Muscatine - Clyde E. Gabriel, 76,
of Cedar St. formerly of Wilton, died March 26, 1998, at University of Iowa
Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Services will be at Ralph J.
Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. The Rev. Leif Pohl of Grace Lutheran
Church will Officiate. Pallbearers will be Drew Grossklaus, David
Grossklaus, Anthony Peterson, Amber Peterson, Andrew and Oliver Arnold.
Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery in Wilton. Memorials may be made to the
Clyde E. Gabriel Scholarship Fund. He was born in Louisa County on April 27,
1921, the son of Clyde E. and Florence Shiflet Gabriel. He married Ruth M.
Weiersheuser on Dec. 12, 1943, in Muscatine. He graduated from Muscatine
High School in 1940, Muscatine Junior College in 1946, Iowa State Teachers
College, with a bachelor of arts in 1948, and the University of Iowa, with a
master's degree in 1951. He taught at Parkersburg, Iowa from 1948-50, and
then with the Muscatine Community School District from 1951-83, as an
administrator, counselor and teacher. He was a life member of the National
Education Association and the Iowa State Teachers Association, a member and
past president of the Muscatine "33 Club," a member of the American Legion,
Iowa Lodge No. 2 AF&AM, York Rite, and was a 32nd degree member of the
Davenport Consistory. Survivors include one sister, Bonnie Sander of
Muscatine; two nieces, Linda Arnold of Davenport, and Deborah Grossklaus of
Muscatine; and one nephew, Michael L. Peterson of Rock Island, IL. His
parents and his beloved wife, Ruth in 1990, preceded him in death.

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son. Chaz
Gallegos, 24, a loving husband, daddy, son, brother, nephew, uncle and friend,
left us unexpectedly on July 26, 2017. Chaz was born on May 21, 1993 in West
Valley, Utah to Cheri Shiflett and Ricky Gallegos. He was raised and grew up in
Utah and upon graduation from high school, he met and married Dezirae on
November 14, 2014. Together they have one daughter, Sophia Rose Gallegos. Chaz
made sure his wife and daughters needs were always met. He worked hard to
provide for himself and his family. He was proud of the fact that he was making
things happen on his own. Hard work, perseverance and sacrifice in all things,
he willingly put onto himself to succeed in life. Never one to sit back and
whine about stuff, instead he would tell himself what do I need to do to fix
things and make things better. Always wanting to make things right. He carried
with him the values and principles that his grandparents and mom and dad
instilled into him throughout his life. Hard work, respect, dedication, positive
attitude, hope, kindness, strength and love. He tried to treat others as he
wanted to be treated. Always being there for his family and friends and never
wanting to disappoint them. He accomplished all these things with a fun-loving
attitude and a smile on his face. He had a confidence and trust within himself
and was grateful for and valued what he had. Chaz was wise beyond his years.
Chaz was a very private, independent, hardworking, intelligent, resilient,
fun-loving person. He was fiercely loyal to his family and friends. He always
strived to do the right thing. Always there to help or lend a hand. Chaz loved
little kids, loyal friends, good conversation, dinners and barbeques at his
house, his grandma's beans and tortillas, green chili, water fights, playing
games, his dogs, guns, shooting his guns, riding four wheelers, his tattoos,
keeping his truck looking good, taking care of his yard or just hanging out at
his house with family and friends, having a cold one together. He had a certain
happy go lucky attitude toward life and never tried to let everyday stupid,
meaningless problems in life bother him or get him down. Always looking to
better himself and his situation. Totally optimistic about life. Only wishing
for good things for himself and those around him. Chaz was a beautiful person
with a kind and gentle soul who loved and was loved by many people in his life.
We want to thank everyone for all their support, prayers and love during this
painful time. Survived by his wife, Dezirae; daughter, Sophia; mother and
father, Cheri and Ricky; sister, Cheany; uncles, Eddie, Brian, Chad, Tony;
grandparents, Joan and Joe; in laws, Delia and Glen; nieces, nephews, cousins
and friends. Preceded in death his grandparents, Martha and Elias; uncle,
Freddie. Chaz will be deeply missed by his family, but we take comfort in
knowing his grandparents, Martha and Elias, have found him and welcomed him
home. He truly loved and missed them dearly. Though our lives will never be the
same, we do look forward to being with Chaz again. May his memory be treated
with respect and dignity. Rest in Peace. Funeral services will be held on
Friday, Aug. 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church, 624 W. Lennox
St., Midvale. There will be a viewing on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at
the church, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. There will be a viewing one hour prior to

Doris Herrion Gallihugh, 65, of Barboursville, died on Thursday, November 10,
2011, at her residence. She was born on January 22, 1946, in Orange County,
daughter of the late Henry Howard Herrion and Dorothy Rogers Herrion. She was
also preceded in death by a son, Terry Ralph Gallihugh. Doris was a former
employee of Frank IX and Sons in Charlottesville and Teleservice in Orange. She
was a member of Blue Run Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and a
member of WMU. She is survived by her husband, Thomas M. Gallihugh Jr. of
Barboursville; a son, Kevin Wade Gallihugh and his wife, Kim, all of
Barboursville; two brothers, Jessie Herrion and wife, Elsie, of Barboursville,
and Ronnie Herrion of Blue Ridge Shores; three sisters, Jean Thacker of Orange,
Joyce Cook and husband, David, Bonnie Dibble and husband, Jay, all of
Gordonsville; a life long friend, Mack Shifflett of Barboursville; four very
special children in her life, Austin, Taylor, Cameron and Kelsi; and a number of
nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, November 12,

Sallie Belle Garber, 101, of Waynesboro died Thursday at Bridgewater Home, where
she had lived for 13 years. Mrs. Garber was born Sept. 23, 1887, in Augusta
County and was a daughter of the late John R. and Amanda Shifflett Reed. She had
lived in Mount Sidney and New Hope before moving to Waynesboro. She was a member
of Middle River Church of the Brethren, the New Hope and Waynesboro Home
Extension clubs and the Waynesboro Women’s Club. She was also a member of the
Council of Organizations for the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center. On Oct.
25, 1909, she married Homer F. Garber, who died Oct. 14, 1973. Surviving are
three sons, Cleatis F. Garber of Falls Church, and Harold L. and Paul W. Garber,
both of Waynesboro; a daughter, Dolly Harner of New Hope; 16 grandchildren; and
35 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Middle
River Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Dennis L. Brown, Burial will be in the
adjacent cemetery. Friends may call at Lindsey Weyers Cave Funeral Home, but the

STAUNTON — Peggy Jean (Carroll) Gardner, 71, wife of Rev. William B. Gardner
III of Staunton passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Augusta Health in
Fishersville. Mrs. Gardner was born Aug. 31, 1941, in Churchville, a
daughter of the late Elsie (Carroll) Carroll. Peggy attended Arbor Hill
Church of the Brethren and was retired from Babies "R" Us where she was
employed as a clerk. In addition to her husband of 52 years, Peggy is
survived by a son, Donald Roy Gardner of Woodbridge; a daughter, Katrina M.
Bell and her husband, Matthew, of Catlett; a brother, Paul E. Carroll and
his wife, Bessie, of Staunton and a grandson, Christopher Bell of Catlett. A
celebration of life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013, at
Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Grant Simmons. Burial will follow in

Staunton - William Brown Gardner, III, 83, widower of Peggy Jean (Carroll)
Gardner of Hays Avenue, Staunton passed away Thursday, March 11, 2021 at
Augusta Health in Fishersville. Mr. Gardner was born on January 26, 1938 in
Staunton, a son of the late William B. Gardner, Jr. and Mary Virginia
(Shiflett) Gardner. William attended Arbor Hill Church of the Brethren. He
served in the United States Air Force for twenty-two years and retired from
United Airlines where he was employed as Reservations Agent. Later in life,
Mr. Gardner became an ordained minister and filled in for various churches
throughout the valley. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, the
American Legion, and he enjoyed woodworking. Surviving is a son, Donald Roy
Gardner of Woodbridge; a daughter, Katrina M. Gardner of Centreville; a
grandson, Christopher Bell and his wife Ashley; a sister, Crys Sragovitz of
Staunton; nephew, Ben Sragovitz and his wife Ashley; and a niece, Shana
Stagner. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday,

Ruby L. (Gay) Seymour, 87, died Saturday, December 13, 2008,
at York Lutheran Village at Sprenkle Drive. She was the wife of Roderick "
Dixie " L. Seymour, to whom she was married for 72 years. Mrs. Seymour was
born December 9, 1921 in Rockingham, Va. She was the daughter of the late
Julius E. and Annabelle (Blackwell) Gay. Mrs. Seymour was the owner/operator
of the former Dixie's Grocery for 8 1/2 years and most recently the former
owner/operator of the Dixie Motel & Trailer Court for 23 1/2 years. She was
a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and of the York
County Mobile Home Association. She was an angel on earth and loved by all.
Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter, Rochelle "Roxie" L.
Anstine and her husband Dale of York; six grandchildren, Robin Klinedinst,
Jason Anstine, Amanda May, Amber Rogers, Joshua Anstine and Erin Eyler; five
great-grandchildren, Benjamin Klinedinst, Erica Klinedinst, Maya Anstine,
Georgia Rogers and Hugh Rogers; two great-great-grandchildren, Caden and
Neveah; two brothers, John H. Gay of York and Clarence L. Gay of Tavares,
Fla.; special friends, Bill and Barb Lucia and family of York. She was

York, John Hobert Gay, Sr., 94, went home to be with his Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at Country Meadows at
Leader Heights. He was the husband of the late Betty Jean (Lytle) Gay and
the late Wanda (Boyce) Lewis Gay. A viewing will be held from 6 - 8 p.m.
Friday and Saturday from 10 - 11 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church 3920 East
Prospect Rd., York, PA 17406. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. at
the church with Rev. Steven J. Warner officiating with a special military
recognition by the Honorable Todd R. Platts. In honor of John's patriotic
spirit, attendees are encouraged to consider wearing some form of red, white
and blue. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery with full military rites
presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. The John W. Keffer
Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc. is assisting with arrangements. John was
born December 2, 1923 on Cedar Mountain, Albemarle County, VA, a son of the
late Julius Edward Gay and Annabelle (Blackwell) Gay Phipps. In 1936, the
family moved to Stewartstown in York County. John served in the Civilian
Conservation Corps helping build park structures at Cowans Gap PA State
Park. John was a WWII combat anti-aircraft artilleryman with the 7th
Infantry Division, 502nd 90 M.M. Gun Battalion on Leyte and Okinawa, with
his unit destroying 45 Japanese planes and another 28 planes probably
destroyed and 17 planes damaged. John served as an honor guard for President
FDR's visit to Hawaii during WWII. He was a member of the United Auto
Workers Union and helped organize the UAW at the Caterpillar York Plant
where he worked for 31 years in the heat treat division and later as a
factory accountant. He helped found the Caterpillar Employees Credit Union
and served 26 years as a member of the Board of Directors, including serving
as Treasurer for the successor, York Tracktown Employees Credit Union. John
attended William Penn High School during 1938-1940 and was an honorary
graduate of Central York High School Class of 2002, where WWII Veterans were
given the opportunity to participate in a high school graduation service.
John and his son, John Jr. were the first father and son to graduate on the
same day from York College of PA in 1976. He attended Grace Baptist Church
of York. He enjoyed watching college football with his sons, especially Penn
State and Florida. In his later years, he loved telling stories, going to
the movies and eating at Cracker Barrel while socializing with the
waitresses. He was thankful for his caregivers at Country Meadows and
especially liked that they called him by his boyhood name, Johnny. John was
a member of Springettsbury VFW 5865 and served as Post-Commander (1999-2000)
and District 21 VFW Legislative Officer (2002-2003). He served as a member
of the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Applebee's in Springettsbury
Township has recognized John's service with his VFW photo embossed into the
restaurant wallpaper. John was recognized on ABC-TV 27 for Veteran's Day
2014 in a feature story related to the York Rotary Honor Flight visit to the
WWII Memorial in Washington, DC. John is survived by his sons, John H. Gay.
Jr. and his wife, Loyce, of York Springs and Jeffrey A. Gay and his wife,
Pamela, of York; grandchildren, Steven J. Gay, Jeffrey B. Gay, Kimberly A.
Cordora, Michael D. Gay and wife, Carrie, Jennifer E. Bartley, Tiffany R.
Blackstone and husband, Andrew, Daniel J. Gay and wife, Amanda; eight
great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild. He was preceded in
death by a sister, Ruby L. Seymour and her husband, Roderick; and a brother,
Clarence L. Gay and his wife, Mildred. He is also survived by multiple

GEALY
Robert Glenn Gealy, son of Glenn and Dorothy Dunlap Gealy, was born
four miles northeast of Gordon on March 20, 1924, in the farmhouse which was
his home for most of his life. Death came on Oct. 20, 1990 at the Rapid City
Regional Hospital. He attended the lower elementary grades in the Gordon and
Sunny Knoll Schools, transferring to Mt. Pleasant School when he was a third
grader. Like his father before him and his children after him, Robert
completed eighth grade at Mt. Pleasant and 12th grade at Gordon High School.
After graduation in 1941, he worked in a Los Angeles electroplating shop
prior to entering the Army Air Corps in 1943. During his tour of duty,
Robert trained as bombardier and was commissioned as a second lieutenant.
After the war he enrolled at Park College in Parkville, MO where he met Ruth
Shifflett, who became his bride on Aug. 22, 1948 at Dexter, IA. In the
meantime he had transferred to the University of Nebraska, and in the spring
of 1949 he received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture.

