and Elizabeth Lamb, was born on 4 Oct 1792 in Albemarle Co., VA, died on 6 Jun 1837 in KY, at age 44, and was buried in Shifflett Cemetery, Salmons, Simpson Co., KY.

Fountain Shiflett was one of a batch of sons of Thomas Shiflett, Jr. Two of Fountain's brothers, Hasten and Hardin, left Madison County; Hasten moved on to Linn County, Missouri, where he was the patriarch of a number of Shiflett's; Hardin is buried in Simpson County, Kentucky in the Shiflett family cemetery in the northwest part of the county, just a short distance from the Logan County line. There are still Shiflett families living in Simpson County descended from Hardin.

Much information on the descendants of Hardin Shifflett was found in "The Shifflett's in America" by Edith Wilkinson Jameson 1964. This information was provided by Alfred Shifflett and Mrs. Minus Perdue of Marble Falls, TX

Harden married Elizabeth (Eliza) Bryant, daughter of William Bryant and Anne Watson, on 10 Jan 1813 in Madison Co., KY. Elizabeth was born on 17 Aug 1793, died on 23 Jun 1878 in KY, at age 84, and was buried in Shifflett Cemetery, Salmons, Simpson Co., KY. {FGID: 6838338}

Thanks for sharing your wealth of information online regarding the Shifflett family. As genealogy is always evolving as new information becomes available, I wanted to share a correction to your information regarding Hardin SHIFFLETT's wife Elizabeth "Eliza" BRYANT.

Eliza was the daughter of William BRYANT and Anne WATSON, married 22 July 1792 in Madison County KY. Bondsman was Joseph WATSON (her brother). Anne's parents were John WATSON and Margaret (my theory is Margaret GENTRY).

The William BRYANT that married Rachel WILCOXEN lived until 1834, but the William BRYANT that married Anne WATSON likely died or left Anne prior to 1801.

The marriage record for Hardin I. SHIFFLETT and Elizabeth "Eliza" BRYANT is signed by only her mother in 1813:

image.png
Anne WATSON had bad luck with husbands, and extant records are a little confusing as a result.

As stated, she married William BRYANT in Madison KY in 1792, and I have not been able to determine William BRYANT's parentage.

Anne was listed as Anne WATSON on the 1801 Madison KY Tax List, seemingly as the head of the household of her parents, and next to her brother Joseph's tax listing. I thought perhaps an error by the tax recorder, but then we see that she married Barton LOVELACE in 1802 in Madison Co., KY (Barton apparently married and abandoned three different wives), using her maiden name again (WATSON) vs BRYANT.

image.png

Barton has either left Anne or died by 1810 when she is listed as the head of household in Madison Co., KY (Anne LOVELESS), with one daughter aged 16-26; i.e. born prior to 1794 - and this is Elizabeth "Eliza".

Note that Anne's brother Evan Thomas WATSON removed from Madison Co., KY to the Warren Co., KY bordering on Simpson Co., KY by 1816; Evan had land in both counties. Seeing Hardin SHIFFLET and Eliza also migrated to Warren and Simpson Co., KY, I presume Anne is the female listed in the Harden SHIFLET household >45 years of age.

I hope you find this useful.
Regards,
Mark Watson

This is my direct line of the McPhail's. I have what you have for all of Harden's siblings. The source for Harden's marriages to #1, #3, & #4 are the marriage bonds. On these, he signs his name as McPhaill - with 2 L's. All of his children did also. My source for the Shifflett information is a copy from the Shifflett Family Bible that is said to have been kept by Elizabeth Shifflett. She also spelled her name "Shifflett" - with 2 F's and 2 T's.
Also, I haven't been able to concretely prove generations 1 and 2. So, please take that into consideration.

You said you have more information on Elizabeth Shifflett's family?! I don't really have a lot there. I would love to know what you have.

