SHENANDOAH - The funeral for Mrs. Alma Mae Lawson, 74, of Rt. 1, Shenandoah will be conducted 3 p.m. today at the Warren G. Kyger Funeral Home by the Rev. Luther A. Mountjoy. Burial will be in Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton. Mrs. Lawson died early Saturday in a Radford hospital. She had been ill several years. She was born April 24, 1902 in Rockingham County and was a daughter of the late Thomas and Florence Cook Davis. Mrs. Lawson was a member of the Jehovah's Witness Church. She was the widow of Moses J. Lawson. Surviving are three sons, Vernon A. and James L. Lawson, both of Elkton, and Ronald Lawson of Baton Rouge, La.; three daughters, Mrs. Mildred Burnette of Mt. Ranier Md., Mrs. Beatrice Barnes of Savannah, Ga. and Mrs. Hilda Dean of Weyers Cave; a foster daughter, Mrs. Ruth Crouch of Dublin; grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Alton Lillard Lawson, 85, of Stanardsville died Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at his residence. He was born April 16, 1922, in Greene County and was the son of the late Andrew T. Lawson and Berter T. Lawson. Mr. Lawson was a member of Mount Vernon Methodist Church and was an Army Veteran of World War II. Mr. Lawson is survived by his wife of 57 years, Glenice Haney Lawson of Stanardsville; one daughter, Gloria Lawson Lohr of Brightwood; one son, Thomas Ross Lawson of Ruckersville; seven grandchildren, James Wayland Lohr, Travis Matthew Lohr, Megan Alaina Lohr, Ashley Linn Lohr, Jessica Lawson Critzer, Jeremy Andrew Lawson and Christopher Thomas Lawson; three great-grandchildren, Maxwell Wayland Lohr, Bodie Matthew Lohr and Hannah Riley Critzer; one brother, Haywood J. Lawson; and one sister, Maxine L. Moon. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Gail Diane Lawson; three brothers, Carroll T. Lawson, Campbell D. Lawson and Hiram L. Lawson. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 5, 2007, at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison conducted by the Reverend Valerie Ritter with interment in the Holy Memorial Gardens Cemetery. MRS. AMANDA LAWSON - Mrs. Amanda (Maggie) Catherine Lawson, 1229 North Ave., city, was dead on arrival at the Waynesboro Community Hospital at 7:30 p. m. yesterday. Born in Albemarle County, Mrs. Lawson was a daughter of the late Joseph and Christine Herron Shiflett. She was the widow of Jessie Lawson and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include two sons, John Lawson, Waynesboro, and Joe Lawson, Route 2, Staunton; one brother, Edward Shiflett, Port Republic; one daughter, Mrs. William M. (Mildred) Painter, Waynesboro; 22 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Body will remain at the Etter Funeral Home. Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p. m. Friday in the Chapel of the Etter Funeral Home by Dr. Howard H. Gordon. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Howard Lawson, Berle Painter, William Painter Jr., Samuel Lawson, and Charles Painter. Honorary bearers will be William Madison, Harvey Glass, Charlie Morris, N. M. Amanda Virginia Watson Lawson, 78, of Stanardsville, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Evergreene Meadows Home in Stanardsville. Born Feb. 8, 1924, in Barboursville, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lewis Watson and the late Hattie Gibson Watson. Her husband was the late Hiram Leake Lawson. Mrs. Lawson was a member of the Ruckersville Baptist Church and a retired nursing assistant. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ellen Mead of Charlottesville, and Betty Sue Daniel of Madison; one son, Robert Lawson and his wife, Barbara, of Winterville, N.C.; one brother Edgar Watson of Keswick; three sisters Comora Herndon of Barboursville, Ellen Eubank of Gordonsville, and Gertrude Roberts of Somerset; and five grandchildren, Barbara Yelverton of Richmond, Brandie Mead of Charlotte, Michael John Mead of Charlottesville, Jackie Daniel of Nokesville, and Valerie Daniel of Garner, N.C. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday morning in the Ruckersville Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Charles Stacy. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening at Preddy Funeral Chapel in Madison. Andrew Wesley Lawson, Sr., 77, of Charlottesville, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 10, 2017. Born March 31, 1939, he was the son of the late Clarence and Ruby Lawson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis; his siblings, Clarence, Roger, Barbara, Shirley and Mildred; and a great-granddaughter Phyllis Jean. Andrew is survived by his brother Lewis; his son Andrew, Jr., and wife Sheryl; daughters, Mary, Lisa, and Beverly; a special grandson Drew, whom he raised; other grandchildren, Candy, Chasity, Adam, Ali, Ryan, William, Kirby, and Kelsee; and great grandchildren Nic, Kayla, Gabe, Talon and KJ. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2017 at Faith Baptist Church in Charlottesville with Pastor Ray Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. DANVILLE - Arthur William Lawson, 60, of 246 Bellaire Dr., Danville died Thursday at Memorial Hospital in Danville. He had been in failing health four years. Mr. Lawson was born Feb. 15, 1918 in Greene County and was a son of the late George Robert and Molly Shifflett Lawson. Surviving are his wife, the former Virginia Samuels; three daughters, Betty Latchum and Judy Royster, both of Danville, and Patsy Selfe of Grottoes; a son, Alton Lawson of Luray; a sister, Mary Lou Barton of Grottoes; two brothers, Payton Lawson of Elkton and Jack Lawson of Harrisonburg, and 11 grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the Swicegood Funeral Home in Danville by the Rev. Walter C. Mauldin and the Rev. Carlos Lewis. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens. Barbara Ann Nunley Lawson, 54, of Winterville, NC, formerly of Charlottesville, died on Monday, August 9, 2004 in the Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC. Born December 28, 1949 in Charlottesville she was the daughter of the late Lou Nunley and Ruth Woody Nunley. Barbara was a homemaker and a member of Maple Grove Christian Church. Surviving are her husband, Robert Lawson of Winterville, NC; a sister, Jane Riddle and her husband, Jimmy, of Charlottesville; two nephews, Steve Riddle and his wife, Sandra, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Kevin Riddle and his wife, Jan, and children, Hayley and Brandon, of Okinawa, Japan. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 12, 2004 in the Monticello Memory Gardens with the Mr. Roger Browning officiating. She was born April 16, 1880, in Rockingham County, daughter of the late George and Melinda Boucher Lawson. Her husband was the late George A. Lawson. Survivors are a son, Ernest Lawson of Springfield; a stepson, Jesse Lawson of Baltimore; two daughters, Mrs. Leona Lawson, of Dyke and Mrs. Lannie Raines of Geer; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Roy Staples of Monroe and Mrs. Addie Moore of Bristol; two sisters, Mrs. Kate Davis of Swift Run and Mrs. Lucy Shifflett of Keyston; 18 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He was a member of Fellowship United Methodist Church near Lacey Spring and was employed at Owens Brockway from 1964-1992. Calvin Joseph Lawson, age 61, of Shenandoah, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, near Elkton. Mr. Lawson was born July 16, 1945, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of Marie Blanch (Lam) Lawson of Elkton and the late Peyton Joe Lawson. Mr. Lawson attended Elkton High School and was a lifetime resident of the area. In his earlier years, he attended the Upper Room Church near Elkton. His occupation was a pipefitter and welder. He was a member of the Skyline Eagles No. 4393 in Elkton, where he served as trustee and was also a member of the Shenandoah Moose Lodge No. 2176. Other than his mother, survivors include his companion, Debbie Stepp of Shenandoah; three sons, Arron Scott Lawson and companion, Tina, of Elkton, Troy Scott Lawson and wife, Brandi, of Shenandoah, Shannon William Dodson and wife, Angel, of Elkton; three daughters, Sherry Lynn Morris and husband, Woody, of Elkton, Kandi Michelle Kite and husband, Larry, of Elkton, Amber Tina Appledorn and husband, Ed, of Fountain, Mich.; one brother, Deryle Peyton Lawson and wife, Donna, of Elkton; nine grandchildren, Peyton Lawson, Joseph Lawson, Bambi Lawson, Chassy Lawson, Kimber Lawson, Brittany Lawson, Whitney Kite, April Dodson, Brice Dodson. Carroll Eugene "Jack" Lawson, 65, of Elkton, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004. Mr. Lawson was born Sept. 10, 1938, in Elkton, and was a son of the late Elmer Clarence and Mamie Williams Lawson. He lived in the Elkton area his entire life and graduated from Elkton High School in 1956. He was a carpenter before retiring. Surviving are his wife, Mae Keyser Lawson, whom he married Jan. 31, 1959; two daughters, Diane Watson of Port Republic and Carolyn Faye Lawson of Elkton; a brother, Elmer C. Lawson Jr. of Shenandoah; two sisters, Charlotte Conley and Peggy Dean, both of Elkton; and one granddaughter. The Rev. Champ Jackson Lawson, Sr., 79, of Earlysville, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001 at a local hospital. Born April 16, 1922 in Rockingham County, he was the son of the late Ashby and Lissie Powell Lawson. He was also preceded in death by his son, Champ J. Lawson Jr., who was killed in Vietnam. He served in the Marine Corp during World War II, was a member of VFW No. 2044, Champ J. Lawson Jr. Post. He belonged to Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, was an honorary member of Earlysville Volunteer Fire Dept., and a charter member of Earlysville Puritan Club. He was a retired owner of Hill Top Grocery. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Lawson; a daughter, Peggy Lawson Wharam and her husband, William; four grandchildren, Christopher W. Wharam, Champ Lawson III and his wife Beverly; Mark Jackson Wharam and his wife, Angela, and Mitchell W. Wharam; four great-grandchildren, Jason and Eric Lawson and Allyson and Emily Wharam all of Earlysville; and a number of nieces and nephews. Charles was a member of the Day Starr Worship Center in Gordonsville, Virginia. Charles is survived by his son, Christopher Lawson, and his daughter, Charlie Beth Lawson, along with their mother, Susan Breeden, all of Unionville; two brothers, George Lawson of Charlottesville and Bill Lawson of Barboursville; five sisters, Carolyn Stotler, a devoted sister with whom he resided in Unionville, Diane Wolfrey of Charlottesville, Sandra Watson of Orange, Crystal Rose and Patsy Brown, both of Barboursville; two devoted friends, Donald Ray Yount and Jack Vaughan. On Saturday, August 14, 2021, Charlotte Jo Lawson, loving mother of four children, adoring grandmother of 10, and great-grandmother of 6, passed away at the age of 79. Charlotte was born on May 28, 1942, in Orange, Va., to George and Lula Beth (Shifflett) Rogers. She served over 40 years in the Home Health Care profession caring for and loving others. On January 20, 1959, she married Ray Lee Lawson, who passed on April 14, 1982. She raised four children: sons, Chuck (Ray Jr.) and Rodney, and daughters, Kelly and Holly. Yes, it is true the best parents get promoted to grandparents! For many years Charlotte's home was essentially the golden girls with vibrant additions of grandchildren bringing youthful cheer. Her door was always open and the laughter spilled out onto Cherry Avenue for over 40 years. Grandchildren, Jon-Michael, Tom, Corey, William, Danny, Victoria, Savanah, Mackenzie, Emma, and Austin and her six great-grandchildren enjoyed movie nights, gardening, cooking, games and Tea Parties. The joy "Grandma Pete" shared with these kids is like ripples created in a pond, the impact reaching ever further out through each and every one. As a grandparent Charlotte was a little bit parent, a little bit teacher and a little bit best friend. Charlotte was preceded in death by her father, George; mother, Lula Beth; and brothers, Montie and Dickie. She is survived by brothers, Doug and wife, Vickie, and Danny and wife, Mary Ann; her four children, Chuck, Kelly and husband, Gary, Holly and husband, Mike, and Rodney and wife, Michelle, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Curtis Dove Lawson, 85, of 16813 East Spring Avenue in Elkton, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008. Curtis was born in Elkton on Nov. 24, 1922, and was a son of the late Arthur and Annie Morris Lawson. Curtis graduated from Elkton High School and was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton and the Junior Order of United American Mechanics Lodge No. 149. He was employed by Hensley’s Sales and Service, Sheets Chevrolet and Dick Myers Chevrolet, all in Elkton, for a total of 54 years before retiring. He was a gardener, woodworker and cabinet maker. On Aug. 20, 1944, he married his beloved wife of 64 years, Shirley Funkhouser Lawson, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jerry Lee Lawson and wife, Mary, of Pryor, Okla., and Brent Eugene Lawson and wife, Vickie, of Aurora, Mo.; six grandchildren, Rebecca, Timmy, Libby, Tanya, Rachel and Matthew; and three great-granddaughters, Bailee, Isabella and Mary Beth. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Lawson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton with Pastor Patricia Riggs officiating. The funeral for Della Lee Lawson, 73, of Route 3, Elkton, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Beldor Mennonite Church. The Rev. Robert G. Wenger will conduct the service. Burial will be in the Lawson family cemetery. Mrs. Lawson died Nov. 19, 1992, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, where she had been a patient since Saturday. She had not been In good health since January. She was born May 6, 1919, in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Gaines Morris and Icie Shifflett Morris. She Lived her entire life in the Elkton community and was a homemaker. On Aug. 11, 1937, she married Ott K. Lawson, who died June 28, 1980. Surviving are seven children, Kathleen Morris and Howard Lawson, both of Stanardsville, Leo and Randolph Lawson and Brenda Shifflett, all of Elkton, Leis Hinkle of Keezletown and Eula Kingree of Mount Crawford; 26 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home. Diane Lynn Lawson Helmick, 48, of Harrisonburg, and formerly of Elkton, passed away Sept. 24, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Helmick was born Aug. 24, 1961, in Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of the late Otis Wilson and Janice Shifflett Lawson. She grew up in Elkton and attended the Elkton Church of God and was a homemaker. Diane is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Helmick of Harrisonburg; a son, Brandon Lawson of Elkton; five brothers, Ronnie Lawson, Ricky Lawson, both of Elkton, Gary Lawson Sr. and wife, Tammy, of Waynesboro, Michael Lawson and wife, Tammy, of Broadway, and Jeremy Lawson and wife, Melissa, of Elkton; two sisters, Aileen Moubray and husband, Dave, Sharon Good and husband, Gene, all of Elkton; a companion, Jack Pennington of Harrisonburg; and a number of nieces and nephews. On July 15, 1966, he married Betty Shenk who survives. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960-1964. He worked as a sheetmetal mechanic for 30 years. Elmer Lee Lawson, 80 of Elkton, died May 14, 2012 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. Lawson was born January 17, 1932 in the Swift Run area of Elkton, and was the son of the late Joseph Lurty and Lydia Ann Shifflett Lawson. Mr. Lawson was a lifetime resident of the area, and attended Swift Run School in his youth. He retired from Brockway in Harrisonburg, after 32 years of service. He attended the Elkton Pentecostal Church. He liked to garden, go to auctions, have yard sales and buy, sell and trade. He was a former member of the Harrisonburg Moose Lodge. On January 15, 1955 he married Lorraine (Collier) Lawson, who survives. Also surviving is a sister, Violet Davis, Elkton, special sister in law, Sylvia Gooden Dovel & husband, Jerry, Elkton; numerous nieces and nephews. Born May 21, 1946, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Willard Lawson and the late Hazel Odell Lawson. She was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Aubrey Birckhead. Frances is survived by her husband of 41 years, Bobby Birckhead of Earlysville; her daughter, Teresa Dillard and her husband, Mike, of Fluvanna; her son, Bobby Birckhead Jr. of Earlysville; a granddaughter, Ashley Hildebrand and her husband, Ian, of Pennsylvania; a very special granddaughter, Ashley Grooms, whom she thought of as her own daughter; two great-grandchildren, whom she spoke of often, Gaige McKinley Hildebrand and Ysabella Jalyn Hildebrand, both of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Jesse Lawson Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of Ruckersville, and Melton Lawson and his wife, Myra, of Earlysville; a very special sister, Norma Davis and her husband, Chris, of Ruckersville; a sister-in-law, Thelma Thurman of Troy; a brother-in-law, R. L. Birckhead of Earlysville; her mother-in-law, Margaret Birckhead of Earlysville; a very special, devoted, family relative and friend, Barbara Hussey of Earlysville; and a host of many relatives and friends. Frances worked for the University of Virginia Health Information Services Department for the past 30 years. Frances was loved by all of whom have had the opportunity to have known her. She loved giving and pleasing others, often putting everyone else before herself. Frances was also a member of the Hi-Horse Cloggers for the past 10 plus years. She truly enjoyed clogging with the club at numerous functions. In fact, many times while having a conversation with Frances, her feet would be clogging. Frances will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and a loyal friend to many. Gary was born in Harrisonburg, Va., to the late Otis and Janice Lawson on October 31, 1962. On June 26, 2004, he married his long time love, Tammy Lawson, in Waynesboro, Va. In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his sister, Diane Lawson, and mother-in-law, Judy McDonaldson. He was never confrontational, nor judgmental and had the ability to make fast friends with anyone he met. He was an avid outdoorsman and reader and could often be found fishing, hunting, working in his garden, or reading a western novel. He enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors with his grandchildren, imparting on them the importance of enjoying the little things in life. He cherished his time spent with his wife; drinking their morning coffee, listening to bluegrass music, and their many shared hobbies, as well as time spent with his children and grandchildren. He was decent and humble, smart and talented, kind and sincere. He will be cherished and missed everyday by all that knew him. ELKTON- George Alfred Lawson, 85, who made his home with his son, Henry A. Lawson, of Elkton, died in his sleep Wednesday morning. He had been in ill health for a year. Mr. Lawson, a well-known carpenter and cabinetmaker, was a son of the late B. A. and Mary Dean Lawson. He was born at Stanardsville, January 28, 1873. He moved here following his marriage. His wife, Rosa E. Lawson, died 11 years ago. Mr. Lawson is survived by seven children, William J. Lawson of Toledo, Ohio; Elmer Lawson, Ottowa Lake, Mich.; Mrs. Nina Ordway, of Toledo, Ohio; Mrs. Anna Hensley, Saginaw, Mich.; Mrs. Alice Lam, of Mooseheart, Ill.; Jesse A. Lawson, of Elkton, and Henry A. Lawson, also of Elkton. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters; James Lawson of Gordonsville; Andrew, David, John, Iram, and Zeke Lawson and Miss Mary Lawson of Stanardsville. He also leaves 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. The body will be moved from the Brill Funeral Home to the home of his son, Henry A. Lawson, Thursday afternoon at four o'clock. Harold Lehman will have charge of the services with buriel in the Maiden Cemetery at Swift Run. The body will be removed from the late home and placed in the church Friday afternoon at one o'clock. Elkton Native Shot to Death
Jack B. Lawson Killed Near Hanover.

