AUBREY L. MOWBRAY
Aubrey Lee Mowbray, 81, Route 4, Elkton, died April 6, 1996, at his home. He had been in failing health for the past several months. Mr. Mowbray was born Jan. 16, 1915, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Andrew C. and Stella Trainer Mowbray. He attended the Episcopal Church and had been employed at DuPont and Merck before becoming disabled. Surviving are his wife, Beulah Campbell Mowbray; two sons, George A. Mowbray, Glen Allen and Russell S. Smith, Elkton; five daughters, Betty Z. Hopkins, Greenville, S.C., Audrey E. Jones Albuquerque, N.M., M. Gwendolyn Besendorfee, Dillwyn and Shirley R. Hammer and Joyce C. McDonaldson, both of Elkton, three sisters Ruth McDonald, Covington, Eva Raynes, Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community, Harrisonburg and Edith Shifflett, Dayton; 25 grandchildren; and a number of Great and great-great-grandchildren. The Rev. Stuart C. Wood will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Elkton Chapel of the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elk Run Cemetery, Elkton. The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made tot he Elkton Rescue Squad.

Mrs. Bernice Elizabeth Mowbray, 74, of Grottoes, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, Va. Mrs. Mowbray was born in Harrisonburg, Va. on Oct. 16, 1932, and was a daughter of the late Owen Marshall and Margaret Elizabeth (Koogler) Riggleman Fries. She worked as a Line Inspector at Marshalls in Bridgewater, retiring with 16 years of service and had worked at Sancar of Harrisonburg for 20 years. She was a member of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Port Republic, Va. She was united in marriage Oct. 25, 1947, to Oliver Mowbray of Port Republic, who survives. Surviving in addition to her husband, are three daughters and their husbands, Rose Good and Larry of Harrisonburg, Dianne Guthrie and Gary, Gloria Lucas and Daniel, all of Grottoes; two sons and their wives, Oliver Mowbray Jr. and Bonnie, William Mowbray and Linda, all of Grottoes; two sisters, Phyllis Hartman of Conroe, Texas, Linda Helmick of North Carolina; one brother, Jack Fries of Harrisonburg. Nine grandchildren also survive, Christopher Mowbray, Melinda Smith, Anthony Mowbray, Jason Good, Matthew Good, Nathan Mowbray, Adrenna Lucas, Megan Lucas, Grace Guthrie, and six great-grandchildren. A special caregiver, Veronica Kisamore of Hawaii. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Riggleman. A funeral service will be conducted at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, Port Republic, Va. at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, with the Rev. Stuart Wood officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at the Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes from 7-8 p.m.

Funeral services for Charles Wilson "Charlie" Mowbray, 88, of Elkton, will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Upper Room Church near Elkton. The Rev. Johnny Hensley will conduct the service. Burial will follow in the Elk Run Cemetery. Mr. Mowbray died April 7, 2005, at his home. Mr. Mowbray was born Sept. 10, 1916, at Bear Lithia near Elkton, and was the son of the late Jacob G. "Jake" Mowbray and Lillie Williams Mowbray. He served in the United States Army during World War II and worked for Asplundh Tree Company for a number of years. He worked at Merck & Co. for 33 years, retiring in 1979. After retiring he continued to work for himself, trimming trees until he was 86 years old. He was a member of the Upper Room Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing. On April 25, 1936, he married Pearl Mowbray, who survives. Also surviving are five sons, Wilson "Leroy" Mowbray and wife, Jeanette, Donald B. Mowbray, Lenard G. Mowbray and wife, Sharon, Jerry W. Mowbray, Keith E. Mowbray and wife, Judy, all of Elkton; a sister, Mattie Mowbray, Elkton; 10 grandchildren, Bobby Breeden, Brandy D. Webb, Brenda A. Leazenby and husband, Brian, Wilson R. Lam, Manuel L. Lam and wife, Tina, Diana F. McAlister and husband, Danny, Timothy B. B. Mowbray and wife, Melinda, Angela L. Mowbray-Parker and husband, John, Beth A. Mowbray