What is you relation? Hope to hear from you.
Jennifer

Obituary From The New York Times, NY, Apr. 16, 1949
FRANK AUGUSTUS SCOTT
CLEVELAND - April 15 - Col. Frank Augustus Scott, Cleveland industrialist, who in 1917 organized the War Industries Board, of which Bernard M. Baruch later became chairman, died here today. His age was 76. Until ill health forced him to become inactive a year ago, Colonel Scott served on the boards of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, the Cleveland Trust Company, Ohio Bell Telephone Company and Liquidating Shares, Inc., of which he was president. He also had been for many years on the board of Western Reserve University, which gave him an honorary LL.D degree. During the first World War Colonel Scott was chairman of the General Munitions Board before the War Industries Board was established. As such he held the power to conscript American industry during the war but never used it. For his wartime services he received the Distinguished Service Medal and a colonelcy in the Ordnance Department. He relinquished the chairmanship of the WIB in November 1917, only because he was seriously ill.

Active in Civic Affairs
Colonel Scott was president from 1920 to 1928, of the Warner and Swasey Company, machinery firm here. In recent years he had devoted himself largely to his industrial and civic interest. He also was a trustee of University Hospital and a corporate member of case Institute of technology. His connection with Warner and Swasey dated to 1909, when, as receiver, he wound up the affairs of the old Municipal Traction Company and became secretary of Warner and Swasey at the age of 35. Colonel Scott's first appearance in civic affairs was at 21, when he was retained as an expert on foreign freight rates by the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce. He served as assistant secretary and secretary of the chamber for ten years and in 1905 became secretary of the Superior Savings and Loan Company.

Two Financial Achievements
He was credited for two huge financial achievements, which materially affected present-day life in Cleveland. When the Samuel Mather estate, at the depth of the depression, proved to have depreciated below ability to pay out its primary bequest, Colonel Scott incorporated it to permit appreciation of its securities and with court backing, steered it to a far higher value than could be anticipated on Mr. Mather's death. Its bequest were largely fulfilled as a result. During almost the same depression years, when the finances of Western Reserve University were endangered by shrinkage and realty investment, trustees called on Colonel Scott to do the same managing job in hopes of appreciation of values and to keep the university functioning fully. He did both. He recently gave his 200-volume Civil War collection to Western Reserve.

Surviving are his widow, the former Dulcie Shifflett; a son, Malcolm F., and three daughters, Mrs. Katherine Ridley, Mrs. Eleanor Nealley and Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor.

This was the day He created the most kind, generous, compassionate, loving, fair, nonjudgmental, caring individual that many who knew her have ever seen. She was called Nancy Jo Shifflett. She was born to Alfred Shifflett and Regina Goethe Shifflett in Cypress Mill, Texas. She was the first of their three children.

Nancy grew up on the Shifflett Ranch in Marble Falls, Texas and loved her childhood in the Hill Country. She loved riding horses, raising livestock for showing, and being the big sister to Gina and Tommy. Her first real job as a teenager was working for Dr. Milton Shepherd where she decided that she wanted to be a nurse. This led her to TCU and Tarleton State University and a few years later, she was a Registered Nurse. She landed a job in Little Rock Arkansas, where she met her future husband, Will D.(Wild Bill) Fowler of New Orleans, Louisiana. The country girl and the flashy city boy hit off right away. They were married in Marble Falls on May 25, 1957. She gave birth to four children whom they raised in Alexandria, Louisiana where Bill worked as a Pharmaceutical Salesman and Nancy, embarked on a nearly 40 year career in nursing.