Jack Bernard Lawson, 42, a native of the Elkton community, who was shot to death near Hanover early Sunday morning, will be buried In the McGaheysville cemetery this afternoon at two o'clock. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John B. Lawson, of Elkton, and had resided In Richmond for a number of years. Hanover police reported that Lawson was shot and killed and his 22-year old woman companion was beaten as they sat in a truck two and a half miles south of Hanover. His companion, Miss Grace Cora Trainham is a patient in the Medical College of Virginia Hospital. She has bruises about the face and throat and other injuries. Hanover Deputy Sheriff Basil H. Evans said Miss Trainham told him that shortly after the couple parked along the railroad tracks at about 3 a.m., a man jumped out of the bushes, shot Lawson and assaulted her. Officers did not reach the scene until two o'clock Sunday afternoon. They found Lawson lying beside the truck with two bullet wounds in his chest. Officers did not learn at once what happened to Miss Trainham in the meantime but theorized that she had been unconscious. Lawson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Belvar Gibson Lawson; two daughters, Bernice Loretta and Frances Louise; two sons, Jack Bently and Robert Samuel; three brothers and five sisters.

James Ludwell Lawson, 74, of 402 Second St., Shenandoah, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. Lawson was born Feb. 4, 1932, in Harrisonburg, and was a son of the late Moses Lawson and Alma Davis Lawson. He worked for the Page County Landfill for two years and was a carpenter for Baughan Construction until the past two years. On Jan. 16, 1956, he married Virginia Irene Corder, who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Kim Denice Lawson Breeden and Jennifer J. (Lawson) Lawson, both of Stanley; two sisters, Hilda Welch of Georgia and Ruth Crouch of Virginia; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and Theresa Roach, whom he helped raise. Dickie Campbell will conduct a memorial service 7 p.m. Thursday at Lily of the Valley Independent Church. ELKTON — Jesse Alfred Lawson, 76, of Rt. 3, Elkton died Friday at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Lawson, who had been ill a month, was a retired carpenter and a member of Evangelical United Methodist Church. He was born Aug. 1, 1907, in Rockingham County and was a son of the late George A. and Rosie Williams Lawson. Surviving are his wife, Bertha Mae Lawson; three sisters, Alice Lam of Covington, Emma Hensley of Saginaw, Mich., and Anna Orgway of Miami; and two brothers, Henry A. Lawson of Elkton and Elmer Lawson of Ottawa, Mich. The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Evangelical United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ronald Davidson. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens east of Harrisonburg. The body will be taken today from, the Brill Funeral Home to the Lawson home, where friends may call.

MCGAHEYSVILLE - John H. Lawson, 80, of Rt. 1, McGaheysville died at Rockingham Memorial Hospital Monday morning. He was born March 6, 1903, in the Beldor area and was a son of the late John B. and Carrie Herring Lawson. Mr. Lawson was a retired Westinghouse employee. In 1925, he married the former Lillie Belle Ford, who died Nov. 10, 1978. Surviving are two sons, Charles Preston Lawson of Rt. 2, Elkton and Reginald F. Lawson Sr. of Stanley; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kyger-Pence Funeral Home near McGaheysville by the Rev. Wayne Wright. John N. Lawson, a retired farmer and Confederate veteran died at 7 o'clock Thursday, July 6, 1922, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. Y. Estes, of Charlottesville, after an illness of only two days. The funeral was held from the residence at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, the service was conducted by Horwood P. Myers, pastor of the First Methodist church. The interment was in Riverview Cemetery. Mr. Lawson was born near Elkton, Rockingham County, Aug. 16, 1840, and was therefore in his 83d year of his age. He entered the service of the Confederacy as a member of the Charlottesville Company and fought throughout the four years of that strike. Most of his life was spent in Greene county, where he engaged in farming pursuits near Stanardsville. Four years ago he went to Charlottesville to make his home with his daughter. Mr. Lawson marred Miss Texanna Collier, of near Stanardsville. She died four years ago. Of a family of 10 children six, survive, five sons and one daughter, J. W. Lawson, of Charlottesville, Charles A. and Grover Lawson, of Beckley, W. Va.; G. E. Lawson of Charleston, W. Va., E. M. Lawson, of Columbus, O., and Mrs. L. Y. Estes, of Charlottesville.

Joseph Angus Lawson, age 69, died at University hospital Wednesday, July 2, following an illness of six weeks. He was a well known farmer in the Geer community. Surviving are his wife and several children. A funeral took place Saturday afternoon at Mt. Vernon church, the Rev. Mr. Kettering and the Rev. H.S. Knight conducting the service. Burial followed in the David cemetery near March.

ELKTON - Mrs. Kate Elizabeth Davis, 90, of Rt. 3, Elkton died Wednesday morning at her home. She had been in falling health several years. Mrs. Davis was born Oct. 6, 1883 in Rockingham County and was a daughter of the late George and Melinda Baugher Lawson. She spent her entire life in the Elkton area and was a member of the Mennonite church. Her husband, John Wilmer Davis, died Jan. 17. Surviving are two daughters, - Mrs. Ethel Shifflett of Rt. 3,; Elkton and Mrs. Fleta Hensley of Rt. 1, Elkton; three grand-children; four great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Lucy Shifflett of Rt. 3, Elkton. The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Upper Room Church by the Rev. Johnny Hensley and the Rev. Harold H. Lahman. Burial will be in Elk Run Cemetery. NEW HOPE -- Laura Maggie (Shifflett) Lawson of Long Meadow Road, died on Thursday (June 17, 2004) at Augusta Medical Center. She was born on August 9, 1907 in Barren Ridge to William and Maude (McDorman) Shifflett. Mrs. Lawson was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Edward Lawson Sr.; three sons, Maynard, Clarence and Harvey Lawson; a daughter Rosie Sears; three brothers, Willie, Elmer and John Shifflett; five sisters, Salley Wagner, Mimmie Springs, Daisy Brown, Kate Warren and Sadie Shifflett; and two grandsons whom she raised, Harry and Roger Lawson. Surviving are two sons, Joseph Edward Lawson Jr. of Stuarts Draft, and Jack Lawson of New Hope; three daughters, Audrey (Peggy) Spitler of Staunton, Margie Harris of New Hope and Genevieve Lawson of New Hope. She is survived by two grandsons whom she raised, Eugene Lawson and Buddy Fishel. A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday in the Hamrick Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Harold Wade. Longtime Dundalk, Maryland homemaker Lavlette R. Dickerson (nee Lawson) died February 12, 2005. She celebrated her 91st birthday 10 days earlier. Born and raised in Earlysville, Virginia, she and her husbsnd, Gaines Dickerson, were newlyweds when they moved to Dundalk in 1935. A widow since January 30, 2004, she lived with her son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Lois Dickerson, for the past four months. She belonged to Dundalk Presbyterian Church and was a member and past officer of Crown Rebekah Lodge 12 in Edgemere. Many years ago she worked as an assistant manager for Avon Products in Baltimore. A homemaker most of her life, she liked sewing, cooking, canning, working in the yard and gardening. For her 70th birthday, she and her husband, son and daughter-in-law vacationed in Hawaii. The foursome had also visited the Soviet Union. Other survivors are sisters Odessa Snow and Nova Burruss of Virginia, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. An infant daughter, Earlene Dickerson, predeceased her. The Rev. Bill Jones, retired Pastor of Dundalk Presbyterian Church and dear friend, conducted services February 16, at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home. Interment follwed at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland.