Ferris Eldred Gentzler, 84, of Pawleys Island, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2011
at Waccamaw Hospital after complications following lung surgery earlier in the
week. He was born October 16, 1926, near Two Buttes, Colorado, one of five
children. He was the son of the late Jacob A. Gentzler and Allene Shiflet
Gentzler. Mr. Gentzler served as a weather observer in the United States Air
Force in Panama. He was a graduate of San Diego State University in 1949 and in
later years earned designations of Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered
Financial Consultant. He spent the first part of his career in Washington, D.C.,
working in sales for Remington Rand and later New York Life Insurance Company.
He and his family left D.C. for Charleston, South Carolina in 1969, when he was
named General Manager of New York Life's regional office there. In Charleston,
Gentzler served as President of the Charleston Estate Planning Council and the
Charleston Chapter of Chartered Life Underwriters. He also served as Chairman of
the South Carolina State Convention of Life Underwriters in 1975. After early
retirement, Mr. Gentzler founded Financial Concepts, Inc. a financial planning
and consulting firm in Washington, D.C., serving as President until final
retirement and a return to South Carolina in 1993. Mr. Gentzler had a lifelong
interest in music and was an accomplished musician. Through the years, he had
been a member of and soloist with several church choirs and choral groups. He
sang principal roles with the San Diego Light Opera Company, several Light Opera
and Little Theatre Companies in the Washington, D.C. and Charleston, South
Carolina areas. In recent years, he had performed solo piano recitals in his
home for friends and neighbors. He was an avid golfer, who was out on the golf
course 10 days before his death, and a member of the Litchfield Country Club in
Pawleys Island. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Brenda Hughes Gentzler;
his three children, Doreen Gentzler Miller of Chevy Chase, Maryland, John
Gentzler of Myrtle Beach, and William Gentzler of Falls Church, Virginia. He is
also survived by five grandchildren, Lauren, Amanda, Christopher, Carson and
Jacob; as well as a sister, Marjorie Anderson, and two brothers, Virgil and Max
Gentzler, who all live in Southern California. A memorial service will be held
11 a.m. Thursday, June 16, 2011 at St. Paul's Waccamaw United Methodist Church
with Reverend Nels Ledwell and Reverend Charles Hughes officiating. In lieu of
flowers, the family requests donations to the St. Paul's Waccamaw United

Kent Vernon Gessford, 63, of Shady Side passed
away October 13, 2019. He was born July 26, 1956 in Cheverly, MD to Richard
Leslie and Mary Frances (Shifflett) Gessford. Kent was raised in Shady Side
where he lived his entire life along with his siblings and graduated from
Southern High School. He built his reputation as an excellent plumber with McNew
and Sons Plumbing, Inc. and later became a master plumber, owning and operating
Kent V. Gessford Plumbing, Inc. Kent was known as a hard worker and spent many
years commercially crabbing and was proud to have received his Captains license
along the way. In his spare time, Kent enjoyed hunting, fishing with his
brothers and friends, crabbing, reading, building cars and boats, and his dog
Chance, who will miss him greatly. Kent was also proud to have achieved his
lifelong goal of building his home in Chincoteague, where he and Stephanie would
spend their days. Kent will be remembered as an intelligent, hardworking man who
excelled at everything he did. Kent is survived by his children Kent J. Gessford
and wife Darci of St. Leonard, Wayne W. Gessford and wife Megan of Prince
Frederick, and Michael D., Victoria F., and Robert D. Gessford, all of Shady
Side and his sweetheart Stephanie Younker of Shady Side. He is also survived by
five grandchildren and siblings Richard "Dickie" Gessford, Cathy Thomas, and

was a member of the Nitro Moose Lodge and attended the Church of Christ, Nitro.

Michael Gillispie, 74, of Clifton Hill passed away Thursday, November 12,
2020, at the Brunswick Nursing & Rehab Center in Brunswick. Larry was born
on May 6, 1946, in Moberly, MO, the son of Russell and Lorene (Shiflett)
Gillispie. He was united in marriage to Cindy Quinn on December 11, 1977, in
Huntsville, MO. Larry was the owner and operator of O'Lari Gun Service in
Huntsville, MO. He was a Shriner and a member of the Masonic Lodge in
Huntsville. Larry enjoyed working on guns. He is survived by his wife Cindy
of Clifton Hill, MO; two children, Michael Gillispie (Chong Im) of South
Korea and Kathy Thorpe (Jay) of Illinois; two grandchildren, Jackson and
Cade Thorpe; one brother, Charles Gillispie (Sherry) of Renick, MO. Larry

76, of Carthage were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 1992 at Jimerson

Sunday, April 19, at his residence. Born on June 17, 1915 in Navarro County,
Texas, he was the son of John Leroy and Martha Schifflette Gipson. Mr.
Gipson was retired as a construction machinist and Snap-On Tool dealer. He
was a veteran of World War II, having served as Chief Petty Officer in the
United States Navy and had lived in Carthage for 15 years, moving from Van
Vleck, Texas. Mr. Gipson was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Gipson is survived by
his wife, Mrs. Florine Gipson of Carthage; one daughter, Marsha Barden of
Carthage; one sister, Irene Pollan of Ferris, Texas; two grandchildren,
Jared and Jessica Barden of Carthage. Serving as pallbearers were Homer Vos,
Alan O'Connell, Eugene Watson, Richard Pennington, Thomas Monroe and Ben

Bertis Lamon Glenn passed away in the Lord's hands on Thursday, November 4, 2010
after a long battle with cancer. Born on September 9, 1922, Bertis was 88 years
old at the time of his death. Funeral services will be held at 10:30am on
Monday, November 8th, at Sunnybrook Christian Church in Stillwater. Paul
Anderson will officiate. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery in
Stillwater. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Bertis was born to
Joe and Zelma (Shiflett) Glenn in McPherson, Oklahoma. He was the youngest son
in a family of seven boys and two girls. After graduating high school, Bertis
served from 1942 to 1946 in the US Army during World War II. After receiving an
honorable discharge from the Army, Bertis attended Oklahoma State University
graduating in 1952 with a D.V.M. from the Veterinary Medicine School. After a
short time in private practice in southwest Arkansas, he joined the faculty of
OSU's Veterinary Medical School, teaching Pathobiology in Veterinary Biomedical
Sciences. Bertis was always eager to learn as demonstrated by earning his M.S.
in Veterinary Pathology from OSU in 1961 and a PhD. in 1963 from OU Medical
School. In 1964, he was credentialed as a Diplomate of the American College of
Veterinary Pathology. In 1985, he retired from OSU where he continued to hold
the title of Professor Emeritus. While working at OSU, Bertis met Helen
Elizabeth ‘Betty' Gregg, from Kingsport Tennessee. They fell deeply in love and
were married on June 19, 1954, which Bertis noted as ‘the best decision of his
life.' Betty and Bertis' beautiful, generous and abiding love were a gift to all
who knew them. Although they were not blessed with children of their own they
extended kindness and generosity to many young people, effectively ‘adopting'
them into their family. After 45 years of marriage, Betty passed away on June
30, 1999. Bertis was a fine Christian man, a member of Sunnybrook Christian
Church where he was an active member of the Church Builder's Sunday school
class. His lifestyle was that of a dutiful and thoughtful man. He was a
caretaker to the infirmed, provided shelter to the homeless and financial
assistance to many young students at OSU. Riding his motorcycle and gardening
were avid hobbies. In addition to his wife, Betty, Bertis was preceded in death
by his mother and father, four of his brothers, Lynn, Wayne, Marvin and Eldon
and his two sisters, Winnie and Minnie. He is survived by his brother, Weldon
and wife, Marion, of San Diego, California; his cousin, Alan Bright and wife,
Linda, of Jersey Village, Texas; his brother-in-law, George Phibbs of
Stillwater, Oklahoma, and many nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers will be
Joe Marvin Glenn, Cecil Phibbs, Jeff Polk, Casey Flickinger, Richard Reibert,
Don Phibbs, Michael Phibbs and John Phibbs. Honorary pallbearers will be George

MARVIN THOMAS GLENN
Marvin T. Glenn, a longtime resident of Henryetta, was born on October 15, 1917
in Marlow, OK to Joe Glenn and Zelma Shifflett Glenn. He was a member of the
First Christian Church of Henryetta and was once named Henryettan of the Year.
Marvin was a veteran of WWII and worked as a Master Mason. Marvin passed away on
January 13, 2010 in Tulsa, OK at the age of 92 years. Marvin was preceded in
death by wife, Christina, parents, Joe and Zelma Glenn, brothers, Eldon Glenn,
Wayne Glenn, and Lynn Glenn, and one sister Minnie Stanberry. Survivors include
3 children: Joe Glenn and wife Barbara of Tulsa, Ok, Norma Losornio and Richard
Reibert of Broken Arrow, OK, and Thomas Glenn and wife Jane of Eufaula, OK; 2
brothers: Weldon Glenn and wife Marion of San Diego, CA and Bertis Glenn of
Stillwater, OK; 1 sister: Winnie Phibbs and husband George of Stillwater, OK; 9
grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and
friends. Marvin moved to Henryetta in 1939 to work with the Civilian
Conservation Corp. and met the love of his life, Christina. He said "I'm going
to marry that girl" the first time he laid eyes on her. They were married 64
years until her death in 2004. He served in the US Navy on the aircraft carrier
USS Copahee during WWII and was one of 4 brothers serving at that time in the
armed forces. Marvin was a Master Craftsman Mason and his workmanship is evident
all over Henryetta and surrounding communities: podium for the library Doughboy
Statue, the masonry work at the Gazebo, and HHS arch at the Territorial Museum
Park. He was the Treasurer of the State of the International Bricklayers Union
for fifty years, longtime member of the VFW and American Legion. The Henryetta
First Christian Church recognized him with designation of Deacon Emeritus in
2007 and Henryetta recognized him as Henryettan of the Year in 1991. Marvin will
be remembered also for his outstanding garden which was attended to with help
from his friend Lloyd Becker, which fed not only him and Christina and Lloyd and
Leta, but was enjoyed by all his family and friends as well. He missed his
gardening after his move to the Plantation House in Okmulgee in 2006. Otherwise,
his years at the Plantation House were happy years and many thanks to the staff
there and to the many friends who visited him there. He was a great husband,
father, brother, Christian, and gentleman who will be sorely missed. Services
for Marvin will be at the First Christian Church in Henryetta at 11:00am on
Saturday, January 16, 2010. Officiating will be Pastor Kris Denning. Interment
will follow at the Westlawn Cemetery under the direction of the Shurden Funeral
Home of Henryetta.
THOMAS EUGENE GLENN
Thomas was the son of Marvin and Christina (Davidson) Glenn. He grew up in
Henryetta and graduated from Henryetta High School with the Class of 1965.
Following high school, he attended Northeastern State College and graduated in
1969 with a bachelor of arts degree in accounting. He met Jane Davenport in
February 1969 and they were married May 24, 1969, in Pryor. In the fall of 1969,
he joined the United States Army. Following his service, he joined the Internal
Revenue Service as an agent. He worked in Tulsa, Washington, D.C., Colorado
Springs, Colo. and Denver. In 1981, he joined the RAM Company in McAlester as
their comptroller. He served as a McAlester councilman and as the mayor of
McAlester from April 1990 to April 1992. He also worked his private CPA
practice, Glenn & Associates, for more than 25 years. He was a member of
Lakewood Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, Jane, of the home; son,
Justin Glenn and Cheryl Kinne, of McAlester; daughter, Joy Milligan and husband,
Will, of McAlester. Also, brother, Joe Glenn and wife, Barbara, of Tulsa;
sister, Norma Losornio and Richard Reibert, of Tulsa; grandchildren, Abby,
Elizabeth, Claire, Ian and William. And, father-in-law, Harold Davenport, of
McAlester, and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Christina Glenn, and mother-in-law,
Anne Davenport. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lakewood

