STANARDSVILLE - Mrs. Alex Dunnivan, 81, died yesterday at the home of her son, George W. Dunnivan, near Stanardsville. The former Icey Seny Shifflett, she was born in Greene County, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Shifflett. Her survivors include one other son, Andrew W. Dunnivan of Stanardsville; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the home of George W. Dunivan with burial in the family cemetery.

Ida Belle Finch Comer, 75, of Shenandoah, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg. Born June 17, 1927, in Rockingham County, Mrs. Comer was the daughter of the late Earman and Ida McCauley Shifflett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Cornelius B. Finch III and Floyd F. Comer. She was a retired cafeteria worker for Page County High School and a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. Surviving are two sons, Timothy Finch of Harrisonburg and Cornelius B. "Connie" Finch IV of Shenandoah; two sisters, Magdalene Comer of Staunton and Gladys Stepp of Elkton; and three grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home, Elkton, or at any other time at either of her sons' homes. Notice of the death of Mrs. Ida Demory Shiflet aged 86 years a former resident of Jefferson County, was received here last week. Mrs. Shiflett, died at her home in Baltimore, Md. on April 28th after a long illness. She is survived by her husband Oscar E. Shiflet and two daughters, Mrs. Amelia H. Taylor and Mrs. Ida I. Adams and a son Robert W. Dermory, children by a former marriage. Funeral services were held at Jenkins Funeral home in Baltimore and burial was in Loudoun Park cemetery in that city. Mrs. Shiflet was a granddaughter of the late Wm F. and Eliza Weirick of Jefferson County.

Mrs. Shifflett’s Funeral Rites Today - Funeral services were held Saturday for Mrs. Ida F. Shifflett who died Wednesday evening at 8:00 o’clock at her home near Shenandoah. The services were conducted from the St. Peters E.U.B. Church where she had been a member since childhood. The services were conducted the Rev. Floyd S. Fulk, assisted by the Rev. P. W. Fisher. Pallbearers were Ralph and Dave Jenkins, T. W. Mundy, Minor Turner, John Foltz, and E. C. Armentrout. A number of friends and relatives attended the funeral form a distance. The floral tribute was both large and beautiful. Mrs. Shifflett is survived by ten children, four sons, Edgar, Monroe, Howard, and Ambrose Shifflett, six daughters, Mrs. Amos (Minnie) Kisling, Mrs. Raymond (Gladys) Stepp, Mrs. Escue (Eula) Garrison, Mrs. Melvin (Magdaline) Comer, Mrs. Clyde (Frances) Thomas, all of near Shenandoah and Miss Ida Belle Shifflett, at home. Fifty-eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, also survive. Mr. Shifflett preceded his wife in death two years ago.

Mrs. Ida J. Gibson of White Hall, widow of Thomas L. Gibson died at 9:45 o'clock yesterday morning at a local hospital. She was a native of Albemarle County, daughter of the late George and Nancy Shiflett, and was 61 years of age. Surviving are one daughter, Miss Estelle Gibson at home, and four sons, James, Stuart, and Cecil, all of White Hall, and Clyde Gibson, of this city. Mrs. Gibson also leaves one sister Belle Shiflett, of Boonesville. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from Mt. Moriah Methodist Church at White Hall and interment will follow in the churchyard.