Layward Lawson Sr., 88, of Dyke, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2017. He was born on July 21, 1929, in Greene County. Layward is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; four children, Brinda and her husband, Harold, Marilyn and her husband, Rudy, L.L. and his wife, Alma, and Kenneth and his wife, Michelle; grandchildren, Yvette, Dawn, Shawntay, Taylor, Luis, Cheyenne, Brianna, Cody and Stephanie; and great-grandchildren, Moneka, Jacoby, Ja' Kail, and Canaan. Layward was a hard worker, having worked his family farm and as a logger for many years. He was caring and loving as a husband, father, and grandfather. Leo Elmer Lawson Sr., 82, of Elkton, passed away Friday, Oct. 21, 2022, at his home. He was born April 26, 1940, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Ott and Della Lee Lawson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Randolph and Howard Lawson and sister, Eula Kingree. Leo worked for Lantz Construction as a brickmason for many years. He enjoyed restoring antique furniture in his retirement. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and will always be remembered as a kind and gentle man. On July 2, 1966, he married Essie Mary Lawson, who survives. Also surviving are his son, Leo Elmer Lawson Jr. and wife, Shelly; daughter, Lisa Winegard and husband, Stephen; granddaughter, Monica Lawson; and sisters, Kathleen Morris, Lois Hinkle and Brenda Shifflett. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial to follow at Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton. Leona G. Lawson, 94, passed away Saturday Jan. 15, 2005 in Albemarle County. She was born in Greene County April 8, 1910 a daughter of the late George and Bessie Lawson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Moses Lee Lawson, a son; George Sterling Lawson, three daughters; Eunice M. Raines, Ruby E. Carter and Eva F. Deane, five brothers; Jesse, Early, Ernest, Willie, Alton, three sisters; Lannie Raines, Lena Staples and Addie Sampson. She is survived by two sons; Lillard Smith Lawson and Layward Lawson, one daughter; Ressie M. Fox, a grandson; Dallas G. Lawson and granddaughter; Linda S. Zirkle, whom she raised, 29 other grandchildren, 45 great- grandchildren and numerous, great-great grandchildren and extended family and friends. She was a longtime member of the Charlottesville Moose Lodge where she enjoyed dancing every Saturday night past her 92nd birthday. She was an avid gardener, both vegetables and flowers. A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18.2005, at the Ryan Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Rodney Zirkle officiating. Leo was a logger. He loved to hunt and to spend time with people. On July 28,1910, she married Sherman Lawson, who died June 4, 1951. Surviving are a daughter, Margie Taylor of Elkton; a son, Jesse A. Lonnie Pearl Lawson, 70, of Stanardsville, passed away Monday Nov. 3, 1997 at home. She was born May 7, 1927, in Greene County, a daughter of the late Will and Rosie Taylor Shifflett. Her husband was the late Jack Lawson. She was also preceded in death by her longtime companion James Elbert Dunnivan. She is survived by a godson, Ronnie Gentry and his wife, Mary, of Stanardsville, and their two sons, Ronnie Conley, Jr. and William Conley; a brother, Charles Shifflett of Stanardsville; three sisters, Mary Seation of Orange, Lily Shifflett of Gordonsville, and Susie Glass of Charlottesville; a number of nieces and nephews also survive. Lorraine Mae Lawson, 86, Elkton, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va. Mrs. Lawson was born May 19, 1935, in Greene County and was the daughter of the late George Herman and Sinia Jane Johnson Collier. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Ann Fulk and husband, Crawford; a brother-in-law, Donald Gooden, and a niece, Tina Byers. On Jan. 15, 1955, she married Elmer Lee Lawson, who preceded her in death on May 14, 2012. Lorraine spent 25 years working at The Elkton Restaurant and was a dedicated member of Elkton Pentecostal Church. She was also a caregiver to those in need. Lorraine loved hymn sings and attending auction and yard sales. Surviving are a sister, Sylvia Gooden Dovel and husband, Jerry, of Stanley; two nephews, Keith Gooden and Daniel Fulk; a niece, Bonnie Carini, as well as her caregivers, Brenda Grimsley, Mertie Blakemore and Catherine Good, who all provided Lorraine with loving care. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2022, at Elkton Pentecostal Church with Pastor Eddie Byers, Pastor Travis Hensley and Pastor Danny Herring officiating. Lottie Lee Baugher Lawson, 92, of Elkton, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at her home. Mrs. Lawson was born July 20, 1913 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Lloyd Lee and Rebecca Jane Powell Baugher. She lived her entire life in the Elkton-Rockingham County area and was a homemaker. On Jan. 31, 1942 she married Floyd E. Lawson; he preceded her in death Jan. 6, 1997. Surviving are two daughters, G. Jean Lawson and Patsy Meadows; two sons, Kenneth Lee Lawson and F. Wayne Lawson, all of Elkton; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Pastor Ray Berry will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Lurtie Elmer Lawson, 84, of Ruckersville, entered into eternal rest Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 13, 2000, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he had been a patient for the past week. He had been ill for the past four years. He was born Dec. 30, 1915, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late David and Louella Lawson. He was a retired carpenter and was loved by many friends and family. He was preceded in death by a son, Leon Lawson and a daughter, Shirley Williams. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 65 years, Beulah Atkins Lawson; two sons, Ronald Lawson, and Darryl Lawson and his wife, Lottie; three daughters, Sylvia Teel and her husband, Kenneth, Patricia Shifflett and her husband, Arthur, and Lois Rogers and her companion, Cliff Breeden, all of Ruckersville; and 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Born in Mission Home, Va., she had lived in various sections of Ridley Township most of her life, and in the Woodlyn section for the last five years. Margaret Elizabeth Lawson, 88, of Harrisonburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at Oak Lea Nursing Home in Harrisonburg. She had been a resident at VMRC for the past 16 years. Mrs. Lawson was born April 28, 1917, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Larney and Willie Mowbray Shifflett. She was employed at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in the dietary department for over 23 years and retired in 1979. She was a lifetime resident of this area and was a member of the Episcopal Church. Survivors include two daughters, Donnie Mae Delaughter of Panama City, Fla., and Bonnie L. Simmons of Harrisonburg; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The Rev. Shirlee K. Margaret Francis