Winnie Oleeta Phibbs passed into the Lord’s hands early Tuesday morning,
Feb. 9, 2010, in Stillwater, Okla., after a brief illness. Born on June 24,
1925, she was 84 years old at the time of her death. Services will be held
at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 15, at Sunnybrook Christian Church in Stillwater
with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Garden. Visitation with the
family will be held at Palmer Marler Funeral Home on between 2 and 4 p.m.
Sunday. Services are under the direction of Palmer Marler Funeral Home,
Stillwater. Winnie and her twin sister, Minnie, were born to Joe and Zelma
(Shiflett) Glenn outside of Duncan, Okla. Her early elementary schooling was
in county schools near Waurika and Wewoka. She attended Henryetta High
School and played clarinet in the school band. Following a family move to
Stillwater in the late 1940’s, she enrolled in Oklahoma A&M, majoring in
home economics. While attending college she played in the marching band, was
a member of the Beta Sigma Phi and worked in the Forestry Department office.
During this time, she met George Marion Phibbs and they were married on Aug.
29, 1953, at the First Christian Church in Stillwater. After a short time,
their professional careers led them to Maryland where they became solid
residents of Greenbelt for 28 years. In the early 60’s they were blessed
with two children, Carla and Cecil. Winnie, besides being an exceptional
homemaker, was employed at the University of Maryland, the National Space
Agency and Prince Georges County Public Schools. Winnie loved to cook, sew
and work with crafts. She became a proficient cake decorator, creating cakes
for many weddings and birthdays. During her years in Greenbelt, she was an
active member and officer in the local Extension Homemakers’ Club and was a
member of Greenbelt Baptist Church. In 1984, she and the family moved back
to Stillwater. Her strong love for her extended family offered her many
opportunities to provide help and comfort wherever it was needed. She loved
gathering with family and friends, playing games, traveling, OSU sports and
taking pictures of anyone who would sit still for more than 30 seconds.
Winnie is survived by her husband, George, of the home; her daughter, Carla
Phibbs, of Stillwater; her son, Cecil Phibbs and wife, Pat, of Boynton
Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Kristin (Augie) Alvarado of Merrit Island,
Fla., Bobby (Joy) Gillenwater of Norfolk, Va., and Bradley Phibbs of Boynton
Beach; two great-grandchildren, Kaelin and Aiden Alvarado; two brothers,
Bertis Glenn of Stillwater and Weldon and his wife, Marion of San Diego,
Calif.,; three brothers/sisters-in-law, Paul and JoAnn Phibbs of Stillwater,
Glen and Charlene Phibbs of Tulsa and Roger and Debra Phibbs of Hillsboro,
Mo. In addition, over 100 nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews as well
as many friends will cherish her memory. Her parents, four brothers and her
twin sister, Minnie, preceded her in death. Active pallbearers will be Joe
Marvin Glenn, Gary Casteel, Jack Stanberry, John Phibbs, Patrick Phibbs and

at 12:25 yesterday afternoon at the North Adams Hospital, where he had been
admitted Sunday. Prior to that, he had lived at the Berkshire Rest Home at 111
Bracewell Ave. The family for many years lived on Richview Avenue. He was the
son of the late Henry and Myrtle (Goldwaite) Goodermote, and attended North Adam
Schools. A machinist and coremaker by trade, he had been employed by the James
Hunter Machine Co., for more than 30 years when he retired. He was a member of
the First United Methodist Church and the Hunter Quarter Century Club. His wife,
the former Margaret Shifflette, died Sept. 19, 1953. He leaves three sisters,
Mrs. Ernest Wright of Williamstown, Mrs. Gilbert Harner of Cornwall-on-Hudson,
N. Y., and Mrs. Frank Lineberry of West Hawley, both formerly of North Adams; a
step-daughter, Mrs. George Osterhoudt of Long Beach Calif.; and many nieces and

From the union of marriage of Cledias Robert Gragg, Sr. and Martha Etta Gragg,
eight sons and one daughter were raised, Rodger being the third born. He was
born on August 26, 1940 in Haileyville, Oklahoma and died August 31, 2009 in
Muskogee, Oklahoma. He attended Haileyville Public Schools and graduated in May
of 1958. August 1, 1958 Rodger joined the U.S. Air Force and remained until
September 30, 1978, whereby he retired with full military honors. He was
assigned to numerous assignments within the Continental U.S. and also foreign
bases in countries of our allies. November 30, 1960 Rodger wed Carol Sue Mensaso,
from this union a son and two daughters were born and reared. This union was
dissolved in 1992. April 1995 Rodger and Virginia were united in marriage. These
past few years were to play out as the happiest time of his life. After Rodger's
retirement from the U.S. Air Force he went to work for the U.S. Postal service,
May 1980, he held many positions of authority. His retirement as postmaster
Webbers Falls, Oklahoma was one of his greatest achievements while performing
official duties with the postal service. Rodger loved his children,
grandchildren and step children and step grandchildren. He thought the sun rose
and set in each and everyone of them. After military retirement he went back to
school in pursuit of a college education. He attended Eastern Oklahoma State
College obtaining two degrees, Building Design and Construction and Business
Management – Middle Management. He is a Christian man believing in the Lord
Jesus. He tried hard to follow his Christian teachings in his dealings with
everyday life. He was reared thru the Haileyville Baptist Church. Rodger was a
good and decent man. Rodger belonged to the Webbers Falls Masonic Lodge. He was
a member of the McAlester Valley of Scottish Rite a 32nd Degree Mason. Survivors
include his wife Virginia Gragg of the home; son, Rodger Dean Gragg and Lisa of
Haileyville, OK; daughters, Margie Jean McElhany and Jerry of Crowder, OK,

Lexington, Kentucky - John Taylor Graham, Sr., 86 and husband of Helen
Shifflett Graham passed unexpectedly on January 15, 2021. Born to the late
John W. and Mary Elizabeth Ballard Graham on May 15, 1934 in Lexington. He
was a past member of The First Church of the Nazarene in Lexington. He
attended Bryan Station High School in the 1940s. He also attended Kentucky
Business College in Lexington. He was a U.S. Navy, Korea War veteran who
went on to a career with Irvin Industries in Lexington and retired as a
hotel manager with Cardinal Industries in 1997. His hobbies included golf,
fishing, and spending time outdoors. In addition to his wife of 67 years, he
is survived by his daughter Leslie (Jimmy) West; granddaughter Katelen
Taylor West; three brothers-in-law and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Also, a special family friend Jane Wright. Besides his parents, he was
preceded in death by his son John Taylor Graham, Jr. and two siblings, Norma

Richard D. Gray, 96, of 1038 Greene St., died Friday in
Reading Hospital, where he had been a patient for two weeks. He was the husband
of Anna May Schifflett Gray, who died in 1984. Born in Stanley, VA., he was the
son of the late David and Sallie (Cave) Gray. He was veteran of World War I and
was last employed as a factory laborer. He is survived by one son, Donald J.
Gray, Reading; one sister, Dorothy, wife of Jeff Hensley, Elkton, Va.; two
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Auman

Waterloo - Dixie Joyner Gray of Irwin County, 48, passed away on Sunday,
January 27, 2019, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00
A.M., Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at Waterloo Baptist Church with her
uncle, Rev. Donnie Wright and Dr. Jeff Pangle officiating. Burial will

graduated in 1988, from Irwin County High School and was continuing her
education at Southern Regional Technical College. She enjoyed fishing, and
having bon fires with her friends. Dixie loved her friends and family
especially her only son and grandson. In addition to her parents, she is
survived by her son; Charles Clayton (C.C.) Gray of Waterloo, her sister and
brother-in-law; Leslie and Chad Sutton of Athens, her brother and
sister-in-law; Casey and Sima Joyner of Tifton, Grandson; Mason Crumley,
niece; Calla Joyner and nephew; Jacob Joyner, numerous aunts, uncles and

Carl Edward Greene, 60, of Ruckersville, VA died on Wednesday, November 6, 2013
at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was born on September 2, 1953
in Baltimore, MD. He was the son of the late Herman Rock and Ann Beall Rock. He
is survived by his sons, Chad and Mark, wife, Cheri Greene, his sisters, Karen
Moneymaker and her husband, George, Kathy Dunn and her husband, Ed and Virginia
Lorenzi and her husband, William and his brother, Raymond Rock. The family will

RICHARD LEE GREEN JR.
Richard Lee Green Jr., 92, of Dayton, passed away Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010. Mr.
Green was born May 24, 1918, in Mount Jackson, Va., and was a son of the late
Richard Lee Green Sr. and Edna Arthur Green. Richard served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II in the South Pacific and was part of the invasion of Saipan
and Okinawa. Following the war, Mr. Green worked for Smith's Transfer for 30
years as a local deliveryman. Following his retirement, he enjoyed collecting
antiques, gardening and woodworking. He was a member of the Dayton American
Legion Post No. 27 and also attended First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg.
In April of 1940, he married Evelyn Shifflett, who preceded him in death on Feb.
12, 1998. Mr. Green is survived by a son, Charles Richard Green and wife, Ellen,
of Harrisonburg; a brother, Wayne Green of Charlottesville; two granddaughters,
June Barton and Cathy Green; one great-granddaughter, Rachel Barton; and one
stepgreat-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Richard Lee
Green, and a sister, Hazel Stickley. A graveside service will be held Wednesday,
Aug. 25, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg with
the Rev. Hollis Dodge officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from

GRIFFIN, GARY STEVEN, age 58, completed his journey in this life on Wednesday,
October 10, 2007. Gary was born July 26, 1949 in Jacksonville, FL. A graduate of
UCF, he worked in the automotive industry with Goodyear and affiliated
dealerships, most recently with Florida Tire. Gary pursued numerous artistic
hobbies, including watercolor, acrylic, mixed media and sculpture. He was an
avid gardener and his outdoor interests included hunting and fishing. A fifth
generation Floridian, Gary was a professional drummer with several area bands
during the 1960's and 70's, including The Twin Tones, The Swinging Temptations
and The Goodtime Express. He was preceded by his wife, Lynn Shiplett Griffin in
April 2006. He is survived by his daughters, Amy Griffin Perry of Seminole
County and Kimberly Anne Griffin of Atlanta, GA; grandson, Colton Cash Perry;
brothers, Ben Griffin, Jr. (Rita) of Baltimore, MD, and Kevin Griffin (Beth) of

GOSHEN — Harry Rolston Grogg, 61, of Goshen died Monday afternoon at his shop in
Goshen. Mr. Grogg owned and operated Grogg’s Small Engine Repair. He served in
the Army during World War II. He was born July 9, 1927, at Mount Clinton and was
the son of Helen Rolston Grogg Keith of Montgomery, W.Va., and the late Harry W.
Grogg. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Vallie Shifflett
Grogg of Goshen; a son, Sam Grogg of Mount Solon: four daughters, Linda Ramquist
of Harrisonburg, Tammy Campbell and Kimberly Grogg, both of Goshen, and Gina G.
McClung of Fairfield; and two grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m.
Thursday at the Sensabaugh & Zimmerman Funeral Home in Craigsville by William
Folley. Burial will be in the Goshen Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will

PAMELA JEAN COULTER GRUBE
Pamela Jean Coulter Grube , age 61, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2012 at
Nexus Specialty Hospital in The Woodlands. Pamela was born on May 16, 1951 in
Edna, Texas, to parents Gene and Naomi Shiflett Coulter. The family later moved
to Piney Point Village in the Houston Memorial area where Pamela attended Spring
Branch public schools, graduating from Memorial High School in 1968. She went on
to receive her Bachelor of Arts (Magma Cum Laude) from the University of
Houston. Pamela was active in many civic, community and charitable endeavors in
Houston before moving to Walden on Lake Conroe in 1995 where she taught high
school. Later, she worked in the legal and real estate professions in the
greater Houston area. She was most recently associated with Residential Mortgage
Services in their offices in Spring. When not working or enjoying time with her
friends and family, Pamela was an avid gardener. Pamela is survived by her
beloved son, John S. Grube III or Austin, her brother Gregory Coulter of
Houston, her brother Michael Coulter of Moyock, North Carolina, longtime
companion Al Martinez of Houston and Montgomery, her former husband, John S.
Grube, Jr. of Bellville, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as
a legion of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Naomi
Coulter, and by her brother Steven Coulter. Pamela was an intelligent,
quick-witted individual always ready to voice her opinion on any variety of
topics, sometimes to the dismay but most often to the delight of those around
her. She was a fierce advocate for the principles and causes she believed in.
Her smile and laughter were contagious. She loved her family and friends
mightily, without abandon. Her son John in particular was the lover of her life.
The world is a better place for her having passed through it and will be a
lesser place in her absence. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved
her. A Celebration of Pamela's Life will be held on Friday June 1st, at 3pm at