and fiancé, Chuck, Hannah V. Mowbray; seven great-grandchildren, Joshua L. Lam, Samantha M. Lam, Matthew S. Mowbray, Chandra M. Lucas, Tyler B. Mowbray, Nicoya J. Mowbray-Parker, Kellie N. Mowbray; one great-great-grandchild, Brooke L. Mowbray. Mr. Mowbray was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie E. Lam, and a daughter-in-law, Delores Mowbray, and several brothers and sisters. Mr. Mowbray will be taken to the Upper Room Church, where the family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. today (Saturday). Friends may also call at the Mowbray home at any time. Charlotte Jean Mowbray, 64, of Red Brush Road in Elkton, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, in the emergency room at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Mowbray was born Feb. 15, 1941, in Shenandoah, and was the daughter of the late Howard T. and Beulah Short Shifflett. She was a lifetime resident of this area and was a member of the Lily of the Valley Church and Shenandoah Crafters. She was a cook at Elkton Middle School for 22 years and was a part-time cook at Elkton and McGaheysville Elementary schools. She was also employed with Effie Dorrough at Floral Expression in Shenandoah. On March 18, 1958, she married Ralph J. Mowbray, who survives. She is also survived by two sons, Chet Mowbray of Elkton and Todd Mowbray of Shenandoah; a brother, Clemeth Shifflett of Shenandoah; a grandson raised in her home, Erek Mowbray; and two step-granddaughters. The Rev. L. J. Campbell will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. today at the Lily of the Valley Church. Burial will follow at Elk Run Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Elkton Rescue Squad, P.O. Christopher Lee Mowbray, 45, of Grottoes, passed away Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, at his home. Chris was born in Harrisonburg on June 17, 1971, and was a son of Linda Sue (Swadley) and William Lee Mowbray of Grottoes. He worked for Mountain Valley Home Comfort in New Market. He enjoyed working with his hands drawing, woodworking, carving and loved helping his dad on the farm when able. In addition to his parents, Chris is survived by two sons, Jacob Mowbray and companion, Amanda Arey, of Grottoes, and Austin Mowbray of Mount Solon; a brother, Anthony Lee Mowbray of Grottoes; grandson, Brent Arey; and niece, Jodie Crider. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville. ELKTON- Mrs. Daisy Mae Mowbray, 72, of Elkton, died Tuesday morning at Rockingham Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient a week. She had been in failing health several years. Mrs. Mowbray was born May 17, 1901 in Elkton and was a daughter of the late Alexander and Clay Lawson Crawford. She had lived in Bentonville but had made her home with Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Mowbray of Elkton the past month. Mrs. Mowbray belonged to the Bentonville Baptist Church. Her husband, Osby W. Mowbray, survives. He is living with a niece, Mrs. Carl Hohnke, of Dayton. Also surviving are two brothers, Lewis Crawford of Bentonville, and Alec Crawford of Front Royal. The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at the Lindsay Harrisonburg Funeral Home by the Rev. Bob Martin. Burial will be in Elk Run Cemetery at Elkton.

Daniel F. Mowbray, retired farmer, died at 8 o'clock last night at his home at Free Union, following an illness of several weeks. He was a native of Culpeper County, son of the late Lewis and Sarah Crawford Mowbray, and was 87 years of age. He married Miss Polly Herring, who died some years ago. Surviving are two daughters, Miss Flora Mowbray, of this city, and Mrs. Lelia Martin, of Martinsville, and four sons, R.T. and G.E. Mowbray, of Richmond; W.M. Mowbray of Free Union, and W.W. Mowbray, of Portsmouth. There are 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Mowbray also leaves one brother, Robert Mowbray, and two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Munger and Mrs. Willie Shifflett, all of Rockingham County. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from Wesley Chapel, near Free Union, and interment will follow in the churchyard.