Nursing was the perfect profession for Miss Nancy as she was the ultimate caregiver, always putting everyone else's comfort and well-being ahead of her own. She was beloved by patients, employees and most everyone with whom she came in contact with. If any of her children, family, or friends were sick, or in a difficult spot in any way, it was always Nancy who was there to care for them and provide comfort. Even total strangers felt her loving, caring ways. You could sense her kindness like a warm loving light. People standing in line with her at the grocery store could somehow become friends in the time it took to ring in the canned goods. If a stranger sat next to her on an airplane, they often connected like lifelong acquaintances sharing fears, hopes and dreams over a two hour flight. Nancy was a walking embodiment of the good in us all. She was compassionate beyond compare. She befriended people from all walks of life regardless of age, appearance, race, life status, lifestyle, background or any other factors. She taught us all through example, not through lecturing, how we should treat one another. Whether we knew her as Nancy, Miss Nancy, Momo, or Mom, we knew how special she was and always will be.

Nancy retired to Marble Falls in 1997, not surprisingly to care for her aging mother. In retirement, her house on Sunset Drive in Marble Falls, provided a warm welcoming oasis for family and friends and a view of the land she grew up on and loved so much. In later years, when Nancy needed care and love when health issues and time took their toll, it was only fitting that she had plenty of loved ones ready to return the love to her. Leading the way, was her daughter, Kym who lived with her part-time and made sure she had a fun and adventurous last few years often traveling, seeing plays and movies, fine dining and generally having fun.

She leaves behind not survivors, but benefactors of her compassion and love including children, Kym Fowler of Austin, TX, Teri Hawsey(Ernie), of Logansport, Will D. Fowler III,(Deedy) of Alexandria, Louisiana and Robert Fowler(Kari) of Grand Junction, Colorado, her brother, Tommy Shifflett and sister Gina Ronhaar(Paul) all of Marble Falls, seven grand children including Chris Bordelon, Zac Bryner, Davis Fowler, Nathan Bryner, Jared Fowler, Ashlee Blunt(Raynard), and Lauren Fowler, and one great grandson, August Blunt. Special nephews are Ron Ronhaar (Jennifer, Lacy and Zac)) and Thomas Shifflett. Special friends include Norma Mercado, Jean Morris, Kizzy Green and family and the whole Real New Orleans/Smoking for Jesus crew that became her extended family. Awaiting her arrival on the other side are her parents, Alfred and Regina Shifflett, her husband, Bill Fowler, and her very special grandson, Brandon Meadows.

Nancy married William Davis Fowler Jr. William was born in 1926, died in 1981 in Alexandria, Rapides Parish, LA, at age 55, and was buried in Cremated. {FGID: 223817402}

Obituary From Unknown Newspaper
THOMAS A. SHIFFLETT
Thomas A. Shifflett, Jr., 78, was born in Marble Falls, Tx, on Jan. 8, 1940, on the Shifflett Ranch - earlier known as Lacy Lans. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Alfred Shifflett Sr. and Regina (Goeth) Shifflett and sister, Nancy S. Fowler, all of Marble Falls. He was the loving father of son Thomas Alfred Shifflett III. Also surviving are ex-wives Mary Ann Phelan Shifflett, mother of Thomas III, and Jo Ellen Patterson Shifflett and her daughter Amber. Also surviving are his sister Gina and husband Paul Ronhaar who both became his help-mates for the last few years. Also, nieces and nephews Kym Fowler, Will Fowler, Teri Hawsey, William Ronhaar (Ron), and Robert Fowler. Finally, special survivors are all the "Best Friends" who were too many to name. Tommy was a graduate of Texas A & M University where he was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets. He was an Animal Husbandry major who lived and worked at the A & M Swine Center during his third and fourth year. During these years he was on several judging teams which represented Texas A&M all over the country. The Animal Husbandry majors were a close knit group at that time, and remain so today. Tommy treasured his close friends from Marble Falls, all new friends, his Aggie friends, his army reserve friends, and he especially loved meeting new acquaintances until the end. When seeing a stranger he thrust his hand forwards to shake and said loudly, "I am Tommy Shifflett; it's good to know you." And then he shook hands vigorously. After college Tommy worked as Assistant County Agent in Gillespie County and then moved on to Travis County in the same position and worked there for a number of years. From there he decided to move to Marble Falls and the ranch. He found a special job in Marble Falls and he began traveling the country selling products for the JM Huber Corp. He worked there until his retirement. Shortly afterward, Tommy began a hay project with the City of Marble Falls. Tommy was a Master Mason and a member of Blazing Star Lodge #413. He also served on numerous boards in the city and county. Our special thanks and gratitude to all who made Tommy's life happy at the Oaks Assisted Living and the Windchime. As Tommy travels from this earthly realm to meet his maker, one can hear Tommy's resounding "Yeeeehaaaaw!" (When Tommy was at the Oaks Assisted Living, Mrs. Margaret Smith and her meal table group, Don Hibler, Grover Jones, and Tommy always went to someone's room after dinner to watch Wheel of Fortune. Margaret, a former school teacher, told the guys that if they had to be in a facility because they were unable to live alone, they at least could keep their brains working). When the program started and the announcer announced Wheel of Fortune, Tommy would yell "YEEEEEHAAAA" and the chant echoed around the room. Tommy carried this practice to Wind Chime where he would yell to let the girls know he was O.K. Sometimes, one would answer back to let Tommy know they got the message which translated: "I am happy and content; you don't need to check on me. ……and I love you all. "All the girls who took care of him were beautiful, and Tommy reminded them of that fact every single day. When a caregiver took his hand to reassure him, he would pull the hand to his face and gently kiss it. Tommy never went anywhere without meeting someone he knew ---- he could go to Kalamazoo, China, and the moon and he would meet 5 people he knew along the way. About 10 days ago, as Tommy lay on his hospital bed, he spoke loudly and clearly to his sister, "Hasn't life been wonderful to us! We've been so lucky and I thank God."