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Gerald M. Gumaer, 89, went to meet his Lord & Savior on Apr.
22, 2013. He was born Sept. 14, 1923 to parents Ira Wayne & Winnie Dee Gumaer in
Kendrick, OK. He graduated from Kendrick High School in 1941. After attending a
National Youth Administration radio school in Tonkawa, OK he continued his radio
training in Ft. Worth, TX. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Army
Signal Corps Service Group in Dec. 1942.Gerald served as radio & teletype
operator and cryptographer while he was stationed in Casablanca, N. Africa. He
was honorably discharged from the Army in Nov. 1945. After his Army service, he
worked for the Guthrie Register News in the Advertising Dept. and also wrote a
column but soon became interested in the pre-press activities. This led to his
occupation in pre-press operations and took him to Ft. Worth, TX, Washington,
DC, Phoenix, AZ, Los Angeles, CA, Kingman, AZ and Oklahoma City. Gerald graduated
from Oklahoma A&M College (OSU) in 1949 with a BA degree in Advertising &
Journalism. He was married in 1956 to Dallas Arlene Shifflett and they raised a
son, Judge William "Bill" Gumaer of whom he was very proud. While in CA, Gerald
served as President of the So. California Chapter of the Int'l Graphoanalysis
Society & as President of the Alhambra, CA Chapter of the Toastmasters
Club. Gerald moved to OKC in late 1981 and worked for King Graphics for 30+
years. In his life, Gerald worked in various fields including sign painting, car
sales, as Chief Civil Deputy for the Mohave Co., AZ Sheriff's Dept. & in a
copper wire plant in Kingman, AZ. Gerald is preceded in death by parents, Ira
Wayne and Winnie Gumaer, his son, William in 1997, his wife, Dallas in 1998 and
his sister, Gwen in 1999. He is survived by many family and friends including
his "adopted" family, Mike, Glory, Micah and Luke King, along with his niece and
nephew, Johnny and Gerrie Tatum of Piedmont, OK, and niece and nephew on his
wife's side, Dolen and Charlene (Cookie) Romine of Virginia. Gerald was a devout
Christian who used every opportunity to pass on the love and message of the Lord
to everyone who knew him. He was a member of Cathedral of Praise for many years
and served as usher, a job that he dearly loved. The family would like to thank
Integris Hospice House for making his last days so blessed and special for all
of us. Gerald loved the Lord, his church, OSU, the OKC Thunder and King
Graphics. Those five things filled his life with tons of pride, joy and memories
we will never forget. We love you Grandpappy and will miss you so very much. A
graveside funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday April 26, 2013 at the

Allen Glenn Graybill, Sr., 76, of Taneytown, MD, died peacefully on
Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at Carroll Hospice Dove House. Born June 15, 1944
in Uniontown, MD, he was the son of the late Daniel and Alberta Mary
(Gernert) Graybill. He was the devoted husband of Betty Jane (Shifflett)
Graybill. They were married for 57 years. Before retiring, Al was employed
at Crouse Ford for 28 years. He had previously owned and operated the Texaco
and Gulf service stations in Taneytown, and two used car lots, Taneytown
Auto Sales and Taneytown Motors. He was a member of Wakefield Valley Bible
Church, and the Littlestown Eagles. He was formerly a member and past
president of the Lions Club, and was involved in Taneytown Little League. He
was a fan of the former Baltimore Colts and the New England Patriots. Al
enjoyed going to the river, fishing, boating, collecting hats, and hanging
out with his buddies in the Breakfast Club. He was always ready to help
others, whatever the need. More than anything, he loved spending time with
his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving,
in addition to his wife Betty, are sons, Allen Glenn Graybill, Jr. and
fiancé Kris Smith of Littlestown, PA, and Dwayne Graybill and partner Robin
Lambert of Taneytown; daughter, Angela Wilhide and husband Jason of
Littlestown, PA; sisters, Shirley Bell of Jefferson and Ruth Graybill of the
Philippines; brother, Glenn Graybill of Taneytown; 7 grandchildren; 8
great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by
brothers, Harry, Larry and Dennis Graybill. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,

Rodney A. Grover, age 58
of Eaton, Ohio passed awaR Sunday morning, October 30, 2016 at Good
Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Born in Dayton, Ohio on June 17, 1958 he
was a son to the late Sanford and Shirley (Shiflet) Grover. Rod had a love
for model trains; camping; carpentry and tinkering with electronics. Above
all, he was a family man; he loved to spend time with his grandchildren and

SANFORD E. GROVER
Sanford E. Grover, 68, of West Alexandria, died unexpectedly Sunday
afternoon, Oct. 10, 2004. Born Aug. 25, 1936, in West Alexandria, he was the
son of Earl Edward and Agnes (Maggard) Grover. He served in the U.S. Marine
Corps during the Korean War. Mr. Grover retired six years ago from the
maintenance department of Mendelson's Electronics after 20 years of service.
He was a member of the NRA. He was preceded in death by his parents; a
grandson, Michael Dearth; daughter-in-law, Helen Grover; and sisters, Alice
Donaldson, Joyce Bourne and Janet Gardner. Survivors include his wife,
Shirley A. (Shiflett) Grover, whom he married June 23, 1956; children,

Grover of West Alexandria and Randall Grover of Kettering; grandchildren,

Shirley A. Grover, age 72, of
West Alexandria , OH, passed away Thursday morning, October 9, 2014 at
Greenbriar Nursing Home in Eaton, OH. Born December 14, 1937, she was a
daughter to the late Clarence and Melissa (McCarty) Shiflett. Shirley loved
sewing, crafts and woodworking, and had a love for traveling. She traveled
the United States and visited every state, besides Alaska. Shirley was a
loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and she will be deeply
missed. She is preceded in death by her husband Sanford Earl Grover who she
married on June 6, 1956; grandson Michael Dearth and sisters Bernice Reed

Bailey Forloines, who survives, of Mathias, West Virginia. On January 20, 1990,
she was united in marriage to Alan Lynn Hall, who passed away five days later on
Tuesday, April 3, 2012. Pamela is survived by a son, Tim Forloines and wife,
Julia, of Grottoes; four brothers, John B. Forloines III and wife, Martha, of
Stanardsville, William Forloines and wife, Than, of Lynnhurst, Robert Forloines
and wife, Joy, of Buckingham, and Joseph Forloines. She is also survived by five

Sept. 27, 1986, she married William "Billy" Edward Hammer, who preceded her
in death on Jan. 4, 2018. In 1988, Susie and her husband moved to the
Shenandoah Valley to raise their children. She worked at Massanutten Resort
gift shop for over 12 years and enjoyed baking and working with flowers. She
was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt and was
always known to be full of life and laughter. She is survived by her son, a
daughter, granddaughter, a brother and a sister, and numerous nieces,
nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

ELKTON - Mrs. Daisy Thomas Hammer, 64, of 99 Hill Ave., Elkton died Thursday
morning at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. She had been in ill health several
months. Mrs. Hammer was born Sept. 1, 1908 at Elkton and was a daughter of the
late Franklin and Molly Shlfflett Thomas. She was a retired employee of Blue
Bell Inc. of Elkton. On March 28, 1928 she married Robert M. Hammer, who
survives. Also surviving are two sons, Randolph T. and Robert M. Hammer Jr.,
both of Elkton, and three grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m.
Saturday at the Elkton Evangelical United Methodist Church by the Rev. J,
Reardon McKenney and the Rev. Lewis Armentrout. Burial will be In Elk Run
Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Homer Soule, Kenneth Shifflett, Randolph Hitt,
Lonnie Hale, Fred Hammer and Benny Roach Jr. The family will receive friends at

Douglas Franklin Hammer, Sr., 73, of
Elkton, passed away, Saturday, January 18, 2020, at Sentara RMH Medical
Center in Harrisonburg. Mr. Hammer was born, May 29, 1946, in Elkton, and
was the son of the late, Jesse Edward and Rosa Dean Hammer. In addition to
his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, John, Bernie, Rodney,
Owen, Billy and Wampler Hammer and four sisters, Rosalie Pryce, Janet Roach,
Doris Helfrich and Marietta Marshall. Doug was a graduate of Montevideo High
School and was a strong believer in the Lord. He enjoyed farming for most of
his life and later went on to work at Rockingham Co-op. in Elkton for many
years. While at Co-op, he enjoyed giving flowers to others as a sign of
friendship and candy to kids to make them happy. Woodworking was a great
passion of his and he could often be found whittling wood and carving pieces
into small birds. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend
who will be greatly missed. On August 27, 1973, he married Elizabeth “Libby”
Ann Hammer who survives. He is also survived by his son, Douglas “Dougie” F.
Hammer, Jr. and fiancée, Kelly Breeden of Elkton; daughter, Rosa Ann Hammer
of Elkton; brothers, Roland, Larry, Mensel and Randy Hammer; sisters, Jetta
Raynes, Wanda Comer and Margie Mayes; grandchildren, Irie “Pumpkin Seed”
Elizabeth Hammer, Madison “Maddie”, Regan and Kennedy “KK” Voight, as well
as numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m.,
Wednesday, January 22, 2020, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Burial will
follow in the family cemetery, at his family home place in Elkton. The
family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 21,

Mensel Wayne Hammer, 80, of Elkton, passed away Sept. 14,
2021, in Harrisonburg. Mr. Hammer was born April 4, 1941, in Rockingham
County and was a son of the late Jesse Edward and Rosa Dean Hammer. He
served our country in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged.
Mensel enjoyed farming, gardening, hunting and fishing. He worked for
Crompton Metals for 23 years as a machine mechanic and retired from VDOT. He
loved spending time with his devoted wife of 58 years and she was his
caregiver for the last three years. He also loved spending time with his
family and his great-grandson. On June 29, 1963, he married Dorothy "Dot"
Grimsley Hammer, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Mensel W. Hammer II
and fiancé, Lena; a daughter, Pamela Hammer; brothers, Roland, Larry, and
Randy Hammer; sisters, Margie Mayes and Wanda Comer; five grandchildren and
one great-grandson, his pride and joy, Grayson Hammer. Besides his father
and mother, he was preceded in death by siblings, John, Bernie, Rodney,
Owen, Billy, Wampler and Douglas Hammer and Jetta Raynes, Rosalie Price,
Janet Roach, Doris Helfrich and Mareta Marshall. A private graveside service
will be held at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg with Pastor Carter

Rosalie Louise Hammer Pryce, 78, a resident of
Harrisonburg, passed away Oct. 7, 2012, at her home. She had battled cancer
and diabetes for five years. She was born March 3, 1934, in Elkton, and was
a daughter of the late Jesse E. and Rosa Dean Hammer. Rosalie lived her
entire life in Pennsylvania and Virginia. She was a homemaker and attended
the Church of Solsburg and Elkton Pentecostal Church. On Aug. 21, 1954, she
married Archibald M. Pryce III, who preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1997.
She was also preceded in death by son, Archibald M. Pryce IV; stepson, Gary
Rose; and seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by son, Joseph E.
Pryce of Harrisonburg; one grandchild, Joseph E. Pryce II; brothers, Roland,
Mensel, William, Doug, Larry and Randy Hammer; sisters, Jetta Raynes, Marita
Marshall, Wanda Comer and Margie Mayes; and several nieces and nephews. A
memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at the Church
of Solsburg with Pastor Josh Shifflett officiating. Memorial contributions

William “Billy” Edward Hammer, 73, of Shenandoah, passed away Thursday, Jan.
4, 2018, at Sentara RMH Medical Center. He was born Dec. 7, 1944, in
Harrisonburg and was a son of the late Jesse E. and Rosa Dean Hammer. In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Rodney
Hammer, Owen Hammer, Wampler Hammer, John Hammer and Bernard Hammer, and
sisters, Mareta Marshal, Rosalie Pryce, Doris Ruth Helfrich and Janet Roach.
William began a lengthy career with Giant Food of Washington, D.C., in 1967
and was a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 400.
He loved spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter, and
liked fishing in his pastime. Bill is survived by his wife of 31 years, Mrs.
Hammer, whom he married on Sept. 27, 1986. In addition to his wife, he is
survived by his son, daughter, granddaughter, 5 brothers, 3 sisters, and a
great number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. on
Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton with Pastor Carter

Winston Rodney Hammer, 71, of
Grottoes, formerly of Shenandoah, passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at
Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He was born in Elkton on Sept. 6, 1937. Son of
the late Jesse Edward and Rosa Dean Hammer, he is survived by his loving
wife, Delores Mildred Hammer, whom he married on Dec. 15, 1954. Mr. Hammer
was a pipe welder for thirty-eight years; a career that led him to reside in
various states including Alaska, where he worked on the Alaskan Pipe Line.
He enjoyed playing the harmonica, hunting, traveling and camping. He was
preceded in death by a sister, Janet Hammer, and four brothers, Wampler
Hammer, Bernard Hammer, John Hammer and Owen Hammer. Funeral services will
be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton
with Pastor Wayne Wright and the Rev. Morgan Kinney officiating. Burial will

church by working in the nursery for approximately twenty years, with the
Girls in Action group, Life Fellowship Secretary, and she volunteered in the
church office. She took pleasure in being able to serve inside and outside
of her church community. Violet had a big heart full of love for all those
that she came to know. She was blessed with numerous "sons" she never had.
She loved each and everyone of them and their families very much. Her
greatest joy was when the great-grandchildren walked through her front door.

A memorial service for Dr. Howard Richard Harner, 86, of Greenville, S.C., and

1898, in Harrisonburg and was a son of the late Joseph Marion and Alphretta
Shiplett Harner. He attended Cornell University in New York and graduated from
the University of Virginia and Western Reserve School of Medicine. Dr. Harner
was a general practitioner in Los Angeles from 1929 until he retired in 1975.