Ida Mae Neal Shiflet, 91, Gallipolis Ferry, died Wednesday evening at Mercy Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, following a long illness. Born Aug. 31, 1890, Point Pleasant, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Frances Gardner Neal. She was a member of Faith Gospel Church, Gallipolis Ferry. She is preceded in death by her husband, John W Shiflet, who died Aug 18, 1973. Also preceded in death are six children. Surviving are five daughters, Catherine "Katty" Price, Belpre, Ohio, Katie McDermitt, Gallipolis Ferry, Irene Russell, Kanauga, Ohio, Jenny Kerwood, Johnstown, Ohio and Ida Mae Brothers, Pataskala, Ohio; one son, Howard Shiflet, at home; one sister, Margaret Martin, Buffalo; 19 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. MIDDLETOWN -- The funeral for Mrs. Ida Shifflett Trainer, 89, of Middletown and formerly of Elkton will be conducted 2 p. m. today at Elkton Pentecostal Church by the Rev. Ennis Dean. Burial will be in Elk Run cemetery. Mrs. Trainer died Friday evening at Winchester memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 1, 1886 in Greene County and was a daughter of the late William S. and Amanda Sullivan Roberts. On Dec 12, 1903 she married Luther Shifflett, who died Sept. 25, 1929. On July 24, 1935, she married John Trainer, who died Oct. 2, 1959. Surviving are two sons, Robert L. Shifflett of Middletown, with whom she lived for the past two years, and Floyd Shifflett of Richmond; a sister, Mrs. Daisey Wise of Baltimore; a brother, John W. Born Aug. 18, 1888, in Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Sarah Frances Breeden and Joseph Godfrey Seale. She was a member of the Unionville Christian Church. Mrs. Ila Lucile Shiflet, 76-year-old Wheeling resident, died Sunday at Chastains’ Nursing Home, Marceline. She was born Jan. 6, 1910 in Wheeling, a daughter of Fred E. Stevenson and Velma Ann Walkup Stevenson. She married Albert Woods Shiflet June 20, 1927. Mrs. Shiflet was a member of the DAR. Ima Lynn (Howell) Shiflett, daughter of the late Walter and Rosa Pearl Howell, was born April 17, 1921, in Brilliant, Alabama, and departed this life January 7, 2009, at the age of 87. On may 25, 1942, she married L. Thomas Shiflett. Upon his return from military service in World War II, they embarked on careers as educators. Ima taught elementary school until having two sons, Steven and Joseph. Ima was a life-long member of the Church of Christ and most recently attended Walnut Lawn Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; five sisters; and her husband of 56 years. She is survived by her two sons, Steven and wife, Ellen, Overland Park, Kan., and Joseph and wife, Donna, Springfield, Mo.; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Ina Ellen Lasiter, 90, died on Thursday, July 11, 2013, in Stillwater. Her funeral service will be held at the First Christian Church in Stillwater at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, with Chaplain Ron Keeling officiating. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. On April 5, 1923, Ina was born in Goodwell to the late Riley Francis and Almurta (Ross) Shiflett. She attended Burwood and Burros schools in Stephens County, Hilltop school in Seminole County, and graduated from Wewoka High School in the early 1940s. She went on to attend Oklahoma State University before earning her diploma in cosmetology from the Stillwater Beauty College. During her life, Ina worked as a Tupperware and cosmetics saleswoman, a bookkeeper and a seamstress before finding her preferred career path as a hairdresser, a profession in which she worked for 25 years. She married the love of her life, Paul Brakel Lasiter, in Wewoka, on Dec. 24, 1942. They lovingly raised three children together and enjoyed 53 years of marriage before Paul’s death in 1995. Ina had many hobbies, some of which included knitting, needlepoint, crocheting, painting and macramé. She was very gifted and loved to read, especially books by her favorite author, Tommy Hillerman. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Stillwater, and was involved in several societies such as American Mothers Inc., ABWA and the American Hairdressers Association. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant brother, one sister, Marjorie Bingham, two grandsons and two brothers-in-law, Orville Rawlins and Earl Tabor. Ina is survived by her son, Thomas P. She outlived all her brothers and sisters. She is survived by a sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews, and her many friends in Rochelle, where she lived for many years. Mrs. Inez Lee Ryan Shifflett, 85, of Harrisonburg died early Friday morning at Rockingham County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Shifflett, who made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Edward F. Kennedy at 473 W. Market St., was admitted to the hospital Monday. She was born March 23, 1883 near McGaheysville and was a daughter of Charles Henry and Lucy Ellen Michael Ryan. In November 1911, she married Benjamin Clinton Shifflett, who died Dec. 13, 1951. Mrs. Shifflett was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church but in recent years attended the former Mt. Olivet Congregational Christian Church. Surviving, besides her daughter, Mrs. Kennedy are, two daughters, Mrs. Velma Conner of Harrisonburg and Mrs. Thomas Middleton of Richmond; two sisters, Mrs. Alfred G. Cook and Mrs. Ashby G. Shifflett, both of McGaheysville, and a grandson. The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Olivet.