Dennis Franklin Mowbray Jr. passed away Thursday Nov. 1, 2001 at the Cedars Nursing Home. Born Aug. 4, 1921 son of Dennis F. Mowbray Sr. and Flora Mowbray. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Elsie M. Mowbray. He is survived by sister, Dorothy M. Williford; brother, Vernon R. Mowbray; a neice, Carolyn Walker of Advance, N.C.; nephew, Charles pace, Kirkland, Wash.; sister-in-law, Mary Lee Morris and a number of cousins. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Virginia Student Aid Foundation and a long-time loyal football fan. He was associated with D.F. Mowbray & Sons, painting contractor for many years in Charlottesville. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2001 at Monticello Memorial Park. Dennis Lee "Buster" Mowbray, age 68, died on Friday, April 16, 2004, at his residence in Elkton. Mr. Mowbray was born Jan. 30, 1936, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of the late Percy Mowbray and Grace (Crawford) Meadows of Elkton. He retired from Packaging Corporation of America. A lot of his enjoyment included his love of bluegrass music and spending time with his horses. He was a great husband, father and grandfather. Other than his mother, survivors include his wife of 42 years, Vivian Mowbray; two sons, Derrick Mowbray of Elkton and Greg Mowbray of Grottoes; one daughter, Cassandra Deane of Grottoes; two brothers, Bucky Mowbray of Alexandria and Gary Mowbray of Broadway; one sister, Wanda Baker of Mount Crawford; eight grandchildren and two foster grandchildren. Two brothers, Robert "Bobby" Mowbray and Kermit "Kermy" Mowbray, preceded Mr. Mowbray in death. A funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Alvin Dovel and Rev. Derrick Mowbray, 42, of Elkton, died April 3, 2005, in a truck accident in Harrisonburg. Mr. Mowbray was born Jan. 13, 1963, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of Vivian Roach Mowbray of Elkton and the late Dennis Lee "Buster" Mowbray. He was a 1981 graduate of Spotswood High School and served three years in the United States Army. Mr. Mowbray was a truck driver for Appalachian Trucking in Edinburg for the past four years. Derrick’s main hobby was bluegrass music. His father and mother started him and his brother playing bluegrass at a very young age. He played Banjo in the Band, "Dixie Sunrise" for the past year. He had a God given talent for music and used it to benefit many. He also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle when he wasn’t playing music. Derrick was known by many and loved by all. The memories of his banjo playing will lie forever as will the joy he brought to his family. Besides his mother, he is survived by a son, Shane Jennings, Richmond; a daughter, Jessica Breeden, Grottoes; a brother, Greg Mowbray and wife, Shannon, Grottoes; a sister, Cassandra Deane and husband, Joseph, Grottoes; a maternal grandmother, Bessie Roach, Elkton. Donnie Preston “Buck” Mowbray Jr., 28, formerly of Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville. He was born July 2, 1979, in Harrisonburg, Va., the son of Donnie P. and Linda Wilburn Mowbray. Together with Curtis Benson, he was a partner in 181.FM, a division of NetRadio Partners, LLC, of Waynesboro. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Leroy Wilburn, and his paternal grandparents, Odell and Frances Mowbray. In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Amanda Mowbray; three sisters and their husbands, Sherri and Jorge Quiroga of Penn Laird, and Diana and Marty Smith and Melissa and Mike Smith, all of Grottoes; a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many friends. Donnie Preston Mowbray Sr., 70, of Grottoes, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019 at his home. Mr. Mowbray was born Feb. 2, 1949, in Harrisonburg and was a son of the late Odell Preston and Frances Morris Mowbray. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Mae Mowbray, who passed away on April 26, 2013, as well as a son, Donnie Preston Mowbray Jr., who passed away on May 28, 2008. He is survived by three daughters, Diana Sacra and husband, Scott, Melissa Smith and husband, Michael, both of Grottoes, and Sherri Quiroga and Damien Gutierrez of Harrisonburg; two brothers, Danny Mowbray of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Gary Mowbray and wife, Ellen, of Elkton; seven grandchildren, Robert Smith, Nikki King, McKayla Smith, Megan Smith, Kelli Kile, Caleb Quiroga and Colton Quiroga; and two great-granddaughters, Anna Smith and Avery Smith. Dorothy Mowbray Willowford, 88, of Charlottesville, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Cedars Nursing Home. She was born Oct. 17, 1913, in Albemarle County, the daughter of the late Dennis F. Mowbray Sr. and Flora Lee Mowbray. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dennis F. Mowbray Jr. and Nov. 1, 2001. Dorothy worked in the family business, D.F. Mowbray and Sons and at Keller and George. She is survived by one brother, Vernon Randolph Mowbray; a son, Charles L. Pace and wife, Teruko, of Kirkland, Wash.; daughter, Carolyn Walker and husband, Douglas, of Advance, N.C.; four grandsons, Mark Pace, Scott, Wes, and Brian Walker, and their wives; and five great-grandchildren. Many thanks to the staff of Martha Jefferson Hospital, The Caldwell Center, and the staff and friends at the Cedars Nursing Home. Durwood Austin Mowbray, 71, of Lake Monticello, passed away Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at a local nursing home in Charlottesville. Born March 19, 1934, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Elmer P. Mowbray Sr. and Mabel Lee Mowbray. Durwood was retired after 32 years with the C&O Chessie CSX Transportation Railroads. He was a member of the Crozet Moose Lodge and American Legion Post # 0074. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War as a decorated 1st Sergeant Specialist. Durwood enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife, Dixie Fitzgerald Mowbray; and brother, Elmer P. Mowbray Jr.; a son, Robert Austin Mowbray of New York City; two daughters, Sandra M. Patterson and her husband, Greg, of Lake Monticello, Kelly M. Landes and her husband, Keith, of Lake Monticello; four grandchildren, Ashley Lounsbury, Chase Lounsbury, Stacey Lounsbury and Brooke Landes; one great-granddaughter Allyson Lounsbury; a sister-in-law, Gail Staton and her husband, Shelton Staton, of Lake Monticello; one nephew, William Staton and his wife, Diane; two nieces, Patricia Burr and her husband Scott and Linda Beverly; many cousins, great -nieces and nephews; and special friends, Billy Via and his wife, Viola. A graveside service will be held at Holly Memorial Gardens 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, with the Rev Sidney Craig officiating. Edith Mowbray Shifflett, 90, died Sept. 1, 2001, at Avante of Harrisonburg, where she had been a patient since February. Mrs. Shifflett was born on June 8, 1911, in the Rocky Bar area of Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Andrew Calvin and Stella Ray Trainor Mowbray. She was a homemaker and had also been employed in the Pleasant Valley Elementary School cafeteria for many years. She was a member of the Mount Sinai United Methodist Church. On Sept. 6, 1927, she was married to Everett R. Shifflett, who preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1982. Surviving are three sons, Capt. Leonard R. Shifflette USMC (Ret.), Harrisonburg, Harvey E. Shifflett, Greeneville, Tenn., and Andrew L. Shifflett, Waynesboro; three daughters, Betty S. Showalter, Mount Clinton, Marilee S. Layman, Dayton and Samuella S. Fries, Harrisonburg; 13 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy S. Riggleman. The Rev. Neil Hough will conduct a funeral service Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Mount Sinai United Methodist Church. Elizabeth Jane Sweet Mowbray went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at her home in Grottoes. Mrs. Mowbray was born on Oct. 17, 1923, in Bacova (Bath County), and was a daughter of the late William and Una Hutchens Sweet. She graduated from Weyers Cave High School and attended nurses training at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and was a member of Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah's Witnesses in McGaheysville. She was a loving mother and homemaker who devoted her life to caring for others. Her family was her life. On June 20, 1946, she married Harold Lewis Mowbray who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a great grandson, Colton James Mowbray. Elmer Pierce "Pete" Mowbray Jr., 70, of Lake Monticello, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at a local nursing home in Fork Union. Born November 7, 1936, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Elmer P. Mowbray Sr. and Mabel Lee Mowbray. "Pete" was retired after 20 years with the C & 0 Chessie CSX Transportation Railroads. He served his country in the United State Marine Corp as a Private 1st Class. "Pete" enjoyed his boat and fishing, traveling to the bay with his relatives and taking short trips around Virginia. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Dixie Mowbray of Lake Monticello; a nephew, Robert Austin Mowbray of New York; two nieces, Sandra M. Patterson and her husband, Greg, of Lake Monticello, and Kelly M. Landes and her husband, Keith, of Lake Monticello; two great -nephews, Chase Lounsbury and Kyle Landes; and three great-nieces, Ashley Lounsbury, Stacey Lounsbury and Brooke Landes; a great -great-niece, Allyson Lounsbury; many cousins and friends. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2006, at Holly Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Sidney Craig officiating. Eva Pearl Mowbray, 88, of Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005, at Avante in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Mowbray was born Dec. 9, 1916, in Elkton, and was the daughter of the late Cullas and Susan Shifflett. She was a homemaker and a member of the Ray of Hope Church. On Jan. 3, 1934, she married Douglas Henry Mowbray; he preceded her in death Aug. 28, 1980. Surviving are two daughters, Maxine Donovan of Harrisonburg and Flossie Walters of Keezletown; four sons, Robert L., Douglas M. and Kenneth W. Mowbray, all of Harrisonburg, and Grover M. Mowbray of Bridgewater; a sister, Tilda Morris of Harrisonburg; four brothers, Freddie Shifflett of Port Republic, Elmer Shifflett of McGaheysville, Wilbert Shifflett of Elkton and Everette Shifflett of Stanardsville; 15 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Frances Elizabeth Mowbray, 75, of Harrisonburg, died on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, at Harrisonburg Health & Rehab Center. She was born Feb. 4, 1928, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Cecil J. and Margaret Shifflett Morris. Frances was a lifetime resident of this area and grew up attending the St. Stephen & The Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. She had worked at Duplan, Alliance Manufacturing, and for a number of years she was in housekeeping at Liberty House Nursing Home. After her retirement, she managed the Coin Laundry on South Main Street and was active in the VFW Post No. 632 Ladies Auxiliary. She loved to work in her yard, shop, and spent many hours remodeling her home and fixing up her house. On Dec. 22, 1945, she married Odell Preston Mowbray, who preceded her in death on Jan. 20, 1982. Her brother, Cecil Emory Morris, also preceded her. Surviving are three sons, Danny L. Mowbray of Waynesboro, Gary W. Mowbray and wife, Ellen, of Elkton, and Donnie P. Mowbray and wife, Linda, of Penn Laird; one brother, Rudolph J. Morris of De Land, Fla.; three sisters, Agnes Heatwole and Edith Blose, both of Harrisonburg, and Charlotte Pechinino of Kuna, Idaho; seven grandchildren, Diana Smith and husband, Marty, Melissa Smith and husband, Mike, Sherri Kile and husband, Gerald, Anthony S. Herbert Lee Mowbray, 65, a resident of 10129 McGaheysville Road in McGaheysville, died at 4:10 Tuesday morning, November 30, 1999 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He had not been well for the past 8 months. A son of Pearl Shifflett Mowbray and the late Douglas Mowbray, he was born on Feb. 28, 1934 in Rockingham County where he attended school. Mr. Mowbray lived most of his life in McGaheysville and was a member of the Elkton Church of God. He was custodian for Massanutten Vo-Tech, and retired in 1991. On Oct. 25, 1957, he married Edna Kyger who survives him. Besides his wife and his mother of Harrisonburg; he is survived by two sisters, Maxine Donovan of Singers Glen; and Flossie Walters of Keezletown; five brothers, Nelson Mowbray of Hinton; Grover Mowbray of Bridgewater; and Robert, Douglas, and Kenneth Mowbray, all of Harrisonburg; and a number of nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Jessica Kyger. Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Chapel of the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Samuel Sponaugle officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. The body of James C. Mowbray, 83, object of an eight-day search, was found Saturday by a mushroom hunter in a field off Rt. 43, west of Hagerstown. Mowbray had been missing since Good Friday. Dr. Edwards Ditto ?___?, county medical examiner, said Mowbray had been dead since about Saturday, April 17, the day after he disappeared. Ditto said death was caused by exposure Mowbray’s body was clad only in long underwear. The field where he was found is behind the home of Willard Custer in the Cedar Lawn area. Jesse N. Feidt of 10 S. Artizan St., Williamsport, who found the body, told sheriff’s dept he was hunting mushrooms in the field. He happened to notice a piece of red material on a small knoll and when he investigated he found the body. Feidt then notified Custer who called the sheriff’s department. Deputies said Mowbray’s jacket was found fastened to a wire fence in the field. His trousers were found a short distance away, along with his hat. Neither his shoes nor his glasses were found. Dr. Ditto said without his thick glasses Mowbray was practically helpless. The field in which Mowbray was found is about five to six miles cross-country west of his home and a distance of about one mile from the Hopewell Rd. The body was removed to Rest Haven Funeral Chapel. Mr. Mowbray had been employed by the Western Maryland Railway, M. P. Moller Co., Hotel Alexander, and Central Chemical Co. He attended the Church of God at Rosehill Ave. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lula Anna (Shifflett) Mowbray, and the following children: James Alden Mowbray, at home, Mrs. Louise Anna Mitchell, Williamsport, Homar C. Mowbray of Hagerstown, Mrs. Reba Kathleen Lamm, of Colorado, John W. Mowbray of Hagerstown, Mrs. Mary Virginia Myers, Hagerstown; brother, John Howard Mowbray, of Baltimore; sisters, Mrs. Virginia Shifflett, Delaware, Mrs. Alice Shifflett, Elkon, W. Va.; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The body was removed to the Rest Haven Funeral Chapel where friends may call until Tuesday at noon. The body will be taken to the Church of God, Rosehill Ave., to lie in state one hour prior to the services which will be at 2 pm. Tuesday, with the Rev. Bruce McCane Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 7 to 9 tonight.