Mrs. Harville was a native of Courtland ,VA, a daughter of the late Lucius Mahone and Katharine Shiflett Manry
and was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, John William "Bill" Harville who passed away September 2,
2004. Mrs. Harville was a graduate of Greensboro Women's College and was a former teacher and lifelong
homemaker. She was a member of Courtland United Methodist Church. To her family she will be remembered for her
courage, devotion to family, strength and unselfishness, who truly found joy in the simplest things in life,
most especially her love and support from her pet Bella. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Martha
M. Harville and Nancy Gomez, two sons, John William Harville, Jr. and his wife Sherrie of Statesboro, GA and

Augusta, Georgia, died peacefully in his sleep after a brief illness at the

1922, in Shelby, Virginia, the son of the late William F. Hall Sr. and Alice
Shifflet Hall. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 35 years, the late
Cornelia M. Hall, and is survived by his second wife of 30 years, the former
Mary Elizabeth Higgins. He is also survived by his sister, Iris Faye Burton; his
daughter, Suzanne Mizell and her husband, Charles Thomas Mizell; his sons,
William F. Hall III, Jeffrey S. Hall and his wife, Kathy, Kelly Hall, and David
W. Hall; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived
by four step-children, Darleen Henley, Suzanne Czechanski, Cindy Mitchum and
James Proffitt; and seven step-grandchildren. Dad grew up in Charlottesville,
graduated from Lane High School, and was a member of First United Methodist
Church. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. For
Dad's entire life he could recall vivid memories of his time in the service. He
served in the Northern Africa and European campaigns, receiving the Good Conduct
Medal, American Theater Medal, Air Medal and Victory Medal. Upon returning to
Charlottesville, Dad was employed by Trailways for 25 years as director of
tours. Dad then managed a number of hotels, including the Sheraton in
Charlottesville. Until he was 80 years old, he and Mary managed self-storage
properties before retiring to Augusta, Georgia. Dad was a people person who made
friends easily. His recall of people, places, and events was uncanny. He enjoyed
spending time with his family, reading Louis L'Amour novels and playing poker
with his friends at the VFW. His easy smile and gracious manner will be missed.
The family wishes to express its deep gratitude to all those employed at the
Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. Their dedication and
commitment to caring for Dad was commendable. The family also wishes to thank
his step-daughter, Cindy Mitchum, and his step-granddaughter, April Vozniak, who
spent many hours by his side during his final days. A graveside service will be
held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of

Ronald Hancock, 87, of Crozet, died on Friday, December 6, 2013, at his
daughters home in Ruckersville, Virginia. He was born on September 30, 1926, in
Grantsboro, North Carolina, the son of the late Dink Hancock and Mamie Hancock.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Iris Hancock; and second wife, Marie
Hancock . He is survived by his four children, Rondell Hancock and wife, Laura
of Drummonds, Tennessee, Vickie Enfield and husband, Richard of Crestview,
Florida, Susan Gearhart and husband, Bill of Ruckersville, Virginia, and Sandra
Hancock of Miami, Florida; and a step-son, Michael Shifflett of Beckley, West
Virginia. From Escort Ship SS Kimberly he watched the signing of the Peace
Treaty with Japan. He managed Hot Shoppes in Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia.
He was food manager at GE in Waynesboro and was owner of High Hatters Restaurant
in Waynesboro, Virginia. He was owner and manager for many years of Ken
Johnson's Cafeteria in Charlottesville, he also managed Keswick Country Club for
several years, and was owner and manager for several years at Pantops Dining
Room, then became broker and owner of Clover Realty for the last 40 years.

Hansbrough, age 86, of Taneytown, died Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Carroll
Hospice Dove House, after an extended illness. Born May 16, 1930 in Beldore, VA,
he was the son of the late Dewey and Sadie Shiflett Hansbrough. He was the
husband of Betty L. Stambaugh Hansbrough, his wife of 42 years. Mr. Hansbrough
served in the U.S. Army from 1955-57. He was employed with Lincoln Ladder Co. of
Westminster for 28 years. He was a member of the Hesson-Snider American Legion
Post #120 of Taneytown and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, working on
lawnmowers, tinkering and drawing pictures. In addition to his wife he is
survived by children, Reba Willman of VA; Tina Ray of Hanover, PA; Jamie Hale of
ME; Michael Hansbrough of Taneytown and Debbie Myerly of Waynesboro, PA;
numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and a brother, John Edward
Hansbrough and wife Joyce of Shenandoah, VA. He was predeceased by an infant

Church of Christ and, in Florida, Beville Road Church of Christ. She was a
loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose family always came
first. She loved all types of crafts and art including pottery, crocheting and
needlepoint. She was born Oct. 13, 1922, in Mammoth, W.Va. Preceding her in
death were her parents, Vernon and Masil Shiflett Ward; and a sister, Joe Ann
Bowman. Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Henry ?Ted? Harrah; son, Steven

husband, James J. Hart Sr., of more than 50 years, moved to Tulare in 1987. She was a cook at Alta Hospital in

Graves Cecil "Mutt" Harrison, 67, of Keezletown died Sunday morning at
Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Harrison had been ill since 1975 and in the
hospital two weeks. He was born Sept. 24, 1914, at Lacey Spring and was a son of
the late John and Birdie Flick Harrison. He had lived in the Keezletown area
since 1934 and worked as a mechanic for Bumbaugh Buick in Harrisonburg a number
of years. Mr. Harrison was a member of Keezletown United Methodist Church and
served nine months overseas with the Army during World War II. He also was an
original member of the Valley Saddle Club. On Sept. 1,1934, he married the
former Edna Armentrout, who survives. Also surviving are a son, S. V. "Buck"
Harrison of McGaheysville; three sisters, Mabel Higgs of Rt. 2, Harrisonburg,
Alma Henton of Rt. 6, Harrisonburg and Charlotte Baker of Harrisonburg; a
brother, Everette "Shine" Harrison of Rt. 3, Harrisonburg; and two
grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday at Keezletown United
Methodist Church by the Rev. Dennis Perry and the Rev. Ross Speicher. Burial

Edna V. "Snookie" Harrison, 88, of Keezletown, died
Monday, Jun. 14, 2004, at Harrisonburg Health & Rehabilitation Center. Mrs.
Harrison was born Aug. 24,1915, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of
the late George Kenny and Sarah Catherine Wise Armentrout. She lived in
Rockingham County all of her life and was valedictorian of her graduating class
at Keezletown High School. She was a member of the Keezletown United Methodist
Church. On Sept. 1, 1934, she married Graves Cecil "Mutt" Harrison, who preceded
her in death Jan. 3,1982. She is survived by a son, S.V. "Buck" Harrison of
McGaheysville; two brothers, Norman Ozzie Armentrout of Harrisonburg and Charles
William "Bill" Armentrout of Keezletown; two grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. The Rev. David Breeden
will conduct a graveside service 2 p.m. Thursday at the Keezletown Cemetery.

Annie Brown Hatch, 91, of Stanardsville, and formerly of Elkton, passed away
Sunday April 7, 2013 at The Harbor at Renaissance of Greene County, where
she had received loving care for the past 12 years. Mrs. Hatch was born
September 23, 1921 in Sperryville to the late Newton M. and Florence
Courtney Brown. She was preceded in death by her sister, Frances Brown
Stevens. Annie graduated from Elkton High School in 1941 and later moved to
Washington D.C. where she resided for many years. She worked for National
Coal Association, where she retired after 38 years. Following her retirement
she returned to Elkton. She was a member of Evangelical United Methodist
Church in Elkton. In 1943 Annie married Robert Thomas Hatch, who preceded
her in death. Survivors include nieces (loved as daughters), June Stevens
Monger and husband, Kenneth of Elkton, Joy Stevens Wampler and husband,
Stanley of Warrenton, NC, Jackie Stevens Walke and husband, Herb of Richmond
and Judy Stevens Brushwood and husband, Richard also of Richmond, as well as
a number of great nieces and nephews. The Rev. Anne M. Sisson and the Rev.

Our Mother, Lillie Crawford Hawkins, age 86, entered eternal life in the
evening hours of May 8, 2020. She was born July 17, 1933, and grew up in the
Berrytown section of Elkton and was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and
Georgianna Lawson Crawford. She was a former member of St. Stephen's
Episcopal Church and graduated from McGaheysville High School in 1950. She
retired from General Electric in Waynesboro as well as provided care in her
home for the elderly following her retirement. She married Charles J.
Hawkins on Sept. 14, 1951, and they shared 64 years together before his
death on Oct. 31, 2015. She is also preceded in death by a son, Charles J.
Hawkins Jr., who died Dec. 5, 1956. She is preceded in death by her
brothers, Robert, John and Lloyd Crawford and sisters, Ethel Meadows, Grace
Meadows and Ruth Pence. She is survived by one sister, Joyce Potter.
Surviving children are Cathy Murphy, Joan Blakey, Jeffrey Hawkins, and
Jennifer Steele who all loved her and will miss her dearly. Surviving
grandchildren are Joseph (JJ) Murphy, Chauncey Blakey, Stefonia
Blakey-Mason, Heather Hawkins-Hoehne, Kori Steele, and Kala Drake.
Great-grandchildren surviving are Laila Blakey, Juliet, Izzi, and Beau
Mason, Jackson Hawkins, Crimson, Harper and Eden Steele, and Kayson Drake.
Mom was an avid gardener with a passion for flowers at her home. She was
also musically talented in that she could play a variety of instruments by
ear and had even tried her hand at songwriting in her younger years. She
enjoyed a variety of hobbies including crocheting, cooking and baking,
writing poetry, and taking care of her fur babies. Over the years, many
stray animals found their way to her home and she always gave them a place
to stay with care. Her current fur babies, Rudy and Spence, have lost their
best friend. The Rev. Sarah Bailey will conduct the funeral service at 3:30
p.m. Sunday, May 17, 2020, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Interment will
follow at Elk Run Cemetery. There will be no public viewing. In keeping with

death by his father, Flemming (Pete) Hawley, brothers Frank Crawford, Butch
Hawley and Rickey Hawley, sisters, Patricia Shifflett and Wanda Brake.
Jeffrey was raised in the beautiful country side of Keswick, Virginia and
self-employed. He loved the outdoors, working on automobiles and equipment.
His talents were too many to list just one. It would be most fitting to say,
Jeffrey was, "a jack of all trades". He is survived by his daughter, Cortney
Lee Hawley of Gordonsville, Virginia, His mother, Helen C. Hawley of
Keswick, Virginia, sisters, Doris Morris, Mary Shifflett, Helen Craig, Pearl
Stout, Lisa Shifflett and Brenda McKenzie, brothers, Arnold Crawford, Roger

WEYERS CAVE — James Henry "Jimmy" Hayes Jr., 71,
husband of Faith "Faye" (Shiplett) Hayes of 117 Wayside Drive passed away
Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2011, at Augusta Health in Fishersville. He was born July 20,
1940, in Staunton, a son of the late James Henry Hayes Sr. and Mary Bell (Toman)
Hayes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy
Hayes. Jimmy was the owner and operator of J&P Fencing. He was a member of the
Staunton and Verona Moose Lodges and the Staunton Eagles. He was a drummer with
the band "Jim Hayes and Country Rebels" and the "Second Time Around." Jimmy was
a Redskins fan, a NASCAR race fan, liked playing poker, enjoyed boating and
having a "large time". Surviving, in addition to his wife of five years, are two
sons, James H. Hayes III of Richmond and Dustin Hayes of Corolla, N.C.; a
special niece of whom he raised, Judy Johnson of Leesburg; a stepson, Mike Wimer
and his wife, Karen, of Fishersville; a stepdaughter, Terisa Brainard and her
husband, David, of Middletown, Conn.; two sisters, Betty (Hayes) Berry of the
Plaza Apartments and Nancy (Hayes) Whitesell and her husband, Tom, of Staunton;
four step-grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren; a number of nieces and
nephews; a special friend and mother of his children, Barbara Hayes, and close

Joe Larry Hawk, son of Mrs. Frances E. Bruegman of Wheatland, Wyo. and George B.
Hawk of Sheridan, Mo., departed this life in the Veterans hospital in Cheyenne
on 9 October 1964. Joe Larry was born 27 Apr 1944 at Sheridan, Mo. He was 20
years of age at the time of his death. Joe was a private first class in the
U.S. Marines, having been stationed in Hawaii at the time he became ill with
leukemia. On 30 April 1964, he received an honorable retirement from the Marine
Corps. Since that time, Joe had been a patient at the Veterans' hospital in
Cheyenne, with frequent leaves to visit his home at Wheatland. Joe is survived
by his mother and step-father, J.G. Bruegman, and father and step-mother of
Missouri; two sisters, Mrs. Donna Jean Kukuchka of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Wanda
Lou Drusch of Ft. Worth, Tex.; a half brother, Gary Hawk and a half-sister,
Alice Hawk, both of Sheridan, Mo.; a step-sister, Jacqueline Bruegman, Portland,
Ore.; a nephew, Brent Lee Weatherwax and three nieces, Beth Ann Weatherwax,
Kathryn Drusch, and Toni Lynn Kukuchka. A half brother, Duane Wesch preceded him
in death 18 years ago. Serving as pallbearers were Joe's cousins, all members of
the Armed Forces, Alan Kirchke, Navy; Donald Richardson, Army; Dean Richardson,
Paratroopers; Capt. James Ross Hawk, Army; A1/c Thomas J. McCartney, Air Force,
and Pfc. James I. McCartney, Army. Memorial services were conducted by the Rev.
Lynn Hawkins of the Southern Baptist Temple on 12 October at the Schrader Chapel
in Wheatland. Organist for the service was a cousin, Mrs. Nancy McCartney of
Orlando, Fla. James Bohl was the soloist singing "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere"
and "The Lord's Prayer". Military honors were conducted at the graveside by the
Wheatland Chapter of the VFW Post 3558.