BRIDGEWATER — Inza Gaynell Shiflett, 88, died Saturday morning at Bridgewater Home, where she had lived since June 1979. Mrs. Shiflett was born Sept. 23, 1894, in Rockingham County and was a daughter of the late John C. and Nancy Monger Eddins. She was raised in the Mount Crawford area and moved to the Bridgewater area in 1940. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and worked at Metro Pants 25 years. In December 1918, she married Edward Walter Shiflett, who died in November 1958. Surviving are three children, Winfred C. Shiflett of Colorado Springs, Colo., Ruby Powers of Grottoes and Warren E. Shiflett of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home by the Rev. William F. Atwell Sr. Burial will be in Summit Church of the Brethren cemetery. She was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Augusta County, a daughter of the late William Clarence and Annie (Riley) Shiflet. She graduated from Beverley Manor High School and Marshall's School of Beauty Culture in Norfolk. Mrs. Adkison had been a member of Second Presbyterian Church since March 28, 1943. She received an honorary lifetime membership in the Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. and was very active in the Presbyterian Women, where she also served as treasurer of Circle No. 3 and taught Sunday school in the youth department. Prior to retirement, Mrs. Adkison had been employed by L. Greif Companies (Genesco.) In addition to her husband of 64 years, whom she married Dec. 9, 1942, family members include two brothers, C. Moffet Shiflet and William C. Shiflet Jr., and three sisters, Kathleen S. Gilmer, Marie S. Wood and Pat S. Bosserman. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Marshall Shiflet and Ray Shiflet, and two sisters, Elizabeth S. Runkle and Helen S. Wood. Irene Elizabeth Dean Shifflett, 87, of Grottoes, passed away Monday, June 4, 2012, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Shifflett was born Nov. 10, 1924, in Elkton, and was a daughter of the late Henry and Addie Eppard Dean. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl V. Shifflett; stepfather, Matthew (Mac) Dean; and a sister, Christine Hensley. Irene was a member of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church and served on the Alter Guild and in her youth attended Mount Olivet Christian Church. She retired from American Safety Razor in Verona after 31 years of service. At the age of 61, she ran a five-mile marathon in Richmond and was a volunteer at the Verona Food Bank. After retirement, she traveled with her daughter, Faye, throughout the United States and enjoyed visiting her family, friends, sewing, gardening and flowers. Survivors include her children, Carolyn Shifflett Griffis, Richmond, Wayne A. Shifflett, Truman V. Shifflett (Monika), and Faye Shifflett; brothers, Elwood Dean and Earl Dean; a sister, Margaret Shifflett; six grandchildren, Greg (Kelli), Donna (Marty), Christy (Steve), Pam, Heidi, Serena (Chris); 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Shifflett, who retired form the Navy after 26 years of service, was a member of the Upper Room Church in Elkton and the Harrisonburg Moose Lodge. On June 20, 1927, he married Lona A. Shifflett, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Marvin Wilson Shifflett of Sandston; three half sisters, Lillian Haney, Lottie Lawson, and Helen Davis, all of Elkton; a half brother, Miller Baugher of Elkton; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the Upper Room Church by the Rev. Johnny Hensley. Burial will be in Elk Run Cemetery at Elkton. Irvin Delmar Shifflett, 66, a well known resident of Harrisonburg and a former resident of the Elkton, Swift Run, and McGaheysville communities, died unexpectedly at noon, Friday, while working in the garden of his home, at 65 Ott Street. Mr. Shifflett was apparently in his usual health and had worked Thursday night at the Duplant Corporation at Grottoes where he was employed as a shuttle polisher. He had held this position for the past 15 years. He had returned home form work and had eaten his breakfast and had gone into his garden to do a little work before retiring. His unexpected death came as a shock to his family and to