Thomas married Mary Ann Phelen on 27 Apr 1968 in Burnet Co., TX.4 The marriage ended in divorce. Mary was born in 1943.

Thomas next married Jo Ellen Brune on 27 Feb 1988 in Burnet Co., TX.4 Jo was born in 1948.

SHIFFLETTE JASON STONE 04/21/1952 STONE SHIFFLETTE M CALIFORNIA SOLANO 04/30/1952

My father was Capt. William Marshall Shifflette. He served on the Walker, my brothers David and Mark know this ship best. I being the baby remember only the Pt. Defiance. I was born when he was 49, 5 years after his retirement. His steward, Eddie Thomas, continued to work for him after his retirement.
He was born in Marble Falls in the Texas hill country in 1916. He learned to swim at the Naval Academy. I remember the only stroke he could do was a side-stroke. He graduated from Annapolis Class of 1939. Served in the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters during WW II. I grew up with the coffee stained battle map for the Normandy landing at Aeromanche hanging above the family fireplace. He was an officer on the flag ship. He said that was the day he thought he would die.
PG School 1949? He served in Korea. He gave me his bronze star when I was a boy. He really kept all this stuff in his sock drawer or at the top or back of the closet. It was my mother who wanted to hang up his sword, and frame the battle map later in his life. He was present for the hydrogen bomb tests on bikini atoll(1956?). He served on the Nato Staff in Europe (1956-1958?). He was chief of staff at Mare Island Naval Base in California. His last ship was LSD USS Pt. Defiance. He retired in 1960 to a career in management in aerospace.
He died on April 7, 1995 after a long, difficult illness, Parkinson's Disease. He is survived by his 1st wife Margerie Stone and their children David, Mark and Laura, all of Seattle WA. He is survived by his second wife Lucia Agan and their children William Agan and myself John Hardin. There are many holes here. It is information off the top of my head. I would appreciate hearing from people who served with my father and knew him.
Thanks, John Shifflette