at 2 p.m. Mrs. Helfrich was born Nov. 8, 1942, in Elkton, daughter of the
late Jesse and Rosa Dean Hammer. Surviving are her husband, Herman L.
Helfrich of Front Royal; four sons, David Helfrich of Alexandria, Ron
Helfrich of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Herman Helfrich II of Front Royal, and

Marion - Carolyn Faye Henderson, 74 of rural Marion, died unexpectedly
Monday morning August 31, 2020 at her home. She was born February 27, 1946
in Marion to the late Lemuel Van Buren and Nora Faye (Shifflet) Thacker. She
was also preceded in death by her husband, Ira "Bill" Henderson, they were
married in 1993 and he died June 11, 2020. Also preceding her in death were
siblings: Lowell "Punk" Thacker, Gary Thacker and Rosie Roush. Carolyn was a
1964 graduate of the Harding High School. She had worked many years as a
clerk at the former Richwood Cardinal. But she was a true homemaker at
heart, she loved taking care of her family, tending to her flowers, animals
and garden. She cherished the time she was able to spend with her grandkids.
Carolyn was an avid reader, she enjoyed music, crossword puzzles and OSU and
Cleveland Browns football. There was always a special spot in her heart for
going to the Beach. Surviving is her children: Chris (Jim) Thomas of
Marietta, Georgia and Craig (Laura) Carey of New Bloomington Grandchildren:
Nathan and Evan Thomas, Hannah Ruth Loya and Wingate Carey Sisters: Kitty
Hartman and Velma (Lynn) Thacker-Clabaugh both of Marion Many nieces and

Waynesboro - Joyce Ann (Claytor) Henderson, 74, of Buckboard Road,
Waynesboro, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2020 in Augusta Nursing
and Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville. Mrs. Henderson was born in
Waynesboro on June 8, 1945, a daughter of the late Delbert David and
Gertrude (Shifflett) Claytor. Joyce was a member of Rejoicing Life Church
and was active with the Rejoicing Life Food Pantry. She was an avid corn
hole player, enjoyed playing cards, doing word search puzzles, and in her
younger days playing softball. In addition to her parents she was preceded
in death by two brothers, David Mitchell Claytor and Billy Claytor, and a
sister Joan Claytor. She was the last surviving member of her family.
Surviving are two sons, Jeffrey Wayne Henderson and his wife Gina of Stuarts
Draft, and Jamie Henderson of Waynesboro; a daughter, Rhonda Kay Rodeffer
and her husband Darrin of Fishersville; six grandchildren, Seth, Morgan,
Brett, Cory, Tiffany, and Heather; and six great-grandchildren, Layla,
Skyleigh, Coral, Aralynne, Parker, and Benjamin. A Celebration of life will
be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2020 in the Rejoicing Life

Director of Business Development for Tyco, from which he retired with over 30
years of service and received the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also
actively involved in land development, the Hess Family Farm and for three years,
along with his wife, owned the Crossroads Café in Grantville. Surviving are his
wife of 46 years Carole A. (Long) Hess; sons Donald E., husband of Cynthia Hess

Nancy passed away on Friday, November 8, 2019 at Londonderry Village. Born on
December 30, 1931 in the Hershey Hospital to John W. Henry, Sr. and Lucille
Hazel Mae (Shifflett) Henry, Nancy grew up in Union Deposit where she made
lasting friendships which she recalled with much fondness. Nancy's passing
brings to a close a generation of Henrys having been preceded in death by her
brother John W. Henry, Jr. and numerous cousins. Nancy graduated from Hershey
High School, class of 1949. She was a proud 49'er and participated in the band
front supporting the undefeated football team and one of its players, John
Alger, her future husband. Nancy held lifelong friendships with The Card Club,
made up of her closest girlfriends from the class of '49. Rumor has it that they
stopped playing cards around the time their kids reached Junior High School age
as talking was more fun than playing cards. The remaining members continued to
meet for lunches until recently. Nancy's eyes would always light up at the
mention of Card Club. John and Nancy were married on July 13, 1952, at the Union
Deposit EUB church. Nancy became a fulltime wife at that time leaving her job at
the Department of Military Affairs in Harrisburg. She was the rock of the
family, supporting her husband and raising three children. Nancy gladly accepted
this role while John was active as a farmer, church leader, and longtime school
board member. Her children learned to appreciate how much she sacrificed to
provide a wonderful home. Nancy's childhood was not perfect, however, she was
blessed with a mother who worked at Hershey Chocolate for over 30 years to
provide for her children. Times might have been lean but the Henry children
always had enough to get by, especially when it came to stylish clothing. Nancy
continued this tradition with her children. She was determined that her "farm
kids" would always be dressed well. Her children recall fondly shopping trips to
the big cities of Lebanon and Harrisburg which included lunches and visits to
Wertz Candy Shop for Caramel Corn. Nancy is survived by her children, Steven
(Susan) Alger, Benson (Pam) Alger, Amy (Rev. Mark) Irvin; her grandchildren,
Brooks (Ashley) Alger; Hollis Alger, James Alger, Jonathan (Katie) Alger,
Jennifer (Craig) Wiley; her great-grandchildren, Henry and Audrey Alger;
brother-in-law Rev. Earl (Nancy) Alger and family of Hingham, MA; and many
cousins. A celebration of life ceremony will be held on Saturday, November 16,
2019 beginning at 5:00 PM at the Di Matteo Worship Center of Londonderry Village
led by The Rev. Dennis W. Garrison. A light buffet will be provided. Burial will
be private. The family wishes to thank the staff of Londonderry Village, Grane
Hospice, and Home Instead of Lebanon County for their extraordinary,

Herndon Jr. He owned and operated Herndon's Exxon in Barboursville from 1978
to 2004. He loved working as a mechanic and he was a car enthusiast. In
addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Carolyn Hughes Herndon;
two sons, John Herndon and wife, Dawn, and Josh Herndon and wife, Emily; two
sisters, Brenda Lloyd and Bonnie H. Morris (David Shifflett); four

Sunday, July 22, 2012, at her residence. She was born October 5, 1916, in
Roopville, Georgia to Robert Arnold and Mellie (Shiflette) Cater. Mrs. Hester
married John Edward Hester June 2, 1940, in Phoenix City, Alabama. She was an
avid bowler for 60 years up to the age of 93. She was a homemaker, loving wife,
mother and grandmother. She volunteered with the hospital auxiliary in
California during her husbands military career. Mrs. Hester is survived by her

Wilburn Hickman. She moved to Chattanooga in 1948 and then on to Atlanta,
Ga. She worked for Bell Telephone Company for over thirty years. She loved

OSWEGO — Evelyn A. Hildman, 70, of 502 Pathfinder Court, Fulton, died Sunday at
A. L. Lee Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Hildman was a native of
the Watertown area and lived in Syracuse for 33 years. She also lived in
Pennellville for 15 years. She moved to Fulton in 1991. Mrs. Hildman worked as a
production worker for the Easy Washer Corp. in Syracuse and for Victory Markets
as a meat wrapper. She retired in 1960 because of a disability. Her first
husband, Virgil Shifflett, died during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.

Craigsville - Arnold "Red" Elwood Hildebrand, 85, of Craigsville, Virginia went
to be with the Lord on Monday, January 29, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was
born October 31, 1932 in Charlottesville, Virginia, the son of the late Harry
McKinley Hildebrand and Dorothy Mae Shifflett Hildebrand. Elwood served his
country in the US Army, and was a proud Veteran and member of the VFW. He was a
dedicated and hard worker in construction as a foreman for his entire career. He
took pride in his garden, rebuilding cars, was a skilled carpenter, and enjoyed
TV westerns. He was a faithful member of the Estaline Valley Church of the
Nazarene, and was a long time and honored volunteer at the Craigsville Food
Pantry. He was a great Dad and beloved Papa. He is survived by his wife, Stella
May Wade Hildebrand, who he was united in marriage with on June 6, 1959;
children, Joy Gum, Hope Gillespie, Faith McDonald; grandchildren, Travis,
Rachel, and Makayla Hostetter, Morgan McDonald; a special son-in-law, Barry Gum;
1 brother; and two furry children, Peaches and Teddy. Elwood was preceded in
death by his parents, 5 brothers, and 3 sisters. A Celebration of Life will be
conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday February 2, 2018 at Estaline Valley Church of the
Nazarene with Pastor Billy Curry officiating. The family will receive friends
immediately after the service at the church and at his home all other times.

STEWART PRESTON HIGHBERG
After a hard-fought battle with PCA, Stewart Person Highberg of Houston,
Texas passed away on (February 3, 2023) while in Hospice Care at the age of
70. Stewart was born on August 16, 1952, in Port Arthur, Texas. He was the
son of John R. Highberg Sr. and Margaret Elizabeth (Shiflet). Stewart
married Dorothy N. (Moseley) at the Winnie Assembly of God in June of 1973.
Following his graduation from East Chambers High School, Stewart joined the
first ROTC class at Lamar University in Beaumont. Upon graduating from Lamar
University, he served in the United States Air Force where he became a Jet
Fighter Pilot. Stewart served his country for 28 years achieving the rank of
Colonel. He served during Desert Storm where he assisted in combat strategy
and led air missions earning the Distinguished Flying Cross for delivering
his crew and aircraft to safety after sustaining several missile strikes.
After retiring from the Air Force, Stewart continued to serve his country at
the NSA, the VA, and studied in the United States War College. Stewart was
passionate about serving his Lord. As a lifelong member of the Church of
Christ, he served as Deacon, Elder, and Minister at several churches. One of
his favorite things about being a minister was joining couples in happy
matrimony. Stewart and Dot also participated in and led mission trips around
the United States and internationally. Stewart was an avid hunter. He loved
his family and his hunting dogs. He also enjoyed wood working and building
furniture pieces. An avid reader, Stewart was always studying the history of
the world, and the history of the Church. Stewart is survived by his spouse,
Dorothy Highberg, his children, Sean C. Highberg and wife, Vanessa and their
children, Michael, Quinn, Faith, Paige, Colin, Ewan, and Graeme, Kyle R.
Highberg, his wife, Amanda and children, Jackson, Albanie, and Annabelle,
his sister Sarah H Lambert and her husband Joel, their children, Jennifer,
Abigail, and grandson, John Paul, his brothers, Haywood N. Highberg and his
children, Elijah, and Cheyenne, and Mickey Highberg and his children, Aaron,
Brandon, and Rowen, and brother in law, Roy Moseley. Preceded in death by
his brother, John Ralph Jr., his mother, Margaret (Shiflet), father, John R.