Collier Lawson, 83, of Oak Lea Nursing Home in Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at the nursing home. Mrs. Lawson was born Nov. 10, 1921, in Madison County, and was a daughter of the late Clarence and Mary Ella Morris Collier. She was a member of Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton and retired from Sleepwear Inc. in Elkton. Mrs. Collier, along with her parents and siblings, were one of approximately 465 families evicted from their homes located inside what later became the Shenandoah National Park. Marie Blanch Lawson, 92, of Elkton, went to be with Jesus, Thursday, October 27, 2016 at her granddaughters home surrounded by her family. Marie was born February 7, 1924 in Page County and was the daughter of the late, Polly Meadows Lam and Fred Lam. On December 16, 1943 she married Peyton Joe Lawson, who preceded her in death. In addition to her parents and husband she is preceded in death by her son, Calvin Joseph Lawson; brothers, Robert Lam, Norman Lam, James Lam and Albert Lam; sisters, Viola Meadows, Arvella Monger and Shelva Jean Campbell. In addition to her two sons, she also helped raise her grandson Arron Scott Lawson for most of his life. Marie Worked at Blue Bell for a number of years and loved to work outdoors with her flowers. She also liked to go thrift store shopping. In past years she attended a number of churches in the area. She is survived by a son, Deryle Peyton Lawson and wife, Donna; six grandchildren, Arron Lawson and companion, Tina, Sherry Morris, who was her caregiver for the last year, and husband, James, Amber Appleborn and husband, Ed, Troy Lawson and wife, Brandi, Shannon Dodson and wife, Angel, Kandi Herring and husband, Larry; two step grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; brothers, Otis Lam and wife, Joyce, Leo Lam and wife, Evelyn and her sister, Sylvia Shifflett. Mary "Jane" Critzer Lawson Raines, 61, of Crozet, passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at the University of Virginia Medical Center with her family by her side. Jane was born on January 25, 1947, in Crozet, daughter of the late Thomas Irvin Critzer and Mary Fitzgerald Critzer. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Champ J. Lawson Jr. She was also preceded in death by a very dear friend, Shirley Patton. Jane was a supervisor with Richmond Security where she was site supervisor responsible for Music Today in Crozet, formerly ConAgra. She is survived by her two sons, Champ J. "CJ" Lawson III and his wife, Beverly, of Earlysville, Randolph "Pat" Raines of Crozet and his father, Randolph Earl Raines, of Charlottesville; two sisters, Helen Critzer Adcock and her husband, William, of Crozet and Virginia "Ginger" Critzer Williams and her husband, Ed, of Charlottesville; five grandchildren, Champ "Jason" Lawson, Eric Matthew Lawson, LeAnn Marie Raines, Shannon Faith Raines and Sierra Dawn Raines; and a number of devoted nieces and nephews. Jane had a great love for animals and leaves behind two faithful companions, "Bridget" and "Wildthing". Mayme Alice Lawson, 95, died peacefully at her home, 125 Pine St., Elkton, on Sept. 13, 2002. She was born March 9, 1907, and was the daughter of the late John and Lizzy Lam Williams. On Feb. 8, 1936, she married Elmer Lawson, who preceded her in death on May 19, 1961. She is survived by four children, Charlotte Conley and husband, Otho Lee Conley, of Elkton, Peggy Dean of Elkton, Elmer Lawson Jr. and wife, Betty, of Shenandoah, Carroll Lawson of Stanardsville; five grandchildren, Robert Conley, who was raised in her home, Terry Leap and husband, Dickie, of McGaheysville, Steve Dean of Elkton, Tracey Kendig and husband, Ted, of Shenandoah, and Tammy Good and husband, Eddie, of Shenandoah. She also had five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Cory and Josh Good, and David and Cody Buracker, all of Shenandoah, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Lewis E. Lawson, a daughter, Norma Jean Lawson, who died as an infant, two sisters, Lena Dean and Ethel Short, a son-in-law, Hensel Dean, and a very special niece, Shirley Stoneberger. Zelda Long Lawson, 80, of Harrisonburg, died Sept. 27, 2004, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. She had been a resident at the Bridgewater Home since August. Mrs. Lawson was born on Feb. 8, 1924, in Mount Solon, and was the daughter of the late Robert Edgar and Daisie May Click Long. She had worked at Bumbaugh Buick and for many years in the office at Truck Enterprises in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Lawson also worked out of her home as a seamstress, where she made curtains and worked with upholstery. She volunteered at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where she had over 4000 volunteer hours. On March 11, 1950, she married Charles Byers Lawson, who preceded her in death on May 9, 1998. Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Ann Blosser and husband, James, Blue Ridge, Va., Karen Jane White and husband, Andrew H., Keezletown; one brother, Quinton Long, Mount Solon; six grandchildren, Chad Lawson Blosser, Richmond, Va., Shanda Colby Blosser, Chesapeake, Va., Amanda Catherine White, Jae Michael White, Jeremy Chase White, and Craig Ryan White. Milton Wayne Lawson, 63, of Earlysville, died on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at his home. He was born on July 1, 1948, in Charlottesville, the son of the late Jesse Willard and Hazel Jones Lawson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Lawson Birckhead. Mr. Lawson retired from Safeway Stores. He was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church and previously served on the Deacon Board. He loved his church and his church family. From 1971 to 1976, he owned and operated Lawson’s Amoco and Grocery on Tanyard Bridge Road and also worked as a custom butcher of hogs. Mr. Lawson was n member of the Elkton Church of God and a life member of the Elkton Fire Company and the Elkton Emergency Squad. On Sept.. 20, 1957, he married Janice Lynn Shifflett. who survive. Also surviving are five sons, Jeremy Lawson, Ronnie Lawson and Gary Lawson, all of Elkton, Ricky Lawson, Shenandoah, and Michael Lawson, Luray; three daughters, Allene Moubray and Sharon Good, both of Elkton, and Diane Helmick, Harrisonburg; one broth. Mr. R. G. Lawson, 72, a well known resident of March died July 10, 1938. On June 3 he had a stroke of paralysis, from which he never recovered. He had been in failing health for some time. A farmer by occupation, he worked hard and was a good provider. Some 25 or 30 years ago he joined the United Brethren church. He was married twice, his first wife having been the former Miss Sallie Lawson, who died about several years ago. To this union 13 children were born, of who 11 are living. About six years ago he married the former Miss Susie Morris, they had four children. Funeral services were conducted by George Maupin at home. A large group of relatives, friends and neighbors gathered to pay tribute to one whom they had known many years.