Mattie Frances Mowbray, 89, of Elkton, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she had lived for three weeks. Mrs. Mowbray was born Sept. 14, 1918, in Rockingham County near Elkton, and was the daughter of the late Jacob G. and Lilly Frances Williams Mowbray. She attended Fox Mountain School near Elkton and was a faithful member of the Elkton Pentecostal Church, teaching Sunday school for many years. She was a bookkeeper for Mowbray Excavating in Elkton for over 20 years. She enjoyed sewing and making quilts and was known for the beautiful hats she wore. On April 14, 1934, she married Owlen Whitfield Mowbray, who preceded her in death June 27, 2001. They were married 67 years. Survivors include two sons, Everett Mowbray and Ralph Mowbray, both of Elkton; three grandsons and one great-grandson. The Revs. Travis Hensley and Ray Halverson will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Elkton Pentecostal Church. Burial will follow at Elk Run Cemetery. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton. Nora Arlene Mowbray, 94, of Harrisonburg, passed away June 5, 2020. A daughter of the late Thomas Fletcher and Lida Mae Shifflett Craun, she was born in Augusta County on Aug. 11, 1925. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Mowbray in 2009; three brothers, Bennie, Raymond and Odie Craun; and three sisters, Mabel Moyers, Mary Zigler and Ethel Craun. Mrs. Mowbray was previously employed with Rockingham Memorial Hospital and attended Victory Fellowship Church in Dayton. Surviving are her caregivers and family, Jenny Woods, Fay Dove, Nancy Myers, and Betty Sites and husband, James, and twin sister, Nellie Bell. The graveside service will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2020, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville with Pastor Sonny Henkel officiating. Odessa C. Mowbray, 75, passed away Friday, July 26, 2002, at a Charlottesville hospital. She was born Dec. 2, 1926, in Greene County, a daughter of the late Martin and Givie Collier. Her husband was the late Frank W. Mowbray. She is survived by four daughters, Sandra Polawski and her husband, Jeff, of Wexford, Pa., Peggy Mowbray and Shawn Mooney, Sue Sherrill, and Gayle Pardue and her husband, David, all of Charlottesville; seven grandchildren, Kari Collier of Las Vegas, Jessica Knight of Raleigh, N.C., Whitney Polawski of Wexford, Pa., Clayman and Kelsie Mooney, and Isabelle Pardue, all of Charlottesville, Joshua Rhodes of Broadway; and two step-grandchildren, Chessie and Damien Pardue of Charlottesville. Mrs. Mowbray spent her youth on a farm, where she acquired her lifelong love of animals and all the wonders of nature. She loved children and attended to a number of children, who remember her fondly. She loved music, many remember her musical talents when she was a young woman. She was a spirited and independent woman. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening and Monday evening at the Ryan Funeral Home in Quinque. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

Oliver “Big O” Burgess Mowbray Jr., 63, of Grottoes, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg. Big O was born May 30, 1950, in Rockingham County, Va., and was the son of Oliver Mowbray Sr. and the late Bernice (Riggleman) Mowbray. He was the owner of Blue Ridge Concreters and attended Grace Memorial Church in Lynnwood. On Jan. 13, 1973, he was united in marriage to Bonnie J. (Shoemaker) Mowbray, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Melinda Anne Smith (Jason) of Mount Solon; a son, Nathan Burgess of Grottoes; siblings, William Lee Mowbray (Linda) of Grottoes, Rose Good (Larry) of Harrisonburg, Dianne Guthrie (Gary) of Grottoes and Gloria Lucas (Danny) of Grottoes; and four grandchildren, Jason “JJ” Smith Jr., Andrew Smith, Morgan Smith and Daylen Jace Mowbray. Onnie J. Mowbray, 72, of Elkton, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at his home. Mr. Mowbray was born Feb. 6, 1930, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Jacob G. and Lilly F. Williams Mowbray. He attended the Elkton Presbyterian Church and was employed by Mowbray Excavating. Survivors include a companion of 47 years, Betty Shifflett of Elkton; a foster child, Jonathan Wayne Knight of Elkton; a brother, Charlie Mowbray of Elkton; and two sisters, Mattie Mowbray and Eula Breeden, both of Elkton. DAYTON - Osby W. Mowbray, 76, of Rt. 2, Dayton, died of an apparent heart attack Saturday night at the home of his sister, Mrs. Blanche Shifflett, where he had been living a year. He was stricken at home and was