Hattie Frances "Sissy" Skinner Hill, 85, of
Harrisonburg, Virginia, passed away Monday, June 18, 2018. She was born in
Harrisonburg, VA on March 26, 1933, and was a daughter of the late William
Franklin and Mary Magdalene (Weaver) Skinner. Frances retired as Chief
Deputy Commissioner of Revenue for Rockingham County following 48 years of
service. She attended Mount Zion Church, which met at Bellaire at Stone
Port. On December 26, 1956, she married Lyle Jennings Hill in Dayton,
Virginia, who preceded her in death on September 20, 2002. They were married
from 1956 to 1984. She is survived by two daughters, Lori J. Clouse of
Harrisonburg and husband, Rene’ Clouse, of Port Republic, and Jennifer Lynn
“Ginger” Rosen and fiancé, Michael Howard, of Timberville; her grandson,
Jase Tanner Clouse and girlfriend, Alyssa “Jimmy” Francis of Harrisonburg
and a brother, Robert “Bob” Skinner of Richardson, Texas. Many nieces and
nephews, great-nieces and nephews, along with friends and nursing caregivers
also survive. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June

Jennings Hill, 78, a resident of 9947 Stony Point Road, Harrisonburg, died
September 20, 2002, at his home. He had been in failing health. Mr. Hill was
born October 27, 1923, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Ward
E. and Irene Shifflett Hill. Mr. Hill served three years in the United
States Aircorp during World War II (1943-46) in England, France and Germany,
with decorated citations, Good Conduct Medal, European, Africa, Middle
Eastern Theater Ribbon, and World War II Victory Ribbon. There were the
highlights of his time there. He was a past member of Rion-Bowman VFW Post
632. He was employed as a truck driver for Mason-Dixon and Smith Transfer.
He then worked for the Harrisonburg City Transit for many years. On December
26, 1956, he married the former Hattie Frances Skinner, who survives. Also
surviving are two daughters, Lori Jean Clouse, Port Republic, and Jennifer
Lynn Rosen, Harrisonburg; three sisters, Rachel Garcia, Parksley, VA., Naomi
Neff, Stephens City, and Fern Mohler, Singers Glen; one grandson, Jase
Tanner Clouse. Mr. Hill was preceded in death by three brothers, Willard E.
"Bill" Hill, Warren W. "Bud" Hill, and Ward E. "Jake" Hill, Jr. Funeral

Korean War, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and an

Willard Eston Hill, 65, of Rt. 3, Harrisonburg died of an apparent heart attack
Tuesday morning at his home. Mr. Hill was born Aug. 4, 1917 in Rockingham County
and was a son of the late Ward E. and Irene-Lee Shifflett Hill. He had worked at
Valley Blox about 18 years and was a member of the Cherry Grove United Methodist
Church at Linville. On Oct. 26, 1935, he married the former Mamie Jane Grogg,
who survives. Also surviving are four sons, Robert, Kenneth and Carroll Hill,
all of Harrisonburg, and William Hill of Keezletown; four daughters, Rachel
Davis and Phyllis McDonaldson, both of Harrisonburg, Margie Stroop of Singers
Glen and Elaine Whetzel of Linville; two brothers, Lyle Hill of Bridgewater and
Warren Hill of Linville; three sisters, Naomi Neff of Stephens City, Fern Mohler

Mr. Clifford O. "Joe" Hines,
age 86, of 3B Cross Creek Drive, Rome, passed away on June 1, 2004 at a
local medical center.Mr. Hines was born of March 15, 1918 in Atco, Georgia,
the son of Walter Hines and Lois Shiflett Hines. He worked for the City of
Rome from 1963 until 1984 as a department foreman. Mr. Hines was a gardener,
giving away most of what he raised. He was an avid fisherman and Braves fan
and coached youth activities in little league baseball and football. He was
a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. Mr. Hines was a member
of the Cherokee Masonic Lodge #66 F & AM and of the McDonald's afternoon

CRAIGSVILLE -- Richard Thomas Hodge, 61, of
Craigsville, went to be with his heavenly Father on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010,
unexpectedly while working outside at his residence. He was born on Oct. 19,
1949, to the late Lonnie N. and Lovisa F. Hodge. Richard was a loving husband,
father, grandfather and friend to many. He is survived by his wife of 34 years,
Linda Shiflett Hodge; a daughter, Miranda Hall and husband, Richard, of Goshen;
three grandchildren, Keaton, Nathan and Kaitlyn Hall of Goshen; two sisters,
Mavis Plecker and husband, Jim, of Millboro, Virginia and Sandra Wingerd and
husband Dan of Dayton, Virginia; two brothers, John Hodge and wife, Bonnie, of
Millboro and Allen and wife, Ruth, of Bolvia, South America; a number of nieces
and nephews including a special nephew, Eric Shiflett; a special uncle, Bill

Richard was retired from VDOT. He also worked as a security guard at Wayne Tex
and Dupont, where he retired as a corporal in 2000. He was also a veteran of the
United States Marine Corp. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m.,
Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at Goshen Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Reese and
Tyler Clem presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. At his

to meet his mother in Heaven on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the age of 22. He was
at home with his faithful best friend, Buddy. Blake was born in Odessa, Texas,
to Bobby Joe Hogue and Susan Kathleen Weeks on July 2, 1990. Blake was preceded

grew up in Odessa and Lake Ivy, Growing up he had a great love for hunting and
fishing. During hunting season he filled the freezer with plenty of meat and
took great pride in his cooking skills. He loved to fire up the bar-b-que pit
and cook for everyone. Blake was all “boy.” In school he played sports but
didn't sign up for just one sport. He wanted to p1ay them all. Football was his
favorite hut he played basketball and soccer as well. He was a free spirited
child and loved to joke around and be silly. Not many pictures were taken when
he didn't have a smile from ear to ear. Later, Blake worked in the oilfield and
enjoyed climbing to the top of the derrick. He wanted to be able to see as much
of Texas as he could and the higher he climbed... the more he could see. We will
miss his bright smile and his loving heart. Funeral arrangement are being

Mary-Lee Hobbs Steel, 56, of Freedom Crider Road, New Sewickley Township, died
unexpectedly, Thursday, March 26, 1998, in her home. Born July 16, 1941, in
Georgetown, Pa., a daughter of J. Bruce Hobbs, of Georgetown, and Ada
Shifflette, of Moon Township, she was a resident of New Sewickley Township since
1985, previously living in Arlington, Va. Mrs. Steel was an employee of JoAnn
Fabrics, Cranberry Township, and a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church of
Lovi, where she was the organist and president of the Church Women. She was a
graduate of South Side High School and Penn State University, where she was a
life member of the Alumni Association and a member of the Tri Sigma Sorority.
She was also a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. A member of the
Frankfort Springs Grange, she was the activity director of the Beaver Pomona
Grange; a member of the Pennsylvania State Grange, and had served as a delegate
to two National Grange conventions. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are
her husband, William A. Steel; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Adam B. and
Lisa Steel, Silver Springs, Md.; William H. Steel, New Hope, Pa., and Charles J.
and Angela Steel, Pittsburgh; one grandson, Adam J. Steel, Silver Springs; one
brother and sister-in-law, James B. II and Maquitta Hobbs, Canton, Ohio, and two
sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and John Dooley, Gallatin, Mo., and Kaye and
Edward Napolitano, Lovettsville, Va. Friends will be received today from 2 to 9

Canton - Mary Sue Holland Shumolis, age 89 passed away on Wednesday, July 24,
2013 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood
County, she was the daughter of the late Fleet Collier and Alma Shiflet Holland.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Thurston Holland.
She was a lifelong member of Canton First Baptist Church where she was past
president of the WMU and member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She is
survived by a daughter, Susan Shumolis of Clyde and a son, Charles Shumolis of
Asheville. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July
26, 2013 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Bill

70, of McGaheysville, passed away Friday, June 29, 2012, at her home. Betty was
born in Rockingham County on March 24, 1942, and was a daughter of the late Leon
and Kathleen (MacInturf) Allen. On July 1, 1960, she was united in marriage to
Kenneth L. Holloway Sr., who survives. Betty was a homemaker and attended Blue
Ridge Independent Church. She loved playing Bingo at McGaheysville Fire
Department, and enjoyed spending time in her rose gardens. Betty was preceded in
death by a daughter, Janet Louise; three sisters, Edna Crawford, Patricia
Deavers and Janet Dean; and three brothers, Harry Sr., Fred and Ralph Allen.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth L. "Cookie" Holloway Jr. and wife, Sherrie,
and William G. "Willie" Holloway and wife, Pat; a sister, Pearl Voiles; three
brothers, Lester Allen, Carl Allen and Chester Allen. Betty had five
grandchildren, Kevin, Lea-Ann, Kelly, Katie and Chris; a great-granddaughter,
Abby; a stepgranddaughter, LaTisha; two stepgreat-grandsons, Camden and Maddox;
and numerous nieces and nephews, including a special relationship with
great-nephews, JD, Robert and Brian Deavers, and special niece, Sherry Allen. At
Betty's request her body will be cremated and her ashes will be interred at a

Jack Kenard Holloway Sr., 69, of Port Republic passed away Saturday, Aug. 25,
2012, at his home. Jack was born Feb. 14, 1943, and was a son of the late Howard
Jackson and Cleo Katherine (Alexander) Holloway. Jack served with honors in the
U.S. Army 101st and 82nd Airborne divisions in Germany, South Asia and during
the Dominican Republic crisis. He was a retired staff sergeant with the U.S.
Army National Guard. He also retired from GE/Genicom in Waynesboro. He was
quartermaster and founding member of Grottoes VFW Post 4698, which was formed in
1969. Jack attended Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Lynnwood. On Jan. 6,
1964, Jack was united in marriage to Patricia (Shifflett) Holloway, who
survives. In addition to his wife, Pat, Jack is survived by a daughter, Darla
Sue Moomaw and husband, Steve, of Woodstock; a son, Jack Holloway Jr. of Port
Republic; two grandchildren, Sarah Catherine Moomaw and Jack “Brody Alexander
Holloway. Jack is also survived by two brothers, Carson Holloway and wife,
Kelly, of Grottoes and Gary Howard Holloway of Staunton; a sister, Linda Kelley

HOWELL, Darrell L. "Bo" Passed away in his home on February 11, 2017 in
Springfield, OH at the age of 58 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on April 11, 1958 in Staunton, VA to Melvin and Juanita "Ruby"
(Shifflett) Howell. He was a 1976 graduate of Fort Defiance High School. Bo
loved his profession as an air traffic controller and served in the United
States Air Force until his retirement in 2001. After his retirement, he
continued to work in the job that he loved for the Department of Defense. During
his military and DOD careers, he served in Panama, Bosnia, and numerous bases
throughout the United States. He was an avid golfer and especially enjoyed the
Thursday night league at Rocky Lakes Golf Course. Bo was a dedicated fan of the
University of Virginia sport's programs and was rarely seen without a UVA logo
on his hat or shirt, or a piece of candy in his pocket. He was loved and will be
missed by surviving partner, Amy Bierfeldt; daughter, Victoria "Torri" Howell;
mother, Juanita "Ruby" (Shifflett) Howell; sisters, Sandra (Robert) Puffenberger
and Deborah (Denis) Umidi; nieces, Stephanie Furr, Christie Flesher (Katrina
Weiland), Randi (Derek) Almond; several aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces,
and a great-nephew. He is predeceased by his role-model and father, Melvin. Bo
lived his life performing random acts of kindness and encouraged others to pay

his two daughters and son-in-law, Christin and Josh Eisenhower of Adel, and
Natasha Howze of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Katelynne Nitschke of Statenville,
Michael Bowen of Valdosta, and Emily and Audrey Eisenhower, both of Adel; his
mother, Laqueta Shiflett Howze of Adel; two brothers, Phil Howze of Valdosta and
Keith Howze of Hahira; a sister, Kathy Lewis of Barney; maternal grandmother,
Mrs. Monzelle Shiflett; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins;
and a special friend, "Little Un." He was preceded in death by his father, Roy
Nelson Howze; a grandson, Hayden Eisenhower; maternal grandfather, Cliff "Papa"
Shiflett; and paternal grandparents, Grover and Thelma Howze. Funeral services
for Mr. Howze were conducted Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 11 am in the Chapel of
Boone Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Studstill officiating. Interment followed at
Woodlawn Cemetery Annex in Adel. The family received friends Wednesday morning
one hour prior to the service at Boone Funeral Home, 1804 S. Hutchinson Ave.
(U.S. Hwy. 41 South) in Adel. Pallbearers for Mr. Howze's service were Jeremy
Howze, Josh Eisenhower, Ty Howze, Steven Abbott, Tony Garcia, Will Howze and
Jeffrey Law.. Special selections played during the funeral service were "One Day

Pocahontas Lodge. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Joyce leach,
Middlesboro; two sons, harry Shifflett, Pontiac, Mich. and J. B. Shifflett,
Albuquerque, New Mexico; and eight grandchildren. Services will be held Tuesday,
may 31, at 2 p. m. at the Fulton & Essary Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Boyd

FORT DEFIANCE - Herbert Samuel Hulvey, 80, of Rt. 1, Fort Defiance died Saturday
at King's Daughters' Hospital in Staunton, where he was a patient since
Thursday. He was born Oct. 27, 1903, in Augusta County and was a son of the late
George Eyler and Lottie Ethel Stover Hulvey. Mr. Hulvey was a graduate of
Augusta Military Academy and Dunsmore Business College. He was a member of
Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and trustee and
was head of a church development fund. For 30 years, Mr. Hulvey was assistant
postmaster and a merchant in Fort Defiance. He served as postmaster from 1951
until his retirement in 1967. Mr. Hulvey was a member of Mount Sidney Ruritan
Club 31 years, with 11 years of perfect attendance. In September, he was awarded
a life membership. He also was a member and past president of
Waynesboro-Staunton Antique Car Club and co-founder and past president of Old
Dominion Packard Club. He also belonged to other classic car clubs. Mr. Hulvey
was a member of Ad and Astra Honorary Society of Augusta Military Academy.
Surviving are his wife, Louise Shiflett Hulvey; a daughter, Christie Fulton of
Corvallis, Ore.; and three grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted
2 p.m. Tuesday at Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church Cemetery by the Rev. James
M. Hovland and Dr. James R. Kennedy. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m.
today at the Hamrick Funeral Home and at the Hulvey home at other times. The
family said that contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society,
Staunton-West Augusta County Unit.

