This is the only mention of Richard's wife's name. It is assumed that this Nathaniel is the Nathaniel mentioned in Richard's will.

Proctor who affirmed that Betsy upwards of 21 years who gives consent; witness Joshua Sandridge and Austin Sandridge.

The 1880 census shows Elizabeth Proctor as 97 years old  (There is a William Proctor listed on the 1785 census for Albemarle Co. with 5 white souls. Could this be Betsy's father?)

On March 28, 1999 I drove to Pancoastburg, Ohio (also known to the locals as Waterloo) and found the Waterloo Cemetery at the north edge of town. After walking around in the cemetery for a few minutes I came upon three grave markers:

Mexican War		 Solomon Shipley
Co. G
73rd Ohio Infantry		 J. M. Shipley
died
Jan. 5, 1874
Aged
20 yers. 8 mos.
There were some other things on the bottom of J. M. Shipley's monument but I could not read them. Obviously, Nath'l Shipley was the father of Solomon Shipley and the Solomon buried in the same plot is most likely one of his sons. J. M. Shipley is probably Nathaniel's son James. Our records indicate he died about 1874.

I met the township trustee, Tom Lindsay, who lives just north of McCaffery Road at the farm on the west side of the road called "Polly Acres." He said the burial records were lost in a fire in 1950 but they do have a plot map of the cemetery in the township hall in Madison Mills.

It is intersting to note that Nath'l Shipley served as a "U.S. Soldier" in the Mexican War, according to the inscription on his tombstone. However, Ray A. Fannin from Washington C. H. wrote to me on April 1, 1999 that "Nathaniel Shipley was actually in the War of 1812, where he was crippled while felling trees wit the army. That is one of the reasons the family left Virginia. He was granted a tract of Bounty Land in what is now Jackson County, Ohio."

In the cemetery at the north edge of New Holland, Ohio are tombstones with the following information:

Mother. . . May Shipley 1878 - 1937
Son . . . Walter 1904 - 1909
Daughter . . . Frances 1902 - 1909

Lillis Shipley Fausnaught, sister of Grover Shipley, S.r told me that Solomon Nathaniel Shiflit is buried in the Waterloo Cemetery at a little crossroads town called Pancoastburg. In Lillis' records, Solomon's wife is listed as Fannie Francis Powell. I think her nickname was Fannie. In other records it shows her name as Francis Herring.

Grover Shipley Sr. and his sister, Lillis Shipley Fausnaught on March 8, 1999 told me the story that "Solomon, in the dead of winter, went out to the lake (or pond) on their property, broke a hole in the ice and threw himself into the water, thereby committing suicide." Record shows he died in March (not the dead of winter) and was 63 years of age.

Hamilton Shipley had 7 brothers: Jim, Chap, Bluf, Doug, Sylvester, Wilcie and Joe. Joe was Luella Barker's husband.

When Bina Mae Shipley was a little girl, about 9 - 10 years of age, Hamilton and Sarah both died from typhoid fever, leaving 4 little children. Ursel and Lyle were placed in a foster home. A New Holland family adopted Ursel and sent her through high school and college. Lyle went to live with Ike Funke, probably in New Holland. Lyle later served in the U.S. Army during WWI. Bina and Willis were placed in the Fayette Co. children's home, where they stayed for several years. Willis went to live with Issira (probably Isaiah) Shipley in London, OH. Bina went to live with her grandparents, Albert and Effie Barker, in New Holland. When Bina was still living, one of the greatest thrills was to be driven back to New Holland so she could see the old places were she lived and grew up. We usually drove the same route every time. . . we went to Sedalia and drove around the Methodist Church and past the place where the Barker house was (now an empty lot). We always talked about how Odie's grandmother, Alice May Hoppes, dropped dead in the doorway of the Methodist Chrch in Sedalia. We always went to the Range Cemetery just east of Sedalia, to see the graves of Odie's parents and Uncle Ruie. We always talked about Uncle Ruie (name was actually LaRue) and how he was "not right." Uncle Ruie was born crippled and retarded, could not walk nor care for himself and lived to an old age. Then we would go to Bloomingburg, OH just down the road from Sedalia to see Odie's sister, Aunt Chole Davis Howsman and her husband, Ernest, who was a blacksmith in that town. I remember as a child Uncle Ernest allowing me to use his horsehair flyswatter to keep the flies off the horses as he made and put on new shoes. We would then visit the cemtery at Bloomingburg and then off to New Holland, where we would visit the old haunts of the Shipley kids (Bina, etc.) We would always end up at the big cemetery just to the north but in town. There we would search for and always find the graves of all the deceased Shipleys and Barkers. There are many names on one large stone. We have never found graves for Hamilton or Sarah Shipley.