He was a graduate of Albemarle High School and attended the Jefferson Professional Institute School of Commerce. He had been with the United States Marine Corps, stationed in Hawaii. Steven Wayne Lawson, 55, of Kratzer Road near Linville, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. Lawson was born Jan. 26, 1951, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of Alton W. "Al" Lawson of Harrisonburg and the late Bernice Turk Lawson. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He lived in Florida for 11 years before returning to the Valley and was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. He retired as an electrician for Leon’s Electric. In addition to his father, he is survived by his companion of 14 years, Paula K. Dean; a son, Gregory C. Lawson of Harrisonburg; and a sister, Susan Lawson Vaughan of Pulaski. The Rev. Larry Thompson will conduct a graveside service 11 a.m. Monday at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens with military honors by the Rion-Bowman VFW Post. Thomas S. Lawson 1925 - 2013 On Wednesday evening, April 30, 2013, Thomas S. Lawson, known to generations of Greene County baseball enthusiasts as "Sink," passed away at home. Thomas was born in Stanardsville, on January 22, 1925, to the late Sidney S. Lawson and Meta Roudabush Lawson as an only child. He was an outstanding person, soldier, coach, citizen, and of course father and husband. He leaves a bereaved family and community to mourn his absence. In addition to his parents and numerous members of his paternal family, Thomas was predeceased by a maternal aunt, Nora Wampler, who shared many stories of his childhood; a maternal uncle, Ernest "Jack" Roudabush, with whom he shared a special relationship; and as he himself said many times a wonderful mother-in-law, Mrs. Ida B. Deane. Left to cherish his memories and life's work are his wife of 62 years, Dorothy D. Lawson; his four children, Kyle A. Lawson and his wife, Linda, of Stanardsville and Helena, Montana, Darrel D. Lawson and his wife, Carolyn, and Lori Lawson Tawney, all of Stanardsville, and Marilyn Lawson Peacock and her husband, Clifford, of Portsmouth, Virginia, and Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina; a very special oldest grandchild, Edward D. Lawson and his wife, Victoria, of Ruckersville; six other grandchildren, Meghan Davis and husband, Eric, Gennie Morris and husband, Chris, and Blaine Tawney, all of Stanardsville, Brittany Tawney and companion, Rudy Rankin, of Waynesboro, Sean Peacock, and Sheila Peacock and companion, Sam Geer, of Portsmouth, Virginia; and seven great-grandchildren, Jessica, Jaimi and Makenzie Lawson of Orange, Virginia, Charlee and Zane Davis, and Lyndsey and soon-to-be Lily Tawney of Waynesboro. Additional survivors include his brother-in-law, Harold Deane and wife, Lois, of Earlysville; and his sister-in-law, Joan Watson of Ruckersville. Thomas was a soldier in the United States Army and served overseas in Germany during World War II and after; he was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict. He spent the end of his military duty as a Military Policeman in the area around Richmond, where he and Dorothy resided early in their marriage and where the two sons were born. After relocating back to their home town and building their first and only home in 1955, Thomas worked for Columbia Gas Transmission, retiring in 1987, with 33 years of service. During his lifetime, Thomas always considered hard work and willingness to do so a fair measure of a person. That same belief must have guided him to his years of public servitude. He was one of the founders of the Greene County Youth Center Inc. in the late 1950's; faithful volunteer and coach for many years at the youth center. He was a PTA president and active member eventually named a lifetime member. He served the County of Greene in positions on the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Board of Supervisors. Velma S. Lawson, 74, of Charlottesville died Friday, Aug. 31, 1990 at her residence. Born May 1, 1916 in Greene County, she was the daughter of the late William Smith and Lou Mittie Morris Shifflett. Mrs. Lawson was retired from Acme Visible Records. She attended the Covenant Church of god and was a graduate of Blue Ridge School, where she served on the alumni committee. She was also a member of the Senior Center. Survivors include two daughters, Glenda Lawson Morris of Charlottesville and Patricia Lawson Morris of Crozet; a son Ellis Hugh Lawson of Westminster, Md., two sisters, Lera Violet Monger and Sara Katherine Morris; four grandchildren, Brian Ellis Lawson, Katherine Lura Lawson, Lee Morris and Lori Ann Morris; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Clara Amelia Sandridge, Eunice Smith Shifflett, Alma Avis Morris, Cora Margaret Shifflett, Amos Jackson Shifflett, George Edgar Shifflett and William Edward Shifflett. The funeral for Vernon A. Lawson Sr., 76, North Eastside Highway, Elkton will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. The Rev. Jim Harrison and Hannah Glisson will officiate. Burial will follow in the George Comer Cemetery, Shenandoah, with gravesite rites by the Gooden Brothers' Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9292. Mr. Lawson died at home Sunday afternoon July 16, 2000. He had been ill since March 1999. He was born at Elkton on February 18, 1924, and was the son of Moses J. Lawson and Alma Mae Davis Lawson. He served in communications with the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retired electrician from Merck. Mr. Lawson was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, where he had served as Sunday school superintendent and on a number of committees. He was a member of the Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292 at Elkton. On August 31, 1946, he married the former Ardath Turner, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Vernon Lawson Jr., Mount Crawford, Anthony D. Lawson, Elkton, Rob Lawson, Shenandoah; a daughter, Rebecca 'Becky' Campbell, Shenandoah; a brother, James Ludwell Lawson, Stanley; two sisters, Hilda Welch, Savannah, Ga., and Ruth Crouch, Dublin,; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Violet Ellen Lawson Davis, 80, of Elkton, passed away August 18, 2022 at her home. Mrs. Davis was born September 6, 1941 at Swift Run near Elkton, and was the daughter of the late Lurty and Lydia Shifflett Lawson. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Daniel King; brothers, Otis Lawson, Elmer Lawson; a sister, Clarice Smith. She was a 1960 graduate of Elkton High School and an active member of the Elkton Volunteer Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary for many years. She was a great cook and enjoyed crafting and riding on the Skyline Drive and watching hummingbirds. She retired from Genie Company after 46 years of service. On March 4, 1960 she married D.L. Davis, who died January 12, 2021. She is survived by daughters, Linda Ann Davis, Terry Davis King, both of Elkton; grandchildren, Raven D. King and husband, Vandon, Morgan Davis King; and a number of nieces and nephews. Burial will be private at Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton. Virginia Irene 'Peggy' Lawson, 72, of Stanley, died on Tuesday, May 31, 2011. She was born on Sept, 13, 1938 in Luray and was a daughter of the late William Hamilton and Mildred Helen Buracker Corder. Mrs. Lawson had been employed by Skyland for 20 years in housekeeping. She was a member of the Stanley Seventh-day Adventist Church. On Jan. 16, 1956, she married James Ludwell Lawson, who died on Jan. 7, 2007. She is survived by a daughter, Kim Denice Breeden of Stanley; a brother, William Dallas Corder of Stanley; three sisters, Doreene Griswold, Patsy Wright and Portia Painter, all of Stanley; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer 'Jen' Lawson; and two brothers, Jerry Mellon and Rex Corder. A memorial service was conducted on Saturday, June 4, at the Lily of the Valley Independent Church by the Rev. Dickie Campbell. Virginia Samuels Lawson, 80, of 246 Belair Dr., died Thursday, Nov.1, 2001 as the result of an automobile accident. Mrs. Lawson was born in Elkton on Aug. 17, 1921, a daughter of the late Clee Samuels and Myrtle Hitt Samuels. She was married to Arthur William Lawson who predeceased her in 1978. Mrs. Lawson had made her home in Danville for 45 years and worked at Dan River, Inc. for nearly 20 years and she attended Riverview Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Patsy Self of Grottoes, Betty Wad and Judy Atkinson both of Luray; one step-son, Alton Lawson of Luray; one sister, Alice Davis of Elkton; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5 at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Duane Blevins. Interment followed at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Willard E. Lawson, 80, of Stanardsville passed peacefully from this world and the loving arms of his family into the bosom of the Almighty on June 22, 2005. Born Nov. 12, 1924, his earthly journey began with childhood on the family farm in Greene County. At 18 he left Greene County for the first time for the Army and WW II. At 19 years old he was one of many who stormed Normandy on D-Day and fought throughout Europe. He was wounded twice and received several medals and commendations. Battles included the fall of Aachen and the famous Battle of the Bulge. After the War he returned home and spent the rest of his life being a husband, father, patriot, and servant of Jesus Christ. The pain of losing the head of our family is softened by the quality of the life he led. An example to us all, he set the bar high indeed. Cherished memories will include his love for life in general, and in particular his love for eating good food, throwing his head back and swaying while singing in the church choir, raising/training/hunting bird dogs, playing and coaching baseball, fishing with grandchildren, throwing horseshoes, playing a lively game of cards, gardening, and above all being the rock of our family. Truly, "Big Papa" never met a stranger, and treated all people with respect. He met every challenge of his life, including his final battle with cancer, with courage, conviction, and the certainty of eternal life. We are so very proud of him. He was the son of the late Hiram and Carrie Lawson. He was preceded in death by two brothers; H.J. Lawson and Hubert Lawson. He is survived by his only love, best friend, and wife of 57 years, Evelyn Snow Lawson; one daughter, Donna and her husband, David Roach; two sons, Ronnie and his wife, Doris, Steve and his wife, Cherri; seven grandchildren, Chris, Scott and his wife, Polly, Dawn and her fiance', Caleb, Mollie and her husband, Greg Davis, Matthew Baber, David Lee Roach and his wife, Nicki, and Todd Kell and his wife, Taylor, seven great-grandchildren, Cory and mother Brittany, Mary Evelyn, DeAnna, Emma, Hanna, Meg and Haley; one sister, Genelle McMullen "the Rose"; two brothers, Eugene Lawson and Bernie Lawson, and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Special thanks to niece Debbie Williams, a special person who was always there. William Mike "Bill" Lawson, 71, of Elkton, died May 6, 2005, at his home. Mr. Lawson was born July 8, 1933, at Swift Run near Elkton, and was the son of the late Mike S. and Minnie Williams Lawson. Mr. Lawson was a graduate of McGaheysville High School and Massanutten Vo-Tech. He was a manager at A.B. Torrence Construction for 21 years and a nurse for 30 years before retiring. He was an antique dealer at Rocky’s in Weyers Cave for a number of years. He was a member of the St. Stephen & the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church at Rocky Bar, where he was the organist and choir director for 20 years. He served as an officer in the National Parent-Teacher Association. Mr. Lawson is survived by his best friend and wife of 54 years, Gloria "Sissy" Shifflett Lawson; two children, Keith Lawson, Elkton, Sharon DeBoever and Frank, Elkton; a brother, Newman Lawson, Delmar, Del.; three grandchildren, Heather, Joshua and Hannah; a great-grandchild, Alec. Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Rodgers, Oma Bateman; three brothers, Nelson Lawson, and two infant brothers. The Rev. Stuart Wood will conduct a graveside service 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. at St. Stephen & the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Rocky Bar.