Mary Melissa Farmer Humphrey, 54, of Waynesboro, Va. passed away Thursday, April
2, 2015. She was born in Richmond on May 13, 1960 to the late Elvin D. Farmer
and Christine Shifflett Farmer. In addition to working as a mail clerk at UVA,
Mary loved spending time with her friends and family. She could always be found
laughing, helping others, and rooting for all Virginia Tech teams. Mary is
survived by her son James Robert and his wife Christi of Flemington, N.J.; two
beloved grandchildren, Kendall and Quinn; three sisters Cindy Gorman, Gail
Eatmon, and Carol Farmer; her nieces Michelle, Brianna, Hannah, and Madelyn; her
nephew Austin; her cousin Debbie Carter and her family, Ally, Keegan, and
Matthew, as well as other nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends. In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Robin Edwards
and her brother Jeff Farmer. A memorial service will be conducted on Thursday,
April 9, 2015, at 11:00 A.M. at Teague Funeral Home, with inurnment to follow at
Hillsboro Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the

WAYNESBORO - Calvin Richard Humphries, 64, of 900 Dogwood Circle, died at 1:45
A.M. Saturday, May 21, 2005, at the Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville. He
was born March 1, 1941 in Harrisonburg, the son of the late Elmer Richard
Humphries and Eilar Via Humphries who survives. He was an U.S. Army Veteran, a
member of Wayne Hills United Methodist Church, retired as a Design Draftsman
from General Electric. He enjoyed farming and NASCAR racing as his hobbies. In
addition to his mother of Grottoes, he is survived by his wife, Alma Redifer
Humphries, a son, Todd Richard Humphries and his wife, Angela of Grottoes, a
sister, Doris Knight Fultz of Grottoes and two granddaughters, Emily Rachel
Humphries and Ashley Renee Humphries. A funeral service will be conducted 11:00
A.M. Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at Parnassas United Methodist Church with the Rev.
Debra Copeland officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The

DEATH OF JOHN HUSSEY
John C. Hussey passed to the great beyond Tuesday, Nov. 19, 1912 at the home of
his son Hallie, after an illness lasting many months. Although death has been
expected it came as a great shock to relatives and friends. Death came as a
result of the hardening of the arteries, general debility and old age.
Deceased's health had been on the decline for the past two years or more, he
having spent last winter in the milder climate of Oklahoma in the hope of
recuperating. When he returned home last spring he said he felt better, but when
the excitement incident to travel was over, it was evident that the benefit was
only temporary and in spite of all that loving hearts and hands could do, he
failed rapidly from that time until the end. John C. Hussey was born near
Ashburton, North Carolina, April 26, 1841, died at Des Lacs, Nov. 19, 1912,
being 71 years, 6 months and 23 days old. He emigrated to Indiana when but a
young man and on September 18, 1862 enlisted in Company G. 99th Regiment of
Indiana Volunteers and went to the front. At the age of 21 he was promoted to
the rank of Corporal, later to that of 2nd Lieutenant which rank he held when
mustered out. After the war was over he emigrated to Missouri and was there
united in marriage to Susan F. Ballard. To this union five children were born,
namely: Mrs. D. C. Powers, Muskogee, Okla., Mrs. T. E. Fox, Bantry, N. D., J. W.
Hussey, H. H. Hussey and Mrs. Ed. Kincaid of Des Lacs. Brother Hussey was
converted at the age of 16 and lived a conscientious Christian life until his
death. He was a faithful friend, a loving father and a kind and gentle husband.
The funeral service was conducted from the Evangelical church at 12 o'clock Nov.
21, the Rev J. P. Driver, officiating by request of deceased.

Mrs. Susan F. Hussey, widow of the late John C. Hussey, died in Minot on Friday
morning, August 15, 1913, of heart failure. Mrs. Hussey was under treatment by a
Chiropractor at the time and was stopping at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Will
Zimmermon, none of her family being present. Mrs. Hussey had not been in very
good health since the trying ordeal thru which she passed during the sickness
and death of her husband last November, having had recurrent attacks of heart
trouble during the past six months, but of late had been feeling much better and
the first intimation Mr. and Mrs. Zimmermon had of anything wrong was when Mrs.
Hussey called to them at 6 o'clock that morning when they immediately summoned
medical aid but failing in that they applied the remedies at hand but to no
avail, and at 6:30 A.M. Mrs. Hussey passed away. The funeral was held at the
Evangelical church Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Driver officiating. Interment at
Des Lacs cemetery. Susan Frances Ballard was born at Elkton, Todd county,
Kentucky, March 24, 1846, died at Minot, N.D., August 15, 1913, aged 67 years, 4
months and 22 days. She moved with her parents to Missouri when 14 years of age.
She was married to J.C. Hussey August 9, 1866, to this union were born two sons
and three daughters; J.W. and H.H. Hussey and Mrs. Ed Kincaid of Des Lacs, Mrs.
Tom Fox of Bantry, N.D. and Mrs. D.C. Powers of Muckogee, Okla. Mrs. Hussey
emmigrated with her husband to Des Lacs about 12 years ago. At an early age Mrs.
Hussey became a Christian and united with the Baptist Church, living a
consecrated life until death called her home.

Hustead, Age 87, of Route 13 Simpson, WV, went home to be with her Lord, Sunday,
August 7, 2011. She was born March 9, 1924 to the late Bryce and Maude S.
"Mammy" Walton in Boonesville, VA. Geneva is survived by one brother, Forrest
Walton and wife Joyce and their son Timmy. Also surviving are, granddaughter,
Stevie Moore; grandsons, Michael Renneman and Jason Depolo; and her extended
family, former daughter-in-law Karry Jenkins and husband Thomas; several nieces
and nephews, including Jim Radabaugh, who helped with her care in her final
hours of need. Preceding Geneva in death, was her husband Martin Hustead; her
only child, Stephen Moore; her first husband, Leo Moore; sisters, Carletta
Sullivan, and Hazel Graham; and brothers, Pete, Mike, Wade, and Bryce Walton Jr.
Geneva was a treasured member of the Simpson Community. She was Postmaster in
Simpson for 31 years, where many people would stop in just to talk. She made
friends wherever she went and she visited and helped people throughout her
community and beyond. Anyone who came to Geneva for help would leave with
whatever they needed and more. She volunteered her time, and her services,
freely with a big smile and a laugh that was contagious. She was a member of the
Union Baptist Church of Simpson, but also loved visiting all the churches in the
area, including Long Run Baptist, Rosemont and Simpson United Methodist, and the
Grafton Wesleyan Holiness Churches. She was also anassociate member of the
Taylor County Association of Retired School Educators. Geneva lived as a true
example of the Christian life; she gave her all and treated everyone as she
would like to be treated. She was so loved by her many friends and will be
greatly missed by them all. The family will receive friends at the Union Baptist
Church in Simpson, WV on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 from 2 to 8 p.m. Funeral
Services will be conducted on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at the church at 11:00
a.m., with Pastor Lois Sandy and Sammy Myers officiating. Mrs. Hustead will lie
in state at the church on Thursday beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow
in the Simpson Cemetery. The Bradley J. Mayle Funeral Home in Flemington is
honored to handle final arrangements for Mrs. Hustead.

Dorothy Ann Hutchinson went to be with the Lord on June 27, 2018. She was
the owner and operator of the Crozet Snack Corner for 37 years. She is
preceded in death by her husband, Ollie G. Hutchinson; her parents, Walter
H. and Dorothy B. Sipe; three brothers, Eddie L. Sipe, Larry Sipe, and
Walter H. Sipe, Jr.; two sisters, Virginia G. Carver and Mary F. Wood; and
one special daughter, Connie S. Dudley. She is survived by four sisters,
Nancy Sipe and Joyce Rosson of Waynesboro, Margaret Reynolds of Clifton
Forge, and Carolyn Garrison of Charlottesville; four sons, Donnie Sipe of
Waynesboro, Ricky Sipe, Kevin Shifflett and Melvin Shifflett all of

Mrs. Celeste Evelyn Roberson Hyde, age 70, of Rome formerly
of Celanese passed away Sunday September 16, 2012 in a Rome health care.
Mrs. Hyde was born February 23, 1942, in Floyd County a daughter of the late
Claude Raymond Roberson, and Gertie RV Shelley Roberson. She was a member of
Mizpah United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, she was a assistant
Sunday Teacher, held numerous offices of Mizpah United Methodist Church
Women and also in the church. Mrs. Hyde was retired from Floyd Medical
Center as an LPN after 30 years of service. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Charles F. "Bunk" Hyde, sister, Ruby Boone. Survivors include,
sons, Keith Hyde and his wife Amy, Rome; Chuck Hyde, and his Fiancé, Dawn
Ruff, Rome; sisters, Cora Mae Roberson Fleming, and her husband, Glenn,
Woodstock; Doris Roberson Russell, Kennesaw; grandchildren, Hailey Hyde,

Charles Franklin Hyde Sr., 53, of 41
Elmwood St. died Saturday morning at his residence after a long illness. Mr.
Hyde was born Aug. 3, 1938, in Floyd County, son of Herman Marion Hyde and
Eva Shiflett Hyde. He had been a lifelong resident of Floyd County, was
employed by The Fairbanks Co. as a supervisor for 31 years. He had been a
long time coach in the Youth Activities baseball program, having coached the
Elk's Lodge team for 22 years. He was a member of the New Armuchee Baptist
Church and was a veteran of the Army. Survivors include: his wife Celeste
Roberson Hyde, to whom he was married, Dec. 30, 1961; two sons, Charles F.
Hyde Jr., Rome and Marion Keith Hyde; a grandchild; his parents, Rome;
nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at New
Armuchee Baptist Church with the Rev. Willard MacAllaster and the Rev. James
Baird officiating. Interment will be at East View Cemetery.

Mrs.
Eva Mae Shiflett Hyde, age 75, of 333 Turner McCall Blvd. Rome died Sunday
evening at Columbus Redmond Regional Medical Center following a lengthy
illness. A native of Rome and Floyd County, Mrs. Hyde was born March 14,
1921, a daughter of the late Charles and Naomi Patterson Shiflett. She was a
member of the Calhoun Avenue Baptist Church and a retired homemaker. Mrs.
Hyde was preceded in death by her son, Charles F. Hyde on June 20, 1992 and
by her brothers, Joe, George, Bill and Bob Shiflett and her sisters Bell
Dukes, Stella Broadway and Mary Loyd. Mrs. Shiflett is survived by her
husband of over 60 years Herman M. Hyde to whom she was married on June 5,
1936, a devoted daughter-in-law Celeste Hyde of Rome, 2 grandsons Chuck and
Keith Hyde both of Rome, Keith's wife Amy and 2 great-granddaughters, all of
Rome, a brother Jack Shiflett of Rome and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday in the Calhoun Avenue Baptist
Church with Rev. Linus McWhorter and Rev. James Studdard officiating.
Interment will be in the family plot in East View Cemetery. Mrs Hyde will
lie in state at the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home where the
family will receive friends this (Tuesday) evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. At
other hours the family may be contacted at 41 Elwood Street in the Riverside
Community. Pallbearers are asked to meet at the church on Wednesday morning
at 10:40 AM and they include Benny, Tommy, Bill and Tim Shiflett and Robert

SPEEDWELL, Tenn. — Rufus William Irvin, 56 of Speedwell, TN departed this life
on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at his home. Rufus Was born in Middlesboro, KY on
September 2, 1962, and was a son of the late Moss Sewell and Genevia Paul Irvin.
Rufus was of the Baptist faith and couldn't wait to be in the presence of the
Lord. Rufus was a farm manager for Haymaker Farms for 43 years and loved nothing
more than being on the farm. The entire Robertson family were not only his
employers, but he referred to them as his family. In addition to his parents, he
was preceded in death by his grandparents, Hobert and Bessie Irvin and Lonnie
and Melda Paul. Rufus is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Sandra Irvin.
Together they had five children, Rufus Irvin II, Kelsey Irvin, Lee Hardin,
Amanda Bradley and husband, Derek and Hannah Hensley and husband, Kevin;
grandchildren, Adrian Irvin, Trey Irvin, Ivan Rouse, Brooke Irvin, Gracie Hardin
and Adyson Bradley; ten brothers and sisters that loved him dearly, Wanda Sue
Irvin, Dolly (Fred) Massengill, William " Bill"(Norma) Irvin, Carl Irvin, Patsy
(Carlos) Bennett, Marvin (Doris) Irvin, Paul (Linda) Irvin, Walter (Gina) Irvin,
Frank Irvin, Fay (J.R.) Laws, and a friend he considered a brother, Arthur
Mitchell; as well as a host of nieces and nephews who dearly loved their Uncle
Rufus. Anyone that knew Rufus, Knew that his family was his world. Funeral

1983 in Tromball, He was born January 23, 1897 in Houston, County. Mr. Ivins

the Eastern Star, Weldon. He was retired from the Texas Department of
Corrections. Survivors include his widow, Hazel Ivins of Weldon; sons and