dead on arrival at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Mowbray was born Feb. 25, 1887 at Elkton and was a son of the late Robert and Lydia Morris Mowbray. He had farmed at Bentonville and had worked for Stauffer Chemical Co. 18 years. He was a member of the Bentonville Baptist Church. On Oct. 16, 1920, he married the former Daisy Mae Crawford, who died Aug. 21,1973. Surviving besides Mrs. Shifflett, is another sister, Mrs. Quinnie Shifflett of Elkton, and four brothers, Lusby Mowbray of Grottoes, Percy Mowbray of Baltimore, Md., Douglas Mowbray of Harrisonburg and Prentiss Mowbray of Elkton. The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lindsay Harrisonburg Funeral Home by the Rev. Bob Martin and the Rev. Charles P. Anderson. Burial will be in the Elk Run Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Owlen Whitfield Mowbray, 87, of Elkton, died on Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for one day. Mr. Mowbray was born March 18, 1914, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late David and Elsie Virginia Gooden Mowbray. He was a lifetime resident of this area and a member of the Elkton Pentecostal Church. He worked for more than 35 years at Merck and Co. in Elkton as a mechanic and also was a self-employed farmer and operated an excavation company with his sons. He is survived by his wife, Mattie Frances Mowbray; two sons, Everett Mowbray and Ralph Mowbray, both of Elkton; one sister, Pearl Mowbray, of Elkton; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Elkton Pentecostal Church, with the Rev. Kenzy Reed officiating. Burial will be in Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton. Mowbray Infant Dies At Hospital
Peal June Mowbray, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Henry Mowbray, of Keezletown, died at 4:20 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Rockingham memorial Hospital. The infant child, who was born last Saturday, is survived by her father, an employee of Swift and Company; and her mother, the former Miss Eve Shifflett; and seven brothers and sisters, namely, Herbert, Robert, Maxine, Nelson, Douglas, Grover, and Flossie Mowbray, all of Keezletown. She also leaves her grandfather, Robert L. Mowbray, of Elkton; and her grandmother, Mrs. Susan Shifflett, of Elkton Route 2. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at ten o'clock from the graveside in the Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton. The Rev. John Morris will conduct the services. The body now rests at the Lindsey Funeral Home where it will remain until nine-fifteen Thursday morning.

Ralph Junie Mowbray, 73, of Elkton, passed away Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Mr. Mowbray was born Oct. 17, 1939, in Rockingham County near Elkton to the late Owlen Whitfield and Mattie Frances Mowbray. Ralph was a lifetime resident of the area and attended Lily of the Valley Church in Shenandoah. In his earlier years, along with his dad and his brother, they started Mowbray’s Excavating. He retired from Nielsen Construction in Harrisonburg as a masonry foreman. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Avis O. Comer VFW Post 8613 in Shenandoah and AMVETS Post 7 in Harrisonburg. He enjoyed fishing, golf, shooting pool, hunting and playing cards at the VFW with his friends. On March 18, 1958, he married Charlotte Jean Shifflett Mowbray, who preceded him in death Dec. 23, 2005. Survivors include his sons, Chet Mowbray and wife, Karen, of Elkton and Todd Mowbray and wife, Melissa, of Shenandoah; brother, Everett Mowbray and wife, Shirley, of Elkton; grandson, raised in the home, Erek Mowbray and fiancée, Ashley, of Elkton; stepgrandchildren, Amanda Taylor and Samantha Shenk; stepgreat-grandchildren, Kyleigh Grace Myers and Ryan Wesley Taylor; and nephew, Neil Mowbray of Elkton. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Michael Mowbray. Robert Lee Mowbray, 74, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at Avante in Harrisonburg. He was born in Rockingham County, Va., on March 23, 1935, to the late Douglas Henry and Eva Pearl Shifflett Mowbray. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert L. Mowbray and Nelson J. Mowbray, and a brother-in-law, Carroll Walters. Mr. Mowbray was employed with Rockingham Memorial Hospital for many years and had previous employment with Belle Meade Motel and Dunham Bush. He enjoyed hunting and spending time with his cat, Sammy. On Feb. 24, 1975, he married Nora Arlene Craun, who survives. Also surviving are three brothers, Doug Mowbray Jr. and wife, Kay, and Kenneth Mowbray, all of Harrisonburg, and Grover Mowbray and wife, Burnette, of Bridgewater; two sisters, Flossie Walters of Keezletown and Maxine Donovan and husband, John, of Harrisonburg; two sisters-in-law, Edna Mowbray and Barbara Mowbray; and a number of nieces and nephews. Ruby Mae Mowbray, 60, of Harrisonburg, and formerly of Grottoes, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at her home. Ms. Mowbray was born Dec. 16, 1958, in Rockingham County and was a daughter of Avis Watson and the late Alice Taylor Watson. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Aubrey Ray Watson. Ruby worked at Marshalls in Bridgewater for 29 years, where she was an auditor. She enjoyed Bible study, her church, and listening to Gospel Music at home was always a great comfort to her. She is survived by her son, Larry "L.J." Mowbray Jr.; daughter, Amy Mowbray; brother, Don Watson and wife, Phyllis; two sisters, Linda Hamilton and Joyce Miller-Mesmer and husband, Steve; and four grandchildren, Hunter Mowbray, Haley Mowbray, Harley Mace and Garrett Mace. She is also survived by one great-granddaughter, Amaryllis Mowbray. The funeral for Sadie Elizabeth Mowbray, 85, of Route 2, Grottoes, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Eugene K. Souder will conduct the service. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville. Mrs. Mowbray died Nov. 12, 1990, at her home. She had been ill for the past six years. She was born Sept. 30, 1905, in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Frank and Annie Crawford Shifflett. She lived her entire life in the Elkton/Grottoes area. She was a member of the Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, where she was active with the ladies auxiliary. On Nov. 19, 1921, she married Lusby Lewis Mowbray, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Oliver B. Mowbray Sr. of Route 2, Grottoes; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Violet Bell Mowbray, "Sisie," 89, died at Rockingham Memorial Hospital on February 23, 2005. She had been in declining health for the last few years. She was born on July 4, 1915, in Harriston, and was the daughter of the late Harry and Eva Jane Wiseman Mowbray. Miss Mowbray attended schools in Shenandoah. Most of her life she lived in Harrisonburg and had been employed at the Holiday Inn in Harrisonburg. She was a loving grandmother and homemaker for her family. She is survived by a daughter, Marceline Dean of McGaheysville; a brother, Melvin Mowbray and his wife, Mary, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Phyllis Short of McGaheysville; eight grandchildren, Tanya Morris of Ruckersville; Tina Dean of Waynesboro; Michele Patterson of Staunton; Torina Hedrick; David Morris; Tabatha "Muffin" Dean; Tara Charlton; and Dwayne Dean all of Harrisonburg; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, June Taylor and a brother, Odell Mowbray. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 26, at the Chapel of the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Pastor Harold Webster officiating. Dies in Delaware
Mrs. Anne Virginia Shifflett (nee Mowbray) wife of the late Reuben D. Shifflett died November 25, 1974 in a hospital in Delaware at the age of 89 tears. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Mowbray of Berrytown, Va. She was born and raised and spent part of her life in that area before she and her husband moved to Maryland. After the death of her husband in January 1963, she moved to Delaware to live with one of her sons. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Christine Scott, Catonsville, Maryland, Mrs. Margie Berry, Sykesville, Maryland, Mrs. Nina Shifflett, Earlysville, Va., Mrs. Mary Shifflett, Charlottesville, Va. and Mrs. Virginia Haney, Barboursville, Va. Also six sons, Russell of Woodbine, Md., Grover, Catonsville, Md., Raleigh, Oella, Md., Mervin, Ellicott City, Md., Malvin, Great Falls, Montana and William Howard, New Castle, Delaware; one sister. Mrs. Alice Shifflett, Elkton, Va.; one brother, John H. Mowbray, Baltimore; 44 grandchildren, 86 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. George W. Pferdent of Betheny United Methodist Church, Ellicott City, Md. Burial was in Good Shephard Cemetery, Ellicott City, Md., beside her husband, Pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased, Dennis Shifflett, Maynard Shifflett, Edward Shifflett, Marshall Powell, Harvey Powell and Thomas Shifflett. Stack Funeral Home of Ellicott City, Md. had charge of arrangements. She leaves many friends and relatives in Rockingham County.