his host of friends and acquaintances throughout the city and county. Death was apparently due to a heart attack. A son of the later Edward Shifflett and Annie Maiden Shifflett, he was born on Feb. 23, 1889 in the Swift Run community and spent practically his entire life in this and the McGaheysville and Elkton communities, until 15 years ago when he moved to Harrisonburg. On May 21, 1913 he married Miss Stella Rion, who survives him. Besides his wife, he is survived by five children, Ellsworth D. Shifflett, Joseph A. Shifflett, and Mrs. Guy (Charlotte) Taylor, all of Harrisonburg; Mrs. Paul (Mildred) Propst, of Rochelle, Ill.; and Mrs. Johnnie (Jewel) Campbell, of Strasburg. He also leaves 18 grandchildren, one brother, Ashby Shifflett, of McGaheysville; and two half-sisters, Mrs. Lester Leap, of McGaheysville; and Mrs. Clint Odom, of Johnson City, Tenn. A daughter, Vernelle, and two half-brothers, Joseph Lam and Lester Lam, preceded him in death. Mr. Shifflett possessed a kind and friendly personality and was admired by all who knew him. He was a member of the Mt. Zion EUB Church.

Irvin Forrest "Peanut" Shifflett, 97, of Rocky Bar, died Thursday, April 26, 2007, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Shifflett was born Sept. 21, 1909, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Cornelius and Bessie Shifflett. He is also preceded in death by an infant daughter and sisters, Eva Gooden, Mary Shifflett and Mildred Whitesell, brothers, Maynard and Russell Shifflett and one grandson, Stephen Miller. He worked for Norfolk and Western Railroad, Wayne Manufacturing Company and Duplan Manufacturing Company in Grottoes and he retired from farming. He also served as senior warden at St. Stephen the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Rocky Bar. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping, gardening and playing his banjo in his earlier years. On July 13, 1933, he married Lydia Rosson Shifflett and she survives him. Also surviving are three daughters, Bernice S. Meadows and husband, Russell, of Penn Laird, Georgia S. Marshall and husband, Charles, of Rocky Bar, and Shirley S. Miller and husband, Richard, of Elkton; one son, Forrest Shifflett and wife, Cheryl, of New Hope; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Beulah Shifflett of Delmar, Del., and Zena Shifflett of Rocky Bar; numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members, Louis and Frances Marshall, J.P. and Hazel Roach and their families. Irvin Marshall Shifflett, 66, of Elkton, died Saturday afternoon at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, where he had been a patient since August 29th. Mr. Shifflett was born December 9, 1927, in Rockingham County near Elkton and was the son of Zean W. Shifflett of Elkton and the late Nellie Meadows. He was a sheet metal worker for Snyders Plumbing & Heating for over 30 years before retiring. He attended the Elkton Pentecostal Church and was a member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. On April 12, 1952, he married the former Loretta Webb who survives. Also surviving are a son, Larry W. Shifflett of Elkton; three brothers, Bobby A., Harvey Lewis, and Alva Lee Shifflett, all of Elkton; three grandchildren, Amber, Aaron and Andrew Shifflett, all of Harrisonburg. Isaac Wilbur Shifflett, 74, of McGaheysville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 6, 2010, at his home with his family by his side. Mr. Shifflett was born Feb. 18, 1936, in Rockingham County to the late George Wilbur and Irene Genevieve Shifflett. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Shifflett, and a sister, Norma Puffenbarger. Isaac was a member and attended Bible Study Ministries. In 2001, he retired from McQuay after 33 years of service. He enjoyed working on cars, wood working, playing his Martin guitar, but most of all spending time with his family, including their Amazon parrot. Pallbearers will be Ivan’s grandsons, Kyle Shifflet, Kevin Shifflet, Eric Armstrong, J. R. Shifflet, Scott Hanson, Gerad Armstrong, G. W. Hanson and Cody Shifflet. Ivan Carroll "Butch" Shifflett Jr., 60, of Grottoes, passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Shifflett was born Dec. 9, 1949, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of the late Ivan Carroll "Dick" Shifflett Sr. and Dorothy Marie Merica Shifflett. Ivan served in the U.S. Army for over 13 years and was a member of the VFW Post 632 in Harrisonburg, where he served as Chaplain and drove the D.A.V. van to the veterans hospitals for a number of years. He was employed at J.B. Hunt before becoming disabled. He enjoyed family trips to Virginia Beach and Tennessee and hunting and fishing. On Oct. 5, 1968, he married Linda Faye (Kite) Shifflett, who survives. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Melissa Breeden, and companion, Steve, of Elkton; a son, Brandon W. Shifflett of Grottoes; a brother, Gary Wayne Shifflett of Bluemont; three sisters, Paula Faye Purdham, Brenda Kay Tappy and Beverly Jo Emerick, all of Shenandoah; five grandchildren, Katelyn Breeden, Dakota Breeden, William Comer, Phillip (Austin) Comer and McKenzie Shifflett; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Wesley Dale Shifflett. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton. Pastor Mike Reynolds and the Rev. Gerald Meeks will conduct the service. Burial will follow at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville. Ivan Carroll “Dick” Shifflett Sr., 79, of Shenandoah, passed away Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Shifflett was born Oct. 3, 1929, in Charlottesville, and was the son of the late Richard Lee and Qunnie Mowbray Shifflett. Mr. Shifflett served our country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the Rion Bowman VFW Post 632 in Harrisonburg, where he drove the D.A.V. van to V.A. hospitals for a number of years. He attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Shenandoah and was a former member of the Elkton Eagles. He retired from Goods Transfer Trucking after more than 30 years of service. On Feb. 23, 1949, he married Dorothy Merica Shifflett, who preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 2004. He is survived by two sons, Ivan C. “Butch” Shifflett Jr. of Grottoes and Gary Wayne Shifflett of Bluemont; three daughters, Paula Faye Purdham, Brenda Kay Tappy and Beverly Jo Emerick, all of Shenandoah; three brothers, Leonard N. Shifflett of Houston, Texas, Alvin P. Shifflett of Elkton, Leon S. Shifflett of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sisters, Elizabeth M. Meadows of Elkton, Bonnie S. Tracy of Harrisonburg; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Wilson, Richard and Roger Shifflett; and a grandson, Dale Shifflett. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton with Pastor Mike Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Elkton. Ivory Preston Shifflett Jr., 80, of Duncan, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 in Duncan. Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Duncan Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Dale Howry, under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home. Ivory was born May 19, 1931 in Willows, Calif., the son of Ivory Preston and Nora Bloomer Shifflett Sr. He was a cowboy and served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Shirley Lavelle Hinkle Dec. 5, 1955, in Wichita Falls, Texas. He farmed and ranched in Watonga, before moving to Wyoming in 1971. He was foreman for several ranches there before moving to Duncan in 1996. He worked for J.W. Hines and was employed by Fleetwood Farms at the time of his death. He was a member of the V.F.W. Ivory is survived by his wife Shirley, of the home; two sons, Tony Preston Shifflett and wife DeCee, of Laramie, Wy., and Dusty Lee Shifflett and wife Susie, of Duboise, Id.; one daughter, Cheryl Schwartzkopf of Douglas, Wy.; two brothers, Jack Shifflett and wife Arthena, and Gerald Shifflett and wife Lolly, all of Oakwood; two sisters, Wanda England, of Arkansas City, Kan., and Ruby Thomas of Southerland, Ore.; and eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister. Pall bearers will be Monte Shifflett, Mark Grote, Dusty Shifflett, Tony Shifflett, Justin Schwartzkopf and Jeff Whaley. Honorary Bearers will be Chad Lehew, Shawn Frey, B. Joe Whitney, Aaron Bratcher, J.W. Hines, Tony Fleetwood, Phil Fleetwood and Elmer Skeen.