MARJORIE STONE SHIFFLETTE
The force of nature otherwise known as Marjorie Orlou Stone Shifflette, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2013, one week short of her 94th birthday. Most thought she would make it to her birthday since she was not one to miss a party, but she apparently decided otherwise. Marjorie was born in West Seattle to Clarence and Hermina Horejs Stone on January 25, 1919. She grew up on Queen Anne Hill, graduating from Queen Anne High School and the University of Washington. At the UW, she joined the Sigma Kappa sorority. Many happy times were spent in a rowboat on Puget Sound at the family's summer house on Vashon Island, Stoneshore. In June, 1941, she married William Marshall Shifflette, a handsome young Naval Academy graduate from Texas, in Honolulu. The newlyweds lived in Honolulu, while William's ship, the USS Montgomery, was assigned to Pearl Harbor. On December 7, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, her husband's ship survived and escaped, but Marjorie slept through the entire attack. Throughout WWII and beyond, Marjorie was resilient. Two sons were born. She grew into the ideal Naval Officer's wife as she raised her family, helped Bill's career, and her husband rose in rank to Captain. The family moved frequently: to New York, Charleston, Norfolk, Maryland, Hawaii, Mare Island, and ultimately, Paris, where William was attached to NATO and their last child, a daughter, was born. In 1956, the marriage ended and Marjorie returned to Seattle with her three children to be closer to her parents. The family settled ultimately in Blue Ridge, where she ceased her nomadic life and lived the next 55 years in the same house. Marjorie returned to the UW to obtain her teaching credentials, and tackled her next career as a high school English teacher with aplomb. She spent 20+ years with the Seattle School district teaching students good grammar, the finer points of Shakespeare, and other literature at Nathan Hale, Ingraham, and other schools. Throughout, she supported her three children in all they did, loved them unconditionally as they grew up, got educated, got married, and made families of their own. She lavished love and gifts on her family, and every Christmas was an extravaganza to be remembered. Marjorie was a firecracker. She was always deeply curious, adventurous, independent, spunky, stylish, elegant, and had a wicked sense of humor. She was often opinionated and sometimes outspoken. She told marvelous stories. She treasured her friendships, and had friends of all ages. Her lifelong interests were travel, tennis, golf, bridge, and music. For her 80th birthday, she gave a classical piano concert in Benaroya Hall, attended by friends and family. In recent years, she has been cared for at home by loving caregivers from Andelcare, including Lisa and Amy, to whom the family is grateful. Marjorie is survived by her children, David Shifflette (Sonia), Mark Shifflette (Karen Homitz), and Laura Shifflette (Michael Passage); grandchildren Aimee Schermer (Jim), Pamela Sandblom (Victor), Heidi Schultz (Peter), John Shifflette (Karin), Peter Shifflette; Elena Shifflette (Laurent Gaudry), Luke Shifflette, Alyssa Royse, Bronwyn Holman (Justin); Dana Passage; great-grandchildren Natalie & Jimmy Schermer, Andrew Shifflette, Hans & Juliet Schultz, Marco & Mateo Shifflette, Celia Huddart, Zoe, James & Sarah Holman. A celebration of Marjorie's life is planned for February 8, 2013 at 3:30 pm at the Seattle Yacht Club.

Information Regarding John's Death from Martha 02/19/2007
Dear Loved Ones,
John died this morning. He was not afraid, though he had significant pain. I sang a soothing song to him just before he died, then stepped out of the room and he died when I stepped out of the room. When I came back in the room, I told him not to be afraid and to go toward the light. From the peacefulness of the room and from his face, I believe that he continued to be unafraid to the last. The kids and I are sad but OK.

John's body will be moved to the Ojai Valley Dharma Center (at the corner of Aliso and Montgomery) soon, and by this evening people will be able to come and meditate or say prayers with his body. Also, people will be able to write aspirations or prayers on his coffin to be burned with his body. In addition, any messages that arrive at our house by Wednesday will be placed in his coffin for the cremation. There will be a ceremony at the Ojai Valley Dharma Center this Thursday, February 22nd at 5:30 and a dinner to follow. There will also be an internment ceremony for his ashes on April 8th (time TBA) with a party to follow. (John has requested that we dance.)

My love goes out to all of you.
Martha
