Thomas Shifflet Sr. of KY/VA

Submitted by the late Julia Crosswell

Comments: Thomas and Elizabeth Lamb Shiflett migrated to Madison Co., KY sometime after 5 Apr 1798, and possibly as late as after 1803 when Thos. Austin received a patent for 82a. along the Linches River in Orange Co. from a survey dated 5 Apr 1798. His land adj. Henry Austin, Isham Lane, and Wm. Crew. [Land Office Patents and Grants, Grants No.56 1806-1808 p.169/70] It is believed that Thos. and Eliz. Lamb Shiflett migrated to KY along with Isham Lane and his wife Lucinda Lamb, both women being the daughters of Richard Lamb. One of Richard's sons also left. The two families must have kept in contact, for in 1843 Isham made a statement in support of Elizabeth Shifflet's application for a Rev. War widow's pension. There was a general migration from this area of VA to KY. In reading the1810 Madison Co. census, you would think you were still in Albemarle or Orange since there are so many familiar names.

Some information for this chart was obtained from the books, The Thomas Shifflet Family of KY and Shiflet 1700 - 1900. ANY additions or corrections would be welcomed. This is not my line.

Notes:
Submitted by Cheri Salz :

I just read some information that my Grandmother wrote and she may have been confused on her grandmother's name also as this is what she wrote.

"The next I have heard of this family was a Thomas Shifflet who served as a private in the Revolutionary War. He was wounded at the battle of Germantown in the hip. This was my Grandfather's Grandfather. My Grandfather remembered his grandmother and often said that she drew a pension as long as she lived because her husband was injured in battle.

This Thomas Shifflet emigrated to Kentucky when my great Grandfather was nine years old. My Grandfather's was namved Thoms Ephriam Shifflet. I do not know his mother's maiden name. Grandfather told me that his mother's mother lived to be 109 years old. Her maiden name was Hardin. Her mother was a Jiles and lived to be 106. Her mother was a Lamb by name.

My Grandfather and Grandmother Shifflet were first cousins. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Orchard. She was the granddaughter of Susan Shifflet Owens. In other words the father of Thomas Ephriam Shifflet and Susan Shifflet Owens were brother and sister."

She later says that "The Thomas Shifflet who came to Kentucky at the age of nine years had two sons named Thomas and Fountain."

Reading some of this I think even Grandma got confused. She has some facts here slightly different from what I have been reading on the net so I wanted to put them forth and see if we learn anything new.

The following was submitted by Dennis J. Adams hardstripe@sprintmail.com INVALID.

It is a page from a from an Estill Co. Historical Society publication that he found filed in the Shifflet Family History located in the Kentucky State Historical Library, Frankfort KY.

Although several points are in error, I am including it for other information and to also highlight the danger of relying on other's published information without doing any verification for yourself! Areas we KNOW to be incorrect are in red text and I have included some comments by me (Julia Crosswell) in blue. For you sticklers of truth, I've chosen to ignore the editorial comments.

THOMAS SHIFFLET
Virginia Pension No. w-87l8

Thomas Shifflet was born in France about 1756. He was the son of Thomas Shifflet, Senior, and Elizabeth Mabie.
--This possibly a mis-transcription of " Elizabeth (maybe?)", however, there is a Mabe family but we have not yet found a connection to them through the Shiflets or any of the allied families. Also, the error that Thomas was b. in France cannot be laid at this author's feet, since this misinformation was originally published in a Rev. War compendium of soldiers, and she was simply repeating the info.

England had always been the traditional enemy of France, so Thomas came over to fight in the battle for independence when the Colonists went to war with the British.
--We now know the original Thomas Shiflet SR. who we believe was m. to Patience and was the father of Thomas Shiflet Sr. of Kentucky fought in the French and Indian War in the 1750's, so the Shiflets were here a LONG time before the Rev. War.

Thomas was a Militiaman from Albemarle County, and later, Orange County, Virginia.
--This error probably occured because when Elizabeth Lamb Shiflett originally submitted her pension application, she stated her husband was from Orange Co. Because of that, her pension was originally rejected and Isom Lane had to file an amendment clarifying that Thomas actually lived a mile or so from Elizabeth's parents house in ORANGE, and she had assumed he lived in Orange also, although he really lived in ALBEMARLE.

He served in Captain Henry Berkes' Company and Colonel Reuben Lindsey's Regiment. He was present at Yorktown when the British General Cornwallis surrendered in 1781. He is mentioned in the "Virginia magazine of History and Biography" and in the "Washington Manuscripts" in the Library of Congress.

During the war, Thomas met Miss Elizabeth Lamb of Orange County, Virginia, because her father, Richard Lamb, and her grandfather, Joseph Boswell, were giving aid and furnishing supplies to the army.
--This implies that Thomas just happened to meet Eliz. Lamb in his job as a soldier, which is incorrect. Both of their families were registered members of the Buck Mountain Church. This statement also implies that Richard Lamb m. the daughter of Joseph Boswell and we need to find documentation for that

After the war was over, Thomas became an American citizen and married Elizabeth Lamb on June 20, 1788 in Orange County, Virginia.
--Thomas was b. in VA, and was therefore already a " British colonial" at the time of his birth. After the war, he would have been an "American" citizen.

In the late 1700's, Thomas and his family, a man named Isom Lane and his family and some other relatives moved to Madison County, Kentucky and settled in the section which lies in the upper Drowning Creek area just across the line from what is now Estill County. Since all of these people had children and there was no school, Thomas Shifflet built a one room log building which for years was called the "Shifflet School" [photo]. One of Thomas Shifflet's and Isom Lane's descendants is a man named Raymond Lane who lives on Adams Street in Berea, Kentucky. Mr. Lane is a retired school teacher who does wood working as a hobby. Several years ago, Mr. Lane tore down the old Shifflet log house in rural Madison County and moved it to a vacant lot that he owned across the street from his house in Berea. He numbered the logs as he tore it down and did the same with the rocks from the chinney. He rebuilt it just as it was originally and has the inside furnished like an old time one room school house.

Thomas Shifflet died on March 14, 1823 in Madison County, Kentucky. After he died, Elizabeth Lamb Shifflet was granted a pension for her husband's service in the Revolutionary War. In her pension application she was very proud of the fact that she had given birth to twelve children and raised them all.

Thomas and Elizabeth are buried in an old family cemetery on a hill near Panola in Madison County. They have descendants in Estill County, Including several members of our